That Damascus khopesh from Salem looked absolutely wicked , can't help but respect all the effort he put into it.
Not only that. I love the fact that his doesn't have the steep curve or a regular Kopesh. Unique design.

I agree. That ripple was super nice. Its really neat seeing all the patterns you can put in a blade just from stacking or twisting.
The other guy should’ve won because he stayed with the design of the Blade and. Salems blade look more towards a sword then the actual piece

The khopesh is a seriously underappreciated sword design.
No kidding. I had no idea that it could be used for disarming shields. The short clip of the Egyptian warrior weilding two swords was impressive. I'm surprised nobody had anything similar in history. Slash and hack.
The sickle sword is one of my favorites.
Facts. Some people want a gladius, some people want a scottish longsword, I want a khopesh

The khopesh is one of those weapons that is easily dismissed when you first see pictures of it since it just looks like a farm tool. But it's only when you see it practiced with that you can really appreciate it; the hook allows for entangling, it's offset blade allows for deep hard cuts and the tip being in line with the hilt meant it was entirely viable as a thrusting weapon. Truly versatile.
"It was grown in an orchard by a small samurai" is a very funny sentence in so many ways.

Idk why you are complaining about the steel. Egyptian weapons would’ve been bronze at best, though many were just simple iron. To be fair, only some of these weapons on this show would be steel. Many would be bronze or even iron. If we really want to get technical, almost zero of the weapons that have a wooden hilt use a tree from that weapons’ country of origin. Stop being a troll and enjoy the show

Salem made the most beautiful blade i have ever seen. It looked ancient and futuristic at the same time. Super aggressive shape, stunning pattern, and those fullers really set it off. Great work my man.
That damascus one has to be in a top sword list, absolute gorgeous and without a doubt one of the most beautiful piece on the show so far, truly.

Too bad it ain't period-correct though, & it could have used a tad bit more curvature. Craig's blade would've won instead simply because his was more accurate... too bad his blade didn't stay as a blade after the strength test though...
@@FalconWindblader I've seen some of the real ancient khopeshs that were found with Tutankhamun and I can say that Salem's design in terms of shape is pretty accurate.

Also, I think Salem made a very smart decision lengthening his handle like he did. I've seen Khopeshes before, and a lot of them are about as big as a Roman Gladius, which is not a particularly long sword. This clip doesn't show it, but Salem spends Day 1 looking at images of historical Khopeshes from various tombs: "(shows one picture) This is a Khopesh from the tomb of King Ramses II. (moves to another picture) This is a Khopesh from King Tutankhamen's tomb." The judges asked for a blade that was between 28-32 inches, but as Salem pointed out when examining the images of the various Khopeshes, "A lot of these, historically, were 25 inches or less." So with the judges asking for a blade as long as they did, I'd imaging not lengthening the handle would have made the whole sword very front-heavy.
Kevin Norwood : Total agreement. Sometimes a good sword is more than just the blade quality.
Because historical khopeshes were made of bronze which doesn't lend itself to a long blade. And the reason it's compared so much to a battle axe is because the blade wasn't particularly sword-like either, it was thick.
@@mrkiky Yeah give one of these to an Egyptian soldier circa 2000 BC and he'd probably ask you what it was. He'd recognize it as a weapon, but I'm not sure he'd think it was a Khopesh.

Saleem's confidence about his weapon is admirable, He looked more expirienced and put some real tough hardwork on his blade. That made him a champion. Respect earned.
Only issue I have is the original Egyptian Khopesh was cast in bronze, would have been cool to see someone make a second one in bronze just to earn bonus points with the judges.
Casting is a very different skill than bladesmithing
@@TheWhoamaters Well, yes. But if you want a period correct piece. :D Also casting Steel vs casting Bronze that comes out VERY differently. You really need a different approach to metal working, which... yeah, these guys would probably have to relearn metal working.

Yes axes came long before the Khopesh. The Egyptians made the Khopesh in response to the axe, combining the the curve the axe blade with the length of a sword.

I would love to see the blade they show as a reference at the beginning to perform. Would be interesting to see how it competes with the contestant's blades and whether the tests are doable.
Baker makes those blades, he’s done a few beat the judges challenges and him and jay are prolly the best sword makers on the show, I figure they’d hold up real well.

There's so much technical ability put into these weapons, and the heat treatment is very specific to fully hardening the weapon and keeping it that way.

Not to mention their blades were made of bronze, which is made from tin, which, as I've seen, is a relatively soft metal. How did these blades not break against other blades and shields?

Sometimes I just watch specific Forged in Fire episodes over again just to admire the beautiful craftsmanship & detail the blade smiths out in there work. Despite the historical accuracy of the weapons & tests that are made & performed on this show. And Salem’s Khopesh was STUNNING!
