Yeah that dude was not wielding it properly against the pig carcass. The old dude did it right for the tests he did. In fact he probably did the second test cause the first test was so botched by the Asian dude. Even a half decent blade in the right hands can do way more than that wanna be swordsman who did the first test

I think the first one was on him but if you watch, on the occasions of failures, you'll see many blades that don't cut appear to land flat. But if you watch them carefully, they often contact with the edge and glance to flat before failing. It's really difficult to say any of these were on Doug but it's within the realm of possibility and to me this is the one that looks the most like Doug's fault on the first claymore. The second one clearly had a bad spot but landed true, that's why it shattered. The one that bent though clearly had to have heat treat issue since a proper treated blade shouldn't bend like that even if it lands flat, that thing seems too flexible even if it landed correctly.
the affirmation is simply wrong ("there is nothing bigger than a claymore " that the guy said), but some claymore were heavyer than some Zweihänder , while always shorter , we have to define what "big" we want to considerate , the mass or the area? :P
@@unknow11712 Even if you want to go for weight, some doesn't equal all. Generally the weight of a claymore is going to equal that of a greatsword or it will be lighter. The exception being when you compare specific examples of claymore that are unusually heavy to some examples of greatsword that are unusually light. That being said, most sword categories are a modern thing. The differentiation between Zweihander and Claymore in period would be whether the cutler you bought it from was speaking a German or Celtic dialect at the time.
These two weapons were both flawed, but in opposite ways. The first was too soft, the second too hard. It's difgicult to say, but I wouldn't be surprised if neither was made from proper spring steel. These two propably assumed they could use the same material they use for knives, but that doesn't pan out. Swords need a degree of Give. Too stiff and you end up with a broken blade.
Personally I think you can see the problem in the video: The length of the forges they're heat treating in. Unless you've mastered the technique, moving back and forth through a forge will give you a very inconsistent heat treatment. Besides that I think sword one was overtreated and sword two was undertreated. Wasn't a fair task to assign to a home forge.

Great swords in general are very hard to make (without the steal problem) because if the blade is to heavy it will ether snap from the weight of the blade on the thinner tang or be to heavy to use but if it’s too thin it will bend and snap
You can see it when David swings that he's indexing on the hilt with his knuckle.. Doug's up on the hilt, but he's not indexing right and at 5:26 and 6:25 that blade hits at a 45 degree angle.
Poor use or not, both blades weren't structurally sound. In battle, every blow wouldn't be perfectly aligned, so I think it being poorly swung could even contribute to a more authentic test lol
@@alanbiggle544 the problem with that is when it's a test of the blades cutting and killing ability and he does a good swing with one, and botches the other, he doesn't redo the botched one, even though it was him and not the blade.

Actually it’s in between and the paint and the sword, most England blades (outside of like the rapier) aren’t that flexible, but of course there are plenty of sabers used by the Mongolians that are extremely flexible. Some blades are better hard while others are better soft. It depends heavily what type of blade which end of the spectrum you want

It s way harder to do claymores and long swords in general because of their lenght.The bigger the sword is the easier it will break if not done correcty
The bigger it is, the more force behind it, and the greater the chance of damage in the weak spots. You also have to make it thinner for it to be usable, otherwise it might be too heavy to swing
Can't have these guys make something that's bigger than their Forge because they can't heat treat it correctly they do this all the time with the contestants it's not really fair less you give them the correct equipment to build.
BendMore and BreakMore, both is not Claymore, so it wise to expel both of their weapon. the judge need to reconsider the result where both blade is not a complete intact.

Swords were hit on the sides in battle for centuries. Good swords stay true and bad swords bend or break, it's that simple. You can't tell an enemy that is trying to kill you "Hey, wait for me to straighten my sword and we will continue fighting".
tbf fir the blade as big as claymore they should give the competitor more time to work. But again Dave could actually do that weapon flawlessly in only four days... So don't know about that.
yeah you could kinda tell stuff was gonna go wrong watching the heat treat. ik the lighting was different but the bent sword's blade looked a very dim red, definitely not hot enough. the shattered sword's blade looked way too bright, so it ended up too brittle
I thought a claymore should be thicker because the swords these guys made seems to be thinner when that guy can even fix his bent sword with his legs lol
I don't understand why blacksmiths enter this competition without serious equipment at home to handle big blades. The final challenge is almost always a sword and these smith's puny little knife forges are grossly inadequate for heat treating large blades.
Watch the first claymore up against the pig and you'll see that the "weapons master" hit the carcass with the flat of the blade. It is no surprise that it didn't cut when the edge was never applied to the contest. "I flatted your sword and it bent, but that is Your fault!"
Basically, the criteria of this show is as follows: 0. if one does not satisfy mission parameters immediately go home 1. if the sword breaks (catastrophic failure) earlier catastrophic failure loses 2. if both survives more damaged one/one which "will not keal/cut" loses 3. if similar performance heavier one loses 4. otherwise details (handle,...) are considered interesting to see both fails at the same time.
I'd rather be holding that broken blade in battle after delivering a mortal blow than that bent one after delivering nothing. Unfair too, the broken blade still had a good 30 inches on her, she was perfectly fine for the next test and didn't need to be bent back for it. Safety prevented them???? Come on!!!!!

Swords made from good spring steel are very flexible. If one is well made, you can bend it almost backwards without breaking or damaging it.
