EPIC Speech from Marine Corps Drill Instructors - USMC Boot Camp Day 1

  • Marine Corps Recruit Training video of the first time new recruits meet their drill instructors on Parris Island.
This is by far one of the most memorable Marine Corps boot camp experiences the new recruits encounter upon arrival for Marine Corps recruit training. Marine Corps drill instructors do a lot more than just yelling at recruits. The literally make Marines and they have one of the hardest jobs in the Marine Corps.
It's not the same as Marine Corps boot camp in the 1960's, but the overall mission is the same. To make highly disciplined, basically trained Marines.
After passing their initial strength test, Marine Corps recruit training begins with a moment these recruits will never forget. It’s time to meet their drill instructors.
They are the backbone of the Marine Corps, demanding perfectionists who monopolize every waking hour of the recruits’ lives. Every second of every day will be spent with these drill instructors who will mold them into Marines. They will instill in them, through their own example, the upmost levels of professionalism, teamwork, discipline, and confidence. They really do make Marines.
The next 3 days is the period known as “Forming.” It is nothing short of learning a new language, a new culture, a fast paced way of life that starts with the willing obedience of every order. Recruits learn a complete new way of speaking and use language and terminology they will use throughout their entire time in the Marine Corps. The Drill Instructors physically, psychologically, and mentally challenge the recruits, including yelling at maximum volume and intimidation, to simulate stress of the battlefield and elicit immediate compliance to instructions.

Nope, recruit training is very different than the Army. I had the pleasure of observing "basic" training at Sand Hill on Fort Benning Georgia. Since these soldiers were going on to become infantrymen they thought it was probably the toughest of the Army. Some Drill Sergeants later came to observe recruit training at Parris Island and off the record said it was unbelievable what the recruits have to endure.
There is no other recruit training like the USMC has, every recruit truly earns that title.

The same as when I was there in '83. To all you who posted to this and said you wouldn't be scared, you have no idea what you are saying. I remember my first day - standing outside the chow hall in a pseudo formation as a 3rd phase platoon came marching at us. We had no clue what to do - stay put, move? Their shirts were dirty from playing the 'rose garden' and as snap and pop as you can get. They marched right up to us, did an oblique, straightened, and obliqued back. Our jaws dropped. Could not understand a word their Drill Instructor said. The most impressive thing I had ever seen.

+Joker Vids Don't believe that for a minute. Navy SEALs are one of the best in the business and I've never heard of any Navy instructors mistreating men as the USMC does. I enlisted April 26, 1972 and we all were punched, kicked, fingers in our eyeballs, denied food regularly, struck with rifles, and anything else they could get a hold of, made to get in a push-up position only using our elbows instead of our hands on the old wooden cracked decks (floors) until our elbows were bleeding, and if a recruits back bowed, he got a fist in his spine or a boot in the ribs. I could go on but you get the idea. I was and am still proud to be a Marine but the abuse inflicted on us was the reason I didn't make a career of the Marine Corps. Oh, and for those wondering, the D.I.'s told us that if we admited to being mistreated to the interveiwing officer, we would not graduate and be required to stay in limbo in a recruit platoon until an investigation was completed, not a good idea. so we all said "no sir" and went home.

+Spike Ralph you misunderstand me, I don't condone mistreatment of recruits or trainees, but I believe in coming down hard on them when something they do or think is wrong. I'm harsh but fair, I wouldn't make them do anything undignified, and certainly If it's a fault in their ability not in their discipline, I'll work with them constructively to better their soldering skills.

Yea abuse was an everyday happening on Parris Island back then, maybe today as well. On my 3rd week at Parris Island i had my nose broken for eye fuckin a SDI. And everything you stated is true. The beatings with rifles, the beatings in general, the mote ditch, and so on. And this captain is full of shit by saying if you have a problem report to your SDI or if you are mistreated report it as well to your SDI. Yea, that's the first fucking thing you wanna do. There are a lot of people disrespecting the Marines and their training methods, and I feel obligated to quote A Few Good Men...
"We live in a world that has walls, and those walls have to be guarded by men with guns. Who's gonna do it? You?... I have a greater responsibility than you can possibly fathom. You curse the Marines. You have that luxury...
My existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, saves lives.
Deep down in places you don't talk about at parties, you want me on that wall -- you need me on that wall. We use words like 'honor,' 'code,' 'loyalty.' We use these words as the backbone of a life spent defending something. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the blanket of the very freedom that I provide and then questions the manner in which I provide it.
I would rather you just said 'thank you.'"

