    the fuzzy sandy particles can be wood fibres. I always lightly wet the bare wood - let it dry, sand down all nubs, then paint.

    • @AppalachianHomeCo
      @AppalachianHomeCo  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi! I use to use stencil all the time until I started using vinyl. It’s soooo much easier and saves so much time to not have to prep your stencil, then paint several layers with drying time between layers, to get a perfect stencil. I still will use stenciling but only if there is a color of vinyl I can’t get or if I want a certain look. Stenciling looks nicer sometimes but mostly vinyl is great.👍🏻

    Not sure if Im the only one but when I remove the vinyl pieces with tweezers or the weeding tool, it leaves little holes in the wood from the picking, I tried this with oracle 651, could that be why? ( stickiness) or is that unavoidable?

    • @AppalachianHomeCo
      @AppalachianHomeCo  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi thank you! Shipping for a sign like this is around $20 depending on where you ship. Smaller signs are less. Etsy calculates.the shipping when customers purchase and they pay before I ship. Then I just purchase shipping labels from my Etsy account. Other wise you can use USPS website to figure shipping based on length width and height, and weight of a package.

    • @AppalachianHomeCo
      @AppalachianHomeCo  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi! Ooh been there before😬. On the vinyl there is a couple things you can do. If you lightly sanded the sign after painting to remove roughness try going back over it with another coat and a small foam roller, let dry overnight. If that doesn’t solve then it’s the paint. Some paint WILL NOT work well with vinyl for some reason. Valspar satin paints seems to work great, Gliden works well, Behr is NOT the best for vinyl for me. I don’t know what the difference is but there is one. Drying for 24 hours does help tho. On the contact paper try using a light grip mat vs. a standard grip if u have one. I use old mats and tape the corners sometimes with contact paper. Also try adjusting the pressure in your material settings, it may be cutting too deep for your brand contact paper. I’d start in increments of 10 and go down until you still get cut thru but less “wrinkling”. Hope that helps!

    • @AppalachianHomeCo
      @AppalachianHomeCo  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi! I use both 631 and 651. I prefer permanent on signs but I can’t always get permanent vinyl that’s matte. Most permanent is glossy, except for black and white. So if I don’t want glossy letters in a certain color I use 631. Mod podge is good for temp vinyl but I don’t use it for permanent much unless it starts bubbling or coming up off the paint. Where do you fine the pine frame boards? Loved this video!

      Hi thank you so much! I usually get either furring strips from Lowe’s for the frames, or rip them out of pine 1x8s for a local lumber store.

    OMG. I don't think I've ever seen a channel with so many videos on Farmhouse signs! I don't know if you're ever going to get 70,000+ views for this kind of video again but you should do what you enjoy doing and not just what brings in the views. Try doing collabs with other channels! That helps get your channel seen because your other crafts are really cute!

    How much would you charge for that type of sign?

    • @AppalachianHomeCo
      @AppalachianHomeCo  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi! I think this one I charged $60 for but the buyer was local. I would charge around $80 or more if I were shipping because of all the shipping hassle and packaging materials!👍🏻

    Do you have a cricut joy? I got one hoping to make bigger signs like this. I definitely will make this one. I LOVE it! Thank you for sharing.

    • @AppalachianHomeCo
      @AppalachianHomeCo  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not yet! I need to do some research on it but would really love to have one in the hopefully near future. I think it cuts a much smaller area than a regular Cricut, and I want to check and see what materials you can cut with it. Thank you so much!!

    What determines if you do a stencil or a decal??

    • @AppalachianHomeCo
      @AppalachianHomeCo  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi. I usually use stencils in I want a more rustic look or if I want the letters antique looking. The vinyl is crisp and clean and I use that for more modern and polished looking signs. Also if there is a color I can’t get in vinyl I will stencil!

    Did you use the cricut explore or the maker ? Does it matter ?

    • @AppalachianHomeCo
      @AppalachianHomeCo  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi! For simple vinyl cutting it doesn’t really matter which machine you use they both cut the same. But for this I did use the Maker because i use it all the time for lots of different things and just always have ready to go!

    Hello! So I have been watching some of your videos which I find helpful. I am confused about the printing. I own a critcut but I have never used it. I want to print a sign like this but would I only need a black vinyls to transfer it onto my wood?

    • @kaylawong5478
      @kaylawong5478 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’ve been in previous videos that you use contact paper?? (Which I have no clue what that is) but I see from this video it’s just vinyl is that right?

    • @AppalachianHomeCo
      @AppalachianHomeCo  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi! Yes for this sign you would need the black vinyl as well as transfer tape to apply it to your sign. Clear peel and stick is what I was referring to and it does work like transfer tape. I found it in the shelf liner section and have used it before. I now use regular transfer tape Greenstar Layflat clear medium tack from US Cutter and also Transferrite medium tack clear I think I also found on US Cutter.

    Do you seal after applying your vinyl! Made my first sign of this type for Mother's Day and need to finish up!

    • @AppalachianHomeCo
      @AppalachianHomeCo  4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Hi! Congrats on your first sign! Yes I usually use Mod Podge Matte Sealant Spray on most signs. Just make sure all your letters are attached well or the sealant will curl them. They do have a glossy version if you like a glossy finish.

    Thank you so much for this tutorial! Your sign is absolutely beautiful. What is your favorite paint to use on your signs and how long do you let it cure before adding the vinyl lettering? Do you seal your sign before applying the. Only? I have had issues with my transfer tape (Walmart duck brand) pulling up my paint even after sticking the transfer tape to my clothes first.🥴 You just make it look so effortless.😍☺️

    • @AppalachianHomeCo
      @AppalachianHomeCo  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you that’s so nice of you☺️ Mt favorite paints are Valspar, Gliden, and Kilz. They work really well with vinyl and will allow the vinyl to stick after only a couple hours of drying. Other paints I have to leave overnight. And I have had many comments about the contact brand from Walmart pulling up paint! It depends on the paint and drying time. I switched to regular transfer tape and like it better I use Greenstar brand Layflat clear medium tack👍🏻👍🏻 If you still have problems pull off the transfer against the grain of your wood and it will help some.😊

    How did you resize / cut the font. .

    • @AppalachianHomeCo
      @AppalachianHomeCo  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi! I use the slice feature in Design Space to cut the letters most of the time. Makes sure the letters are welded together first, then draw a shape like a square and place it over the part you want cut out, then select both the square and the letters and slice them. This will cut out the letters within the square. Hope that helps!

    How much did everything cost to make ??

    • @AppalachianHomeCo
      @AppalachianHomeCo  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi! The luan was $16 for a full sheet and I used about 1/3 sheet so $5.50, plus framing which cost $1.00 for 8’ ( I used 16’ so that would be $2). The paint was low cost I buy in gallons so say $1 for paint, and cost for vinyl was about $3. So I would say the whole material cost was around $11-$12.
