Paper Trimming for Beginners, How to Cut Cards, Windows, Small Paper Pieces etc.

  • I was asked by a viewer, Jennie, if I would show her how to use her paper trimmer to cut small pieces of paper and had questions about using her paper trimmer in general. I have tried to simplify paper trimming so this video is more for the beginning paper trimmer and not the more advanced crafter.
    The first thing I recommend, is making marks on your cut bar at 4 1/4", 5 1/2", 7" and 10" as these are the most common card cuts.
    I show how to make a template for a 5 x 7" card by taking a 12 x 12" piece of paper and trimming off the weird edge by laying your paper to the 12" mark and trimming off anything beyond the perforation on the paper.
    To make a 5 x 7" card, you cut your paper at 10" and then turn it one turn and cut it at 7" and then fold the 10" side at 5" so the card then becomes a 5 x 7" card.
    To trim paper that has a pattern on it, make a template of the size card you want to use with copy paper or junk mail and keep it to lay on your design. Once you decide which direction you want you paper cut, you can lay your template over the paper and line the paper up to the trim line then cut it. Turn it and put the template where you want it, then put it to the cut line and hold your paper in place and remove the template and cut. Turn again, and repeat the same process on the fourth side.
    Cutting smaller pieces of paper can be difficult. Jenni wanted me to show her how to cut a 1 1/2" x 2 1/2" piece of paper. To do that, take a long piece of paper and using the marks on your paper trimmer, line up the paper at 1 1/2" and trim a long piece of paper. Then turn it sideways and moving the paper to the 2 1/2" mark on your paper trimmer, cut the paper. Then move the paper again to the 2 1/2" mark and cut. Do this until your paper isn't long enough to trim.
    To make a standard card that's called an A2 size card, take a full size piece of card stock that is 8 1/2" x 11" and line the paper on the 11" side and trim it at the 5 1/2" mark and cut your paper in half. Then you will score it at 4 1/4" so it folds in half to create a 4 1/4" x 5 1/2" card.
    You can also cut your paper on the 8 1/2" side and cut it in half at 4 1/4". Then score it on the 11" length at 5 1/2" to create a top fold card.
    To cut a box out of your card, it's easiest to draw your box on your card and know the measurements for your box (on the paper). You'll need to know the left and right vertical line measurements from the card fold as well as the top and bottom line measurements from the bottom of the card.. The slits that you cut from top to bottom are simple. You'll line your paper up to the line you drew (and measurement you wrote) and cut the paper to the top and bottom of your box. On the top and bottom, you'll turn your paper sideways and trim the top and bottom to meet the other cut lines.
    I recommend the 12" paper trimmer from Cricut that retails for $15 without a coupon and is available at all big craft stores. It has been a better trimmer for me as I had a lot of trouble with the wire in the bigger Fiskars trimmer that I previously recommended and found it to be too big of a hassle for me to use. Fiskars replaced the cut bar and ultimately the trimmer, and I continued to have issues with it even though I kept changing the blade on the 12" trimmer. Renate, another subscriber, suggested you check MayMay's TH-cam channel for discount codes for it. I bought mine at Joanns' with a coupon and spent $7.50 for it.
    I hope this helps the newer crafter in trimming paper. More experienced paper trimmers will find easier ways to produce these cuts, but I wanted to simplify for the beginner.

    Great tips! I was about to buy another paper trimmer because I needed a 1” x 14” strip of paper to make a belly band for a wrap card when you mentioned folding the paper (have a 12” trimmer). You saved my sanity by giving me another perspective. Many thanks! 😻

      So glad I could help. I know what it's like when you see a project and think, "I'll need to buy a bigger die cutting machine, or paper trimmer to do that." I've also really considered buying a Scan n' cut, as it would make it so I don't have to buy dies, but then I realized most of the dies I use aren't to cut out an image, but for backgrounds and sentiments, and so far I've talked myself out of buying one, but like I said, it's hard to not buy these tools when they seem like they'd be able to help craft easier......Please let me know if you have any ideas you'd like me to cover in a video...saundralparker@yahoo.com...Sandy

