  • First time the 8 raced together. Double tandem so all seats are different to that which finally raced in Tokyo except stroke and cox. Very good speed but didn't quite have the effortless swing together. A little bit of discrepancy in movement and some tension. Good start though!!!

At the 1:02 mark watch Hamish Bond in #3 quickly wetting his left hand hand in the water without missing a bit

"Ok, best sweep rower in history, we're going to put you in three seat." 😅

#6 is perhaps the person who improved the most between here and the later videos. "Hitting the water" at the catch here, so much smoother later. Also #4 became smoother and more relaxed on the head and shoulders, one of my favs in later videos. (Ok looks like they are also rowing in a headwind here...)

I agree Giovanni. They did get better.

Hamish certainly has perfected the “wet the hand” manoeuvre hasn’t he? Maybe we could formally give it a name? 🧐

What was the purpose of the double tandem? Was it only for training purposes or could you have taken a layout like that to tokyo? Assuming it's possible for a layout like that to win Olympic gold.

It’s a valid rig. It went quite well. We don’t get around to the triple tandem which is one we’ve used before down here in Christchurch.
