      I was present at a sleep course once that is based on cognitive behavioural therapy and they recommend to only use your bed for sleeping and sex otherwise your brain doesn't put together the bed and sleep cos you do other things there such as watch TV, work etc.

      You should try the Wim Hof Method, it helps with better sleep, stress and also boosts your immunsystem, because you said that you are ill at the again (but you actually have to wait till you are healthy to start)
      It is definitely hard, because it requires cold showers, but believe me IT IS WORTH IT!

    Taz, please please please don't rely on Nytol! I've had problems sleeping for as long as I can remember, but after my mum died 5 years ago it was especially bad. My doctor recommend it to me as a 'temporary fix', and 5 years later I'm still taking it. As it's only meant to be taken for short periods of time, I have no idea what effects this could have on me long-term. I literally cannot sleep without it now - if I run out I am awake the entire night and it is miserable. Obviously this is just my experience but I feel like I have to warn you about it.

      @@ballsack1039 wow I'm sorry to hear you guys have had such terrible experiences with Nytol... I do take the strong one (in a purple box) occasionally when I need it but never have I become addicted to it. I take maybe a few tables a year.

      @@jakeldn7105 I think they're dependent rather than addicted. Nytol doesn't have anything in it to become addicted to. I wouldn't mind betting that a Nytol placebo would work just as well.

      You just need to detox for a while so to allow your hormones to regulate. It'll be painful but it's better in the long run.

      true ! cuz when you're body gets used to it after a while the dose won't be enough and you'll be seeing yourself taking more and more and it will be much harder to detoxify

    Idk. Ever since I was a little girl, I fall asleep by telling myself a story. I'm not sure why, but even as an adult, a bedtime story to myself is what works.

    When my husband and I got married and we started living a “normal” life. We ate regular home cooked nutritious meals. We went to bed at 8:00 every night to watch tv. We were both astonished at how much nutrition, sleep and low stress made us feel better!

    Try low lighting as soon as the sun sets. No white lights whatsoever at night.
    Candles work good & reading a book by candlelight before bed. Incense, lavender, essential oils.
    Just don't burn your house down.
    Morning sunshine helps configure your circadian rhythm also, so you start to feel more relaxed at sundown.
    As well as eating at the same times and not eating too late

    Taz if you do read this, I was diagnosed with ADHD in 5th grade and sleep was never easy. They said it was because my brain was constantly on the go. As an adult now I find music and a sleep meditation video help, along with keeping the bedroom dark and cool. Also they hype about weighted blankets is also worth it. Not sure if this is helpful, but hopefully it is.

      I wonder if Taz has ADHD. It's probably undiagnosed in Britain and generally undiagnosed in females, her symptoms seem to suggest that is a possibility. It doesn't help that there's something like a three year waiting list in some areas just to be tested
      Writing this wide awake at 6 am and before she mentioned ADHD so good to see I wasn't barking up the wrong tree.
      Another thing: people with ADHD apparently click with each other and taz is the sort of person Is click with so maybe that's another sign

    One of the reasons I feel you aren't able to sleep early is that you work from your bed a lot.
    Our brain connects different environments/places with different things. Like for most people bed is a place to sleep and a study table/work table is a place to work, but for your brain, I feel it's a bit messed up. Your brain relates bed with work only. So even when your body wants to calm down, your brain isn't able to. It keeps on thinking all about work because for it bed means working. This results in you not being able to sleep on time.
    This is something which my psychological told me as I was also facing the same issue.
    Only changing my lifestyle a bit and having a separate place to work worked miraculously for me.
    You can also try it!!
    Do lemme know in the comments if you try and have a separate working place that helps u in improving your sleeping pattern or not.
    You will for sure have to try it for a minimum of 2 weeks to see the change.
    I started noticing differences in the first week itself.

      yes 100% ! I found the same- I used to watch tv and play video games in bed in the afternoons and evenings and would struggle to sleep afterwards. Once I made the change of relaxing in the evening in the living room rather than my bedroom I found it much easier to sleep