      Tonya, Thank you so much. Jennie sent me an email and said she's asked several YT to do this video. I'm sure there are a lot of new stampers that don't know a lot of the terms we use, like A2, so thought it would help a lot of people. I know I had absolutely no clue when I bought and used my first trimmer. So glad you liked it and that an experienced crafter thought I explained things well. I was really confused trying to explain cutting a box out of a card front, as it's one of those things you just do. Explaining it is a different matter altogether. Thanks for your nice note. Sandy

    So grateful for your instructions on the paper trimmer. I just recently bought one this year (2022). I have seen different tutorials on it but no ideas like you have shown. The biggest mistake companies make on their products is that they never put an instruction book with designs and how to use the products. They need to be more helpful if they want to sell their products.

      I'm left handed and never knew I was using the paper trimmer backwards from everyone else. I've made other videos showing you more ideas for your paper trimmer and score board. th-cam.com/video/3q5lRSaslTE/w-d-xo.html I'm happy to answer any additional questions you might have. When I started watching videos on card making, people kept saying A2 sized card, and I couldn't figure out what that was, and decided when I made videos, I'd only make reference to A2 sized cards after I gave the measurements for it, so people know what it is...by the way, it's a standard sized piece of cardstock cut in half...that's folded to make a 5 1/2" x 4 1/4" card. Most card makers in the US use this size or a 5 x 7" card (and that's the front of the card...open, the card is 10" x 7".) Email me any time at saundralparker@yahoo.com Sandy

    Another great tutorial, Sandy. I started with a Fiskers trimmer that had a terrible display of the measurement markings, orange on orange! It was also a rotary blade that never cut straight because it leaned side to side when you pushed or pulled to cut. Now, I have a Stampin Up trimmer and the Cricut trimmer you used. I like the portability of the Cricut when I go crafting at my sister's home. Thank for sharing.

      Patricia, Thanks for such a nice note. Since you have the Stampin' Up trimmer, I watched a video from A SU rep and she said she changes her SU trimmer blade weekly or bi weekly and thinks her customers should change theirs maybe once a month. Could that be accurate? I'd really love to know. I can't find a replacement blade for our Cricut in the store I bought mine in (but I haven't checked online). Have you had to change yours? Sandy

I'm going to be checking out more of your videos this week and if I can't find something, I'll definitely ask. I'm pretty limited with time, our new baby is just six months, so I'm mostly on the hunt for quick projects so I can feel like I'm able to finish things. +Crafting For Almost Everyone Thanks for linking that video!!! I had actually watched part of it before and lost it in all the hustle, but I had used your advice and got a few of those tools in the beginning, although the only score board I found was much smaller. It does have the added bonus of the envelope score on the back, with several sizes. I just wish I had made it all the way to the mention of AliExpress, off to check them out soon! sometimes I can only find five minds to watch before I leave for different errands so it can take me FOREVER to get through any video, but yours are very informative. like using cheap paint brushes for color dusters! I have been looking for just such an alternative, thanks a bunch for that! (savings of $22.50 over the shave brushes I was about to order!!)

    • @craftingforalmosteveryone

      Leona, Sorry for such a late reply. Please make sure you trim about 1/2 to 3/4" off the top of those brushes in a straight line to make sure they work the way you want them to. I just write the color on the side, like yellow, red, blue, green, so I know which brush to use with any colors in the family, and it works great. Let me know how they work for you at saundralparker@yahoo.com.

    Thanks for explaining so thoroughly! Great tutorial for beginners! I have the big Fiscars one and I really like it, but the blades go blunt fast (maybe it's my fault, I don't know), so I need to change them quite frequently.

    • @craftingforalmosteveryone
      @craftingforalmosteveryone  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Elin, Thanks for the nice note. I watched a video from a Stampin' Up rep where she said the average crafter should change their blades monthly. Could that be right? She said she changes hers weekly or bi-weekly. I'd never heard that before and would love it if anyone else would chime in and let us know. Obviously you change your blade when you start having an edge that isn't clean, but is there any other rule of thumb for when to change a blade? Sandy

    • @ElinT13

      That is probably right, I need to change more often. And no, I never heard of any other rule of thumb, either.

