I feel the same way. I’m typing and preparing documents for juvenile probation. Things such as violations with a warrant, violations, transfers, terminations, letters and memos, case history, name, change, and all the documents that actually are going to court fall on me to do for a few officers.

I live in Canada. I am currently in a two-year paralegal program. I decided to become a paralegal because I have a strong passion for law matters. I am highly practical, and I research a lot. My advantage here is that I have been exposed to many court cases without working in a law firm. I currently have a human rights matter against a big institution, which I am going to win. I recently got my friend's POA case dismissed because the "information" was not laid. The case was phony, and I proved it through a "motion to dismiss." My brother got in trouble with the law years ago and walked in the courtroom, filled with men, and I argued that they were wrong because they were attempting to send him back to Remand. They violated his charter rights as well. If I had the money and I was younger, my first option would have been law school. This video is highly informative and valuable. Thank you.

When I was doing my LAA training (in BC, Canada), several students wanted to jump straight from the LAA program to the paralegal program. Our teachers highly discouraged that, they said we shouldn’t try to train as a paralegal until we’d had a few years experience working in a law firm.
Im doing a paralegal certificate at a different school now, after having been an LAA for five years. At my current school, you aren’t even eligible to enter the program unless you are currently working as an LAA, and have three years’ experience.

    I have two questions:
    1) You say it isn’t necessary to go to school to be a paralegal to eventually go to law school but that it’s a lot of parallel schooling. When choosing an undergrad, wouldn’t it be beneficial to have that education or introduction to law? If not, what would be a better undergrad degree to pursue?
    2) You both mention the importance of experience, but how do I get the experience if experience is strongly preferred for these available positions?

I really thought I'd make it to law school, BUT, I really love the job I have and community work I do, but I wouldn't mind working for legal aid or something like that to bring in extra income. Also, can paralegal's make their own business using their skillset?

Rules differ in other countries, and the education appears to differ from state to state. I have three college degrees two associates one liberal arts, the other paralegal and a bachelor of public administration with emphasis in justice administration. Paralegal degree the beginning courses were intro into the legal system, differences civil criminal law, what is a motion, what is a complaint, what is an answer to complaint, what are interrogatories…what are sources of law. We learned how to draft these documents. In another class we did legal research, writing and analysis. In other classes we had specific legal fields in terms of their specific documents. For example in family law we would go over financial statements, write spreadsheets, and draft orders of protection. In intellectual property we would learn about patients, copyrights, trademarks and trade secrets. In other course we did due diligence work, using internet tools to find company owners and associates, name changes of company, identify people there relationships, and etc…much like a private investigator. In legal ethics we learned about the rules we must follow as a paralegal, about courtroom rules, document rules and model rules for attorneys. At the end we took part in an internship with a law firm and acted as a paralegal to that law firm. Majority did civil law, mine was the only criminal law. While there, I helped prepare pleadings, prepare files for trial, organize legal documents, prepare clients for trial (tell them about the process, how they should dress, what prosecutors might say, when they should speak and should be silent, prepare a schedule for them tell them where to park for court, and overall just make sure that they have the best defense possible). Basically the four year degree packed into two years. I have drafted pretty much every legal document you can imagine, civil and criminal as well as prepared IRAC memos. Issue, Rule, Analysis and Conclusions memos. In public administration it was similar but more in-depth covering the laws, systems and management of organizations in my case Police Departments, Corrections Departments, Sharifs Offices etc.

I’m typing and preparing documents for a juvenile probation department in California. Documents include; Terminations, Court Orders, Petitions, Warrants, Violations, Violations with a Warrant, Dispositions, Request for Termination, Transfers, Status Reviews, Assessments, Warrant Notice, Letters, Memos, Case Histories and the list goes on. I graduated high school but have no higher education. What I know has been taught to me with on the job training. Would a legal office see this as a good potential for hire?
My title is Office Services Technician and they pay me $21.00 an hour. I feel like in reality I’m a Legal Assistant.