      This is absolutely true. I had very serious insomnia from about 14-23 and was at one point told by my therapist that it could be due to having poor “sleep hygiene”, so we tried sleep conditioning which was incredibly brutal but once I stuck to it, super effective. Basically it’s reconditioning your brains attitude to sleep.
      Essentially the rules were that I was only allowed on or in my bed when I was going to sleep. I had to have a set bedtime and wake up time that needed to be stuck to. Even if I fell asleep at 5am I still had to get up at 8am.
      The hardest part was the bedtime part, you get into bed and then if you aren’t asleep within about 30 mins you have to get out of bed and sit doing nothing stimulating (just reading really) until you feel tired and then try again. You do this non-stop until you fall asleep.
      I’m 28 now, and I do genuinely think my “insomnia” was just poor sleep hygiene. I stop looking at my phone at 9pm, wash at 9:30 and I’m in bed by 10pm and fall asleep within 10 mins, undisturbed until 6am.
      If I have friends around, they know to leave by like 8:30/9 because the second it hits 9:30 I start yawning and zoning out. My body is so conditioned that if I sit on my bed during the day within 20 mins I’m yawning.
      It was very difficult to do, because it’s all about discipline and at the start I was crying constantly because it felt like torture. But holy shit, my sleep is amazing.

      I heard this so many times, but for me it just does not work. I never work in bed or do much of anything there besides sleeping, but I still struggle to fall asleep instantly. When I am on the sofa, where I often work and do other things, I could (and often do) fall asleep in an instant. It is so weird.

    How about trying to add a workout in? The days I workout, I get really tired at night and fall asleep pretty quickly. I would suggest not to continue the sleeping pills because after a while 2 tablets won't be enough. I would suggest get a doctor's appointment. And get it sorted out because sleep can solve more than half your problems. Best of Luck TAZ!

    Nytol was a life saver when my anxiety was really bad. I’m very fortunate that I do have a healthy sleep pattern now. It makes such a difference especially for your mental health☺️

    I was diagnosed with ADHD at 31yo this year, and I just yesterday took my first med for it, and the difference is absolutely staggering. I can't believe how much easier life is for neurotypical people. My brain is silent for the first time in my life. What you're describing sounds very much like ADHD and I'm glad you had a screening. Pursue that diagnosis, don't wait!

      Try and have a break from taking meds for 1 day roughly every 2 weeks, I’ve seen a lot of people saying that this helps the drug be most efficient, as the effects can die down after a while for some reason. You’re best looking into it as I’m not sure on the exact details

    I have a morning routine. I never thought about needing a bedtime routine 😂 it might hopefully make me more productive at work, which would be great because I have a lot of work this month. I'm a freelance book editor and I love my job

    I have ALWAYS had problems with falling asleep (and still have), mostly because of my adhd and anxiety. But one thing that really helps me is listening to (boring) stories while l’m going to bed. I especially love the podcast “Get Sleepy”!

    Your sleep problems and how it relates to neurodivergent is exactly how I feel. I *have* to have something to occupy my mind, be it a book, video, or podcast. I will literally fall asleep with my headphones in and take them out when my eyes are constantly drooping. If I just lay in bed *trying* to sleep, my mind would be full of random thoughts. Sleeping tablets like Nytol do work for me, and I experience the whole night sleep without waking as you did, but they give me a terrible hangover and leave me feeling drowsy the next day so often I get less done than if I'd gone to bed late. I'd love to try going to bed at 7/8 PM, but with a kid and hubby, I just don't think that would be possible. :(

      I relate so much! Aside from other things *cough TH-cam cough* keeping me awake I do struggle with getting my mind to switch off. Like, I can be really tired, my eyes are dropping and as I settle down to sleep my mind wakes up. I should probably try sorting myself out a bit. Listening to music will probably help me.

    I just discovered you! And I’m so glad that you mentioned the connection between ADHD and sleep deficiency, because in the beginning, I was listening to you speak generally/about your relationship with sleep, and I instantly thought of a podcast I recently listened to about the correlation between ADHD and delayed sleep phase syndrome. I haven’t been formally diagnosed yet either (but I know I have it), but HEAVILY relatable across the board. Thank you for sharing!

    Hi taz,
    I'm halfway through the video and it seems like you might continue to use Nytol every night but this will put a lot of pressure on your liver since sedatives, analgesics and the like are almost exclusively metabolised by the liver and will harm it overtime.