      What type of paper trimmer do you have? If you can be specific with the brand and type, I can look it up so I can give you a really good answer to it. Most trimmers have an arm that pulls down like mine..does yours have one of those? If you can email me all of this at saundralparker@yahoo.com, I'll see it much faster and will get back to you more quickly. Am really glad you asked.

    I am a beginner to card making. I have never been good at math, but I feel like an idiot! Lol I don't know what I'm doing wrong... I have a we R memory keepers paper trimmer and I measure my paper to 5 1/2" and cut but when I turn it to cut the 6" in length I first measure my leftover paper and they're never cut right. What I mean by that is the sheets are lopsided, I can't never seem to get the paper to cut staight! And I'm making sure to keep my sheets against the edge... And it throws me off so bad I can't seem to get past that point! If you have any tips for me I'd really appreciate it!! Thanks

    • @craftingforalmosteveryone
      @craftingforalmosteveryone  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      First, can you tell me what is the size of the card you are trying to make (just give me the measurements of the front of the card)..
      .Next, when you put the paper in the trimmer, you should always be lining up the paper with the measuring bar at the bottom of the paper trimmer. If you turn your trimmer around so the measuring bar is at the top of the trimmer, you won't get a straight edge because you won't be able to hold the paper in place and cut. So if the measuring bar is at the bottom (like I show in the video), and you want to make a standard card size (which is 1/2 of a piece of card stock), you'd first cut the paper in half by lining the right edge up with the 5 1/2" mark (assuming you have the long 11"side of the paper against the measuring bar and holding the paper in place with one hand, trim with the other. If you do that and take your paper out of the trimmer, you can score it at 4 1/4" and it should be straight. By making that one cut, you've given yourself two cards. It's also easier to put the blade above the paper and pull the blade toward you for an even cut.
      Often, we get unstraight edges because we don't put the paper in right. Maybe you could try putting scrap paper in your trimmer and follow along with what I'm doing in this video. I'm here to help, so just ask, and if I need to make a follow up video, I'll be glad to do so. Paper trimming can be very frustrating. Also, can you tell me what type of trimmer you have from WRMK? The only one I found is this one. tinyurl.com/ycn43gfq If that's the kind of trimmer you have, then all of my instructions are worthless....please email me at saundralparker@yahoo.com and we'll talk about it. Don't worry, I'll help you through this...Sandy PS I really like your screen name..

    Woah I'm a whole two years late but I want to thank you for this video! I have the same trimmer (and I've had it for roughly 4 years now?) and yet I can count with both hand the amount of times I've used it (I learned that I hate scissors but I came to hate my trimmer even more, hence why I don't use it much). I recently started crafting again and I realized that I've been using the trimmer wrong this whole time. This was very helpful! I do have a question though.
    What are some tips for cutting straight? For instance, I know my measurement and I cut the paper, but the edges don't line up. I personally think that it's bc I don't hold the paper properly in place, but I might be doing something wrong too. Do you have any particular tips/advice for that?
    Thank you so much for this video!

    • @craftingforalmosteveryone
      @craftingforalmosteveryone  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not a problem...I think the issue is making sure your paper is tight against the bar you pull down, and then when you trim the paper, put it at the inch mark you want to cut it at, and then hold the paper that's on the left side of the cut bar..It's also easier for me if I pull the cut tool toward me, so it should start at the top and pull it down the paper (pressing down at the same time you are pulling it.) I hope that helped...if it didn't, send me an email and we'll talk it through..Sandy

      Crafting For Almost Everyone Do you think the blades last longer than the Fiskars wire paper cutter?

    • @craftingforalmosteveryone
      @craftingforalmosteveryone  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I had trouble with the larger Fiskars wire paper trimmer. I'll admit that it was probably my fault because sometimes I would cut paper on my lap...I think it made the wire unstable, so my paper edges were often frayed...so I had to change my blades often, only to figure out it was the wire and not the blades...sent a couple of the trimmer back to the company before I decided it must be me...My blades last a lot longer, but only because of my craziness...haha...