Hahaha movie quotes! Seriously! All I'm saying is that in my experience no other allied / western military adopted this robot pantomime in training. It's just laughable. Like, what does it actually achieve? Does anyone ever look at that guy and think, I want to be him? No because he's the bellend who went through trg getting ragged and then carried a chip on his shoulder until he could go back as an instructor and be that bellend, and don't tell me he's there because he's the best. He's there because he lives locally and smashed it down on his posting order or some other spurious reason. It's time shit like this was cast off to the sea where it belongs.

I love my country and consider myself a patriot. I was a 4F back in 1994 out of high school for medical reasons. I’ve tried to turn my desire to serve into an appreciation for those that have, are, and will in my place. I wanted to be a marine and I respect what they do and how they do it. All that aside I also have a very stupid sense of humor and lack poor self control when it comes to laughter. I assure you I’d have laughed at the DIs and got my ass kicked. They’re trying so hard to be scary badass hardcore guys that they sound comical. Boot camp might’ve been the worst time in my life if I’d been allowed to enlist.

When I went into boot camp in the early 80's, we didn't have this. Our first early morning was a ride from the airport and being screamed at every point of the day. We got our heads shaved, clothes, to the barracks, then to a class room where the Battalion Commander was introduced, as well as the Chaplains or Rabis, then our Drill Instructors. We watched a movie, Sand Of Iwo Jima and then back to the barracks to be yelled out some more. And not my series but a series ahead of this did have a problem with a DI. One kid wrote a letter home to his congressman father and told about an incident of beating from one DI. They locked the whole platoon into a squad bay, and NCIS came in. DI went bye bye as well as the other DI's. They were put into a limbo situation until new DI's were assigned. It was a long 12 weeks, but I have the fortunate position of having an Associated Degree when I went in. I was the Whiskey Locker Private, the Scribe for the whole series, and the Hygiene private that followed the DI's during his night inspection and made up the Night Watch. Sometimes I didn't even go to train because I was doing their paperwork. I had to write down on Index cards, for 9-12 DI's the training schedule for the day. I had an automatic spot for LCpl at graduation, shot expert, and had a 300 pft. But my good they fucked with me all the time. I would be doing paper work and they would bother me non stop, everytime they would walk in I had to jump up and call for attention, even though I was the only one there. I did so many pushups when my brother who was a Navy Lt, would write on Navy Envelopes that "Marine's Suck" and other stuff. He tortured me. The Series Commander and XO were 2 1st Lt's who also would mess with me. Because they understood that I was going to a reserve unit after 2 years and finish my degree. They kept pushing me to go into Infantry. I graduated as the series guidon bearer following my Lt with the series flag. And when we did eye's right I was to drop the flag level. Then I went to Infantry training, then Recon. Went to the reserves, got my Degree, then back to being yelled at at OCS. It was like spending 6 years of my life from enlisted to officer at being yelled at by my father. BYW, he got his commision in the Army in 1951 and spent 36 years as an officer. Those years, were truly the best years of my life.

I graduated from USMC OCS in summer of 87.’ I enjoy watching these DI videos as our DI’s were PI DI’s and after week 5 began making it clear that they saw themselves superior to the “Hollywood” DI’s out of MCRD SAN DIEGO. In any event, what I’ve always wondered (and any DI’s out there please let me know) why at the recruit depots the recruits meet their DI’s in a very formal ceremony complete with oaths. Why? We met our DI’s that first evening at 0 dark 30 after a full day of leisurely admin processing. All I remember is the din of shouting and racks tipping over (with candidates aboard) and foot lockers flying. That, ladies and gentlemen, was how it was there and then. I have to say that my introduction was worse than I thought it would be. I knew I’d face a tornado but I thought at least I’d see it coming. I assumed the next morning we’d get some other rude introduction. Nay, nobody was safe. It was some hazing deal and it got our immediate attention. It wasn’t until week 8 or so that our DI’s began to “warm” up to us mostly since we were the remains of a once admin 60+ man platoon. We graduated 27. That’s how it should be at OCS I suppose. Anyway, our DI’s were proud of us and we of them. We managed to win some company or larger drill comp and that was a real feather in their caps too so they praised us and that really instilled confidence and some swagger. These guys were very hard on us but they were doing their duty to screen for Officer types who would at least not likely get their Marines killed out of stupidity or negligence. I think of them now and then and all of my platoon mates one of whom was killed on active duty when his Harrier crashed at Cherry Point in 93.’ Anyway, there must be a reason for the differing introductions.
