Find it hilarious that you've never ridden him bareback before. When I was young , we couldn't afford a saddle, occasionally was able to borrow one to compete, so rode nothing but bareback for years. Both flat and jumping. Gives you a better connection with your horse and better balance. Even when I did get a saddle I still often preferred bareback.
When I was learning to ride many moons ago, it was required to ride bare back and bitless to work on keeping our heels down, our core tight, drive with our pelvis, and legs tight. The horses seemed to love it! I think they appreciated the close and unhindered contact with their rider.
Wow he seems perfectly at home with bareback! And you on him since you couldn't help but jump more than needed, I think this should be a fun low stakes staple in your riding repertoire! With his massive and really cool round jumps your seat will be all the better for it haha! Always fun to do something different, even better when it clicks

I think you should go in the bareback challenge with Max in two weeks, forget waiting another year. He’s ready. Max looks so much more mature this year. Tiny is showing so much more maturity, too. He is looking great. Does anybody know Tiny’s show name? He is definitely one to watch.

I used to run a stable and would take my pony (and any of the other horses in a pinch) out bareback, on trail rides when I couldn't ride him with a saddle. We would also take them swimming when it was really hot out. I loved catering bareback! Hated trotting of course! That was 25+ years ago, but I spent so much time riding back in the day that I remember it like it was yesterday! So fun! Now I have to Google this bareback challenge, whatever that is...! Stay safe!!