      @@Truecrimeresearcher224 yes, and zzquil, nytol, etc are Benadryl aka diphenhydramine, which in the long term isn't recommended as a sleep regiment. It does work really well though.
      I've accidentally (1 wasn't working) taken 2 at work before knowing how bad it would be to take 2, because of an allergic reaction. Apparently I got so zoned out that when I went to the bathroom I was gone for half an hour.

    I relate to a lot of the things you talked about in this video and I’ve been doing mindfulness meditation daily for a month and it was hard at first but it’s helped a lot! If you haven’t tried it I would highly recommend but make sure you use a guided meditation series which actually teaches you a bit about meditation and it’s purpose rather than just “breathe in breathe out” etc

    I've always slept with an alarm clock in my bedroom since a kid and my sleep has been pretty good. One day it broke so I used my phone as an alarm and OMG did I notice it made such a difference. I realised that not only by going on my phone for a bit changed my sleep but literally being in the presence of a phone had such a drastic effect. I would consider using an alarm clock and keeping your phone outside ya bedroom! Xx

    My advice for the BEST SLEEP of your life! 1) Drink lavender tea at night before bed. Get dried lavender, brew it for 10 minutes in hot water. In about a week, you will not have broken sleep. 2) Have a noise machine on for the first 30 minutes when you go to bed. After a while your brain will associate this noise machine with sleep time. You will fall asleep faster. 3) No blue light from any screens before bed! Blue light from your phone, laptop or any screen can mess with your circadian rhythm. I sleep well every night, and I wake up rested.

      half of these sound like a routine tho. like with young kids. Any routine you give them, they get used to while (them especiall) don't need it. for example; 'my kids need to be driven around or they won't sleep'

      I have a blue light filter on my phone and tablet that goes on at 10pm at night. I used to forget about blue light and would be like till 2-3 am. Then go to bed and wake up like noon.

    The same thing happens to me, I have thoughts and ideas in my head all the time. But I've never had a hard time falling asleep (except if I'm anxious about something) what I do is leave my phone away, close my eyes and imagine things that have nothing to do with my life, and I really fall asleep in a few minutes. I've also heard a lot that looking at the screen of the mobile phone, pc, etc, before going to sleep can really mess up your sleep, leave it at least 15 minutes before going to sleep

      I do the same, I think about made up stories and fall asleep quickly, that is what actually helps I think, having the routine to think about not real stuff, cause if not, I still have to think a lot and thinking about real stuff of my life will keep me awake, anxious, not able to fall asleep.... It similar princip to counting sheep 😁

    Totally relate. I am neurodivergent and have trouble falling asleep. Podcasts or stories help me a lot. I never get the eyes falling thing unless I’m exhausted during the day, at night I usually force myself to sleep with a tea & listening to something quiet.

    Taz, remember the time change this way: Spring forward (when u jump u go forward, so time moves forward an hour) & Fall back (when u fall, you fall backwards, so time goes BACK). Its worked for me since I've used this.

    Everytime you talk about sleep in a video I gotta click instantly because it's just so relatable! sleep is literally my biggest enemy, I either can't fall asleep or can't get up... My thoughts are constantly running as well, so I gotta watch some sort of yt videos (painting videos are helping a lot) to force my brain to shut off eventually. The ONLY thing that's been helping me fall asleep within a reasonable timespan is the "falling back to sleep" sequence on headspace (meditation app). It's only 10 mins long but it magically puts me to sleep if I'm tired! So now the only issue left is getting tired huhu

    The one thing the pandemic gave me was the ability to exist without feeling pressure to be productive or better. I loved every bit of that. Now, I still sometimes feel that, but not always 🙈

      The very first weeks of pandemic were the most CALM period for me, EVER! It might sound crazy, but it’s true - the pressure of CONSTANTLY demanding world and uncatchable time was gone.
      I was at ease with just existing, doing things at my own pace and doing what I like and not feeling guilty 🙏
      That said, these feelings are way GONE now 😢 Anybody an advice how to get it back without bringing another pandemic to the world? 😅

      @@xmartinl Quarantine was good at first. Stay home and being able to relax was great. I go to bed now at midnight and wake up like 9:30. Which before I would stay up till 2-3 maybe 4-5 am then sleep and wake up at like 2 pm

    I feel so lucky for always having had a pretty regular sleeping pattern. It's getting more unstable every year, but compared to others I'm still thriving man. I still can't get up early whatsoever, but I also usually fall asleep right away so yay me

    My hubby does mornings so has done plenty of “good sleep” research and always tells me cus I watch yT n am on my phone before sleep in my bed my body doesn’t relate my bed as a resting/sleeping place. But I find it hard to fall asleep naturally cus my brain goes ten to the dozen and my thoughts go into overdrive!

