Hi Christy, thank you so much for your videos... I made my very 1st 4 foot sign for a customer using your method so thank you for explaining so well... I do have a couple questions what kind of paint do you use, do you brush it on or spray it on because after removing my vinyl stencil I had some of the white paint peel up so after you paint it white do you use something to seal it with before you lay your vinyl stencil down and also pricing what video do you talk about that on because I haven't found it yet or accidentally missed it.. I absolutely loved working with the luann board... I'm use to making routered wood signs so my wood is always an inch thick but I'm expanding my very small business into these kinds of signs as well but I need to know how to price if you could help me please...Thank You again💖
That is so awesome I am so glad for you! I typically use Gliden paint, and other interior paints like Valspar and Sherwin Williams if I have them on hand, for the base. I let my base coat dry a long time, overnight is best. Also pulling stencils off against the grain of the wood does help not to pull paint or wood. I don't let the stencils dry too long, never more than 10 mins, just barely dry. I have not used sealer over white before but that could be a good option if you still have problems. As far as pricing I usually take the cost of materials on each sign times 3, as a starting point. Sometimes that may have to be adjusted up or down depending on time spent on a sign or how much customizing and detail a customer wants. But I have found that formula works for me mosts of the time. I hope that helps a little!
Thank you this video was full of helpful tips; suggested font, how to mount large pieces. I have a few questions. I didn't see what you did to slice besides making a square and I was wondering how you make a swash on your ipad and upload it to your Cricut design space.
Hi thank you! To slice I created a square and placed it over the area I wanted separate. Then I selected both the square and image together and then hit "slice" at the bottom right of the canvas. To make swashes I draw in a program called Procreate .. I bought and downloaded it from the app store. I use the apple pencil with my iPad to draw. I then send the png to my computer and upload it to Cricut Design Space. I will try and do a video on how to do this. 🙂
I have a bunch of card stock prints I want to frame like this. Would you suggest doing the same process for those but to just staple it on a piece of plywood and then add the frame?

Hi thank you! It took me a while to learn how to use all the saws I would suggest watching some videos on the proper way to cut materials with the bigger saws if you are thinking of using them ... all my tools came from Lowes and Home Depot.
Not sure if Im the only one but when I remove the vinyl pieces with tweezers or the weeding tool, it leaves little holes in the wood from the picking, I tried this with oracle 651, could that be why? ( stickiness) or is that unavoidable?

why not wait until the end to stain the wood instead of staining it twice or do all your sanding before staining? Ever consider 45 degree angles for the framing? How do you hang it? Does the luann hold up to weather or humidity? is this indoor or outdoor sign? Does the framing ever split when you nail it or do you drill pre-holes? How abut gluing prior to nailing to keep it together longer? Not much info on the tutorial.
Hi! I'm not sure what you have in Canada I get mine from Lowes... Amazon doesn't carry it.. try stains with the name dark walnut I think they are similar. I wipe it off after staining if it appears to dark.

Hi. I like to paint the sign board the day before if I can, the vinyl sticks so much better when pulling off the transfer. But if I don’t have a day I will wait at least a few hours. 👍🏻
Of course it’s a word I use it all the time! Do you mean it was that way when you bought it? I have gotten some that had some imperfections especially on one side. But for the most part luan should be smooth. It does sand well so if the splinters are small you can prob sand them out.

☺️ I have dug thru many of those looking for good ones! I would recommend using actual 1x2s. They are a little more expensive but better quality. I find mine at local building supply stores cheaper than Lowe’s. If you still want furring strips I would buy the furring strips in packs of 6 they are bundled together and seem to be a little straighter.
Hi. If you use a belt sander you will need to get belt sander paper (mine is 6”x24”) and 120grit. For orbital palm sanders I use about 220 grit. And I think I use 1-1/4” 18ga brad nails on the frame corners and 1” on the sign board.👍🏼
Hi. I have made signs with something like fiber board, temporary service board (the brown kind) if that’s what you mean. I mostly use luan, plywood and pine now as they are more sturdy.

Sure! I almost always find the fonts I use from either Creative MArket or HungryJpeg.com. Here's a list of fonts I love and use a lot. Hi sure! I have two kinds, the electric one is Stanley Electric Nail/ Staple Gun and it can use up to 5/8” long brad nails or staples. The manual one is a Stanley ProShooter. Not sure if they’re still available but should have some links in my videos for it!

Hi! Thank you so much for watching! It depends on the project which matls I use. Luan is a bit more rustic than finished birch plywood sheets and also less expensive per sheet so it just depends on the look you want and the price. But I use both all the time. Regular plywood (not finished) is a little too rough and has too many splinters for me. I have not ordered luan thru the mail so I'm not sure how it ships. I will go over how I come up with prices in this weeks video I will start filming today. Hope that answers your questions!

I first tried B grade 3/8 plywood...it was difficult to use! Lots of splinters and paint bleeds.. I'm thinking about trying out luan since you have success with it. I should of worded my shipping question better. I'm assuming you sell online.. Do your finished luan signs ship well?

I wrap signs in clear wrap or bags, and bubble wrap (1 layer) and ship them in boxes for their size. If you are wondering about shipping cost it can range from $13 and up to ship signs depending on size and weight. I think that is a whole other video! If I sell on Etsy or eCommerce (website) I input all that info to calculate shipping for buyers.

Hi thank you! I do seal mine with a matte acrylic sealer after the vinyl is on or you can seal before placing the vinyl either way.👍🏻

My luaun board was splintery (not even a word🤣)...it had some splintering on the front. Do you ever have that problem?

Hi I use mostly water based paints...Valpar, kilz, and Glidden are my favs when getting vinyl to stick to paint.

Than you! No I typically don’t seal the stain I touch up areas that need it with more stain after sanding the last time.

Hi! That has been a while but at that time I mainly used minwax jacobean. I kept it lighter by wiping the excess off when staining.

Hi. You would need;
- luan board (4’x8’ sheet)
- 1x2 boards (8’ long, 2 each)
- 1” nails, staples or brads (I use 18ga)