It sounds like the attorney's statement was a bit contradictory. While a four-year degree in paralegal studies may be preferred for some positions, it is not always necessary. However, it is important to note that education can still be valuable in the field of law even an associates which is enough. Ultimately, the requirements and preferences can vary depending on the specific job and employer. It's always a good idea to research and consider different perspectives before making any decisions.

To get into this industry, would it be wise to say, it's best to train as a secretary first and to get maybe a year of experience, and then rank in a higher position to be a legal secretary before training to be a paralegal? In NSW Australia, I know, there's a level 1 for future students who want to train to be a secretary and a level 2, for those who want to be a legal secretary. In that way, are there better chances for those, who want to gain some years of experience under their belt?

Depending on your State law, you can be a paralegal with zero certification and licensing ( like Oregon, for example), or you might need an A.A. where you are. Look into the requirements for your State.
I would say that if there is no legal requirement for licensure or certificate, then you could become a legal secretary first and then work on your certificate or just get on the job training to become a paralegal by getting hired within the firm you currently work for.

    • @Mmmmkaaay
      @Mmmmkaaay หลายเดือนก่อน

If you can get an entry level position with a firm, even in the mail room, you have a chance to move up with the company as you prove yourself. Of course it depends on the felony. If you were involved with something violent or something that has to do with theft, then you might have a really hard time. But if it was drug possession or something else that doesn't necessarily have to do with your morality, then they should take that into account.

Why do you tell us to leave questions when you don’t seem to have the time to answer them? Easy to reply to the comments that compliment and flatter you. 😒

But how do you get the experience so you're pretty much just hiring old people that's been doing it from the beginning since 1990?? 🤔
What about all the new generation that's coming how do they get that experience? That's one thing that people don't never talk about.

Hey there! I'm currently living in the Tampa area and I graduated with my BA in Criminal Justice almost a year ago now! How realistic would it be for me to get into the paralegal field? What's the pay like? How easy would it be for me to become a paralegal or at least a legal assistant working my way up to a paralegal, even if I don't really have experience in a law firm?

Since the industry is dominated by women, do you think being a male paralegal plays a mayor role when getting hired?

We have had both male and female paralegals. We are always looking for hardworking and experienced professionals.

Law Enforcement doesn’t really like to hire people with CJ degrees, is Law the same with Paralegal Studies?

So what you’re saying is that you interviewed paralegals that were qualified and did the hard work to become one only to not give them a chance? Yeah you are what’s wrong with employment in this world

    1. I think in your discussion you kinda undermine the “level” of a Paralegal.
    2. Analogous to what it is, is that those “those whose calling themselves as paralegals “ but they don’t actually have an education from that field somewhat seems like it is not fair for us “real Paralegals “ because we had the education and title for that! Just because those trained legal assistance in the law firm know and have been doing the job doesn’t mean they can outweigh the person from a Paralegal education.
    3. A Paralegal went through formal education and training about the legal field, not a legal assistant in a law firm.
    4. Please do not call yourself a Paralegal if you’re not one!
    5. Paralegal i think is an underrated course.
    6. Paralegal went thru a hardcore of studies about a law firm’s back office.
    7. Paralegals students are more driven given all the trainings that must be done at the school.

      8. You actually missed some other stuff also like a Paralegal can be certified in for example eDiscovery, in which they offered that as additional course thru a Paralegal
      education.
      9. Also a Paralegal can specialize the type of law they want to engage in or put focus too, like for example a lawyer-they have choices of what types of law they want to practice. Those kinds of things...there’s a lot more things about Paralegal that there’s actually can be discussed.

Sounds like he'd prefer someone to work as an Aasistant, Receptionist, Janitor in a law firm first...then get your degree. Basically, if you have one..oh well..they dont feel like training.

More like a glorified secretary, I work with paralegals how about they focus on grammar and spell check when doing subpoenas and have lawyers check their work how about that