    Being on a schedule is the best thing that helped my sleep. That and listening to classical music before falling asleep. The sleep timer on phones is a life-saver haha. Good luck on your sleep journey 😴

    omg what you were saying about the ADHD part is so relatable for me! I always feel like i have to force myself to sleep, and sometimes the feeling overwhelms me when i’m almost asleep bc i’m so aware that i’m TRYING to sleep, idk if that makes sense 😭

    I thought it was so cute how your accent got stronger when you were holding the Mike mug and chatting. I have chronic pain so that equals chronic pain insomnia. I'm very glad cannabis is legal in my country because honestly, edibles are the only thing that helps me sleep.

    I do a combination of things that seem to work for me (I don't know how helpful each is in isolation):
    - Go to bed the same time each night (+/- 30 mins)
    - Avoid caffeine after 2 pm
    - Avoid taking in more fluids after 2 hours before bed
    - Get up roughly the same time each morning
    - Do something that tires my brain during the day
    - Do something that tires my body during the day
    - Read for 30 mins before trying to sleep
    - Listen to a sleep podcast called "Sleep With Me" (highly reccomend)
    - Try not to sit/ lie in bed for anything other than sleep, so my brain associates it with sleep
    - Write out anything I need to do the next day, so I don't have to think about it

      Caffeine doesn't affect me anymore. But I usually go to bed around 11:45-12 am everyday. I get up around 9-9:30 everyday

    I really just wanna make sure you’re safe don’t be overdosing on sleeping pills because I have lost one of family members because of that and I don’t know what the internets gonna be like without the iconic click for Taz❤️👍

      And if you rely on pills to make you sleep your body won’t produce melatonin the hormone that makes u fall asleep naturally it’ll always relay on the pills!

    I work as a psychologist, so here are some sleeping tips:
    - Go to bed at a reasonable hour, 7 is very early! I'd advise between 10 and 12.
    - Too much sleep is also a thing, its best to sleep between 6 and 10 hours.
    - Dont use any screens an hour before going to sleep, instead do a relaxing activity like reading or listening to a podcast.
    - If tou lie awake for an hour of more, get up and do a relaxing activity, then try again
    - Dont eat or exercize two hours before going to sleep.
    - If you want to change your sleeping pattern and you usually go to bed really late, stay up an entire night before you start your new sleeping scedule.
    - Keep a scedule, go to bed at the same time and get up at the same time.
    - DON"T use sleeping pills, you'll become reliant and sleeping without will become even more difficult. The effects of sleeping pills also lessen with time, so you'll have tot use more and more.

    Taz I completely feel you. I’ve always had issues sleeping. It’s gotten to the point that it’s completely opposite from when others are awake. And that when I go across the world I have a normal sleep schedule for a bit. Having work helps a bit but yeah... I feel your pain.

    Taz, you should read 'Why We Sleep' by Matthew Walker. Its a bestseller and it's fascinating. It really explains how important regular 7-9 hour sleep is for our health and cognitive function.

    I know exactly how you feel. I too have difficulty in falling asleep the night before my exam. Small exam, insignificant exam.. doesn't matter. The fear of not being able to sleep keeps me awake. It's painful. I too take pills then. It's been like this for last 6 years. But on times other than my exam, I fall asleep right away. I very much could relate with your falling asleep and forcing to sleep concept. I do hope you get better. No one deserves this pain. Love you Taz.

    The last time I didn't feel guilty about excising, was on October 28 (very specific, I know). That day I started kinda hopeless and gave myself a short speech that I had to get out of the the house to explore the city I just moved to (that day I was there for 1 week). So I walked around the city and when I saw something that I genuinely wanted, because I knew that that would make me happy for that moment/day/long term (drink/food related or clothing) then I bought it. I listened to myself that day and I ended it with a diner in a restaurant, by myself, that I wanted to try out. It felt amazing and I just wanted to love myself that day as much as I could and it genuinely felt like a reward. I wanted to show myself that I appreciated what I did the last couple of months (this hole year really). There has been ups and down, but I always kept going and just rewarding myself for that... that was the best decision. I needed it and when I came back home that night, it was such a good feeling.

