      So sorry for the loss of Belle Star's baby, and prayers for peaches and her calf. Not sure why I received this today but brought to mind something that happened to me in my 20's, years ago here in Oklahoma, for some reason I just wanted to go out to the Arbuckle mountains by myself so I parked my car out in the field and walked up this hill to a place I'd never been before and when I came back I noticed my car was surrounded by bison which I'd never seen before being a city girl and never being near a farm, this was a real treat but they had my car surrounded and I waited and waited and they weren't moving, not knowing any better I was a little frightened but It was getting late and I needed to get to my car so I slowly crept up little by little and believe it or not they slowly started moving away and just made a pass for me to get to my car door. I slowly turned on the car and ever so slowly crept out of there, heart pounding but I remember the look in their eyes very peaceful very calming and I felt I had an experience I would never forget and I haven't some forty years later. Have loved bison ever since 🥰

    I’m kinda worried about Belle Star. She still had the afterbirth hanging after that long. Hopefully she’s ok and there isn’t anything wrong there, no infection or anything. Nice little place under the trees for baby Belle. You keep on ranchin I’ll keep on watching.🦬🦬🦬

    • @avisbrown7957
      @avisbrown7957 ปีที่แล้ว +30

      I was wondering the same thing. Dusty, how long do you leave the afterbirth hanging before some kind of intervention is needed?
      Thank you for the respect you gave that babe. The trees will be great protector's.

    • @CynthiaWebber-j9h
      @CynthiaWebber-j9h ปีที่แล้ว +16

      Yes - I know in cows you sometimes have to pull it. When do you get concerned with a bison cow?

    • @nataliegraham9552
      @nataliegraham9552 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      Yes, I was concerned as well. Hopefully she eventually passed the rest of the placenta. With cattle, horses and other livestock you can monitor and treat for retained products of birth pretty easily but bison is a whole other situation. They're super resilient animals but still vulnerable to the same birthing complications and resulting infections.

    • @phyllisclosser1383
      @phyllisclosser1383 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      I noticed the same thing. I was told for cattle you go by the hour. 1 hr after onset of labor the babe should be on the ground, 1 hr after that it should be up and nursing, 1 hr after that the momma should clean out the afterbirth. Maybe this doesn’t exactly apply to bison but this long after she definitely should have passed it I would think.

    I'm not sure why this channel came across my YT feed today, but I can't stop watching it, and seeing Belle Star so obviously devastated was such a relatable emotion. I definitely cried a bit. Then I was cheering on Peaches and hoping that her calf would be okay. Sheesh. I'm already hooked 😳. It makes me wonder if she didn’t have, like humans can, either a placental abruption, or a cord accident, any number of things. I don’t know enough about bison to even know if it ‘translates’. 🤷‍♀️

    Looks as though Belle Star still hadn’t passed the afterbirth when you had to take her calf away. Is that a problem? Hope not. So glad Peaches’ little red dog got up and is doing so well. Keep ranchin’!!

      If not passed, it can cause infections since that’s essentially now rotting flesh inside her. Most animals you want it dropped within an hour or 2 of birth

    It must have been hard for you to see Belle Star following the truck with her baby in the back. But it's admirable how respectful you were towards both her and the calf. Don't ever lose that sensitivity. These are obviously sentient beings who feel pain and mourn loss.

    Feel for Belle Star! And for you. We have lost many dogs over the years! Our lab left us in March, due to bladder cancer. God bless you. I hope she passes after birth soon!

    Thank you Dusty for showing how life can come and how it can go and not sugar coat the whole thing like many channels do. Many out there only show the sunshine and roses aspect and to me that is dishonest content. I am worried about Belle not cleaning out yet, I hope you don't have to try and load her to take her to doc's and she passes that soon for you. To bad you couldn't get any oxytocin into her to help with contractions to clean her out (may have to look into a darting system for medications in these rare instances) if she is not past the timeframe to use it (we would use it occasionally in our female dogs if we were missing a sack after all the puppies were born). I really hope she will be ok. Funny enough we had a dog named Belle Starrz Dakota Sky Angel who we lost in 2021 (15 yr old shih tzu). Hmm thinking you need a Annie Oakley (Annie Oakley R Lil Sure Shot - shih tzu we lost in 2014) yet lol.

    Sorry for your loss. Now I hope Belle Star can lose her placenta and it not cause her an infection. Not sure of the length of time that has passed but was surprised that it was still attached to her when you pick up the calf for burial.