    One thing u can follow is to exercise regularly ,doing cardio, walking 10k steps..if u are physically tired you will fall asleep very quickly..also don't take naps in afternoon sleep for 7 8 hrs straight at night

    I feel u taz. I'm sick this week as well. Feel better soon! And I relate to u on falling asleep. I put my phone down lay down close my eyes and hope for the best and if that doesn't work I tell myself a story in my head then I'll knock out. But if I hear a podcast, tv or radio, or an ebook I'll continue to be awake finishing whatever it is I'm listening too. It's weird. And I struggle with sleep as well. I'm either no sleeping enough or sleeping too much I can't get it right. But I also struggle with depression, anxiety, fibromyalgia and a whole host of other health issues. So ur not alone.

    I have ADHD & I just assumed you had been diagnosed with it as well because of how much I relate to your sleep issues, inability to focus for too long on one thing, and being all over the place in general. It can def impact your sleep. I have insomnia so bad that I am on medication but even with the medication I’ve found that if I deviate from my night time routine, I have difficulty sleeping. Big example is doing day time activities (such as work or leisurely watching TV) in bed. So, I limit my time in bed to things, aside from sleeping, that aren’t stimulating. For exp: my 30 min “waking up routine” and my 30 min “powering down to sleep routine” (which consists of watching one or two short TH-cam videos that don’t have dialogue or loud noises/music. Everything else I do outside of my room. I may nap on my couch (extremely rare occasions ) but that doesn’t effect my sleep routine. Maybe you can try some of the things I mentioned and hopefully they help.

    Here are a few tips, starting with the best one: stop doing extremes.
    Tl;dr: set boundries at night, focus on quality
    longer version:
    - Your memory and concentration issues are not from sleep issues, it's your ADHD. See what it does with you to understand how it affects your life. And create a proper routine (and I'm not taking about specific products just e.g. reading, cozyness, work boundaries etc). Night routine is not work related (this includes filming after a certain time), bed is not work (brain makes connections to places and their functions) or screen related (see blue light). Don't take sleeping meds all nilly willy. Talk to your doctor about it and read the information and prescription on what it could do to your body long term. Right now you're promoting a medical product quite a lot. IF you have severe sleep issues, consider asking about a sleeping test.
    - You're sick now due to the pandemic and it being flu season. You haven't been exposed to the amount you would have been in 2019, which is why the flue and even the common cold is kicking our butt even more (and why you should get the flue shot). To add on to that, you can't catch up on sleep. The sleep you've lost, is lost. Just focus on good quality of sleep. Regardless of if this is 6, 7 or 9 hours.

    Remember that there's a difference between lack of sleep and poor sleep quality! You can sleep for 9 hours without much quality, and have 6 hours of quality sleep.

    I was diagnosed with adhd when I was around 7 or 8 (I'm 31 now). I've ALWAYS struggled with sleep.. the only thing that helps me is putting star trek tng, because I've seen it so many times I can just listen to it and watch it in my head as I'm trying to go to sleep 😅
    Its quieter than having nothing on lol

    I actually do fall asleep by habit of "forcing myself to sleep". Took a load of practice but it happens quite fast nowadays.
    But I usually spend the last hour or so of my day listening to an audiobook in bed before I put it off and fall asleep basically. But it's not like I'm ever about to fall asleep while listening, I just put myself to sleep when I know it's about time for it 😂

    Ugh, I feel your sleep experience! I, too, need a relaxed something (plant videos for some time) that I find interesting but not too interesting. I'll watch a bit while laying in bed and when I start feeling more and more tired I'll turn down the volume until I can hear a bit of stuff but can't understand the actual words. Then I close my eyes and fight off bad thoughts until I just wake up the next morning.

    Nice video again!! I used to make up scenario's before being able to fall asleep but since that is a chore everytime I stopped. Now I just get in my comfortable sleeping position and fall asleep for the rest of the night. I must add, sleeping through the night does not equal feeling great and rested in the morning. I can still feel a bit tired sometimes but thats fine!

    i literally was in the same boat as you so i would suggest that u need to do activities during the day to tire you out. when i’m more active i naturally feel more tired at the end of the night ygmm. but totally relate to the constant thoughts before bed thing 100%
