    Thanks for this. It's wonderful to hear that the fix actually does work, and to see the impact of the fix on latency. I think it's clear that it was a design decision taken by reMarkable in order to be able to show "the best" latency.
    The official solution by reMarkable should, therefore, offer it as a configuration option, allowing the user to select the amount of smoothing desired, so that the user can make the latency tradeoff (and their solution "should not" require rebooting or restarting the xochitl service)
    ... Let's see how long it takes.... I'm not going to bother holding my breath... :)

    • @PR-hk2ul
      @PR-hk2ul 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You do not need to reboot the device at all for this fix. All you need to do is restart xochitl by running these two commands inside Remarkable. systemctl daemon-reload; systemctl restart xochitl . However, the way done here in the video you have to restart as you only copy files and do not ssh into your Remarkable.

    Thank you, Voja! Your tutorial convinced me to try the hack. I was hesitating at first, because my handwriting looked "okay" on the reMarkable. But whenever I had to export something to send to colleagues, I really noticed the jagged lines very much. I tried many different settings and settled with grade 7. The jagged lines issue is much better now. But my handwriting and sketches still don't look great.
    Another thing. Apart from my rM2 I own a Supernote A6X and a Boox Note 2. But none of those is perfect. I like the form factor of the A6X very much. But I don't like note taking on it. The handwriting just doesn't look nice. And the pen-on-paper-feel is not up to the rM2. The writing experience on the Boox is much better, but I don't like the build quality. It just looks like a generic tablet from several years ago. And I don't like it's UI, the pen-on-glass-feeling and the cheap looking stylus. With the rM2 I am overwhelmed by how beautiful it looks and feels. And UI is so nice and clean. But the many unaddressed software problems are a pain. And the exported PDFs just don't look great. It is better with the hack, but still not what I would like to see.
    You wrote that the Boox Air is your daily driver. Do you think it would be worth selling my three devices and go for the Air, too? Is it really this good?

    • @MyDeepGuide
      @MyDeepGuide  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's going to be the same as Note 2, just much better build quality and design than Note 2. Also, you'll need a different pen (you can see my video on that as well) to have an optimal experience.

    Off topic, but as myself and both of my son's have been using our ReMarkabble it would be more then useful if we were able to switch between one or more open documents. For example having a D&D rulebook open and a character sheet open at the same time and being able to switch between the two instead of having to close one document to open the other. Other than this the Remarkable has been greatly useful in most use cases. Thanx for the well made and thought out vids. :)

    Hi there! For transferring files on the MAC use Filezilla (it's free) - it's also available on the lesser-known Windows 10 platform. I can confirm that this all works very well from a MAC using FileZilla.

    @Voja, I suppose the intended use of FUNKEY'S fix is to have the user execute a shell script (install.sh), as per the 4 steps mentioned in the GitHub repo for installation. Though, thank you for thoroughly testing the smooth-options.

    • @MyDeepGuide
      @MyDeepGuide  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That didn't work for me through the WinSCP.

    • @RamLaska
      @RamLaska 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      He did it that way so that he could do it from within windows, without having to mess with cygwin or the linux subsystem.
      If you read the install shell script, all it does is ask the user which smoothing level to use, scp the selected file other (without the number at the end), and modify the systemd config file.

  • @christossachanas6521
    @christossachanas6521 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Voja, this is a very interesting video and also very helpful for the ones that want to instal the hack but are not familiar with such processes. Great video once again!
    So, in order to have smooth lines, the user has to have latency more or less comparable to the reMarkable competition (note air, etc.). Also, the handwriting seems to be not jaggedy but obviously pixelated, regardlessthe the smoothing.

    • @MyDeepGuide
      @MyDeepGuide  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, since there is no antialiasing on the reMarkable. I think all of the competition at this stage has it, Papyr, Quadreno, Boox and Supernote. And none of them have the jagged lines issue to begin with. Something that the reMarkable leadership should think about.

      @@MyDeepGuide , you have a point here. I agree.

  • @pkoprowski
    @pkoprowski 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    It good (or even great) that someone has fixed the jagged line issue. However we should be aware of the fact that this is a sort of quick'n'dirty solution. Yet still, probably the only one available without access to the source code of rM software.
    The *real* solution, that the rM team really should implement, must work a bit differently. Namely they should either correct the threshold of the input so the position of the pen is already registered with lower noise (however this may be impossible due to some hardware constrains). Or they should post-process the data. So the lines are jagged when draw but after some time (e.g. when the pen is raised from the surface) they are being smoothed. This will not only have *much* lower impact on the latency but the smoothing may use a smarter algorithm than the crude moving average used in this fix.
    Nevertheless, thanks for the video. It is nice to have a clear and objective measure of the impact of this fix on the latency. I wish however that you add samples of how different values of the smoothing radius impact the jaggedness.

    • @innstikk
      @innstikk 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The approach is not a dirty fix, it is what one can do when one do not have source code for the wacom driver. At any rate this deals with the noise floor in a non obtrusive way. Other more advanced filters do not work better. Now as to do post work on the drawn lines by reducing number of nodes and straighting lines is not something I want. If they can just reduce the noise, by giving us a menu to choose level of noise filtering, that would be sufficient.

    • @MyDeepGuide
      @MyDeepGuide  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Prezmyslaw You are welcome to do the examples of all of the smoothing levels yourself. I have shown examples of 8, 16 and 31, and tested the latency of 2, 8, 16, 24, and 31. So if all of that is still not enough for you, then install it and go nuts :)

    • @larrymarso4492
      @larrymarso4492 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      ☝️☝️☝️ this. At best this a demo of what's possible, but which should be implemented as a clean up process on a separate thread. Remarkable will never implement the process here, which takes latency back to the RM1 and all their competitors. But perhaps the separate thread cleanup. But this whole situation is a clusterf*.

    Thanks for your channel! 😊

    • @MyDeepGuide
      @MyDeepGuide  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thank you for watching :) From the past experience from Remarkable 1, if they decide that something isn't a priority in their minds, then they won't do it, regardless of how much their users are sending requests or asking them to add a functionality (Bookmarking pages in books, documents or notebooks, for example).
      Having heard from them that they consider this to be a non-issue, i don't think it's likely that they'll do anything about it. It looks like they simply don't care about what's important to their customers and are focusing only on what they want, which is fine for an overall product vision, i don't have a problem with that at all, but it is a problem if it means ignoring an issue that is turning away your customers.

    Thanks again Voya for a great video, I was curious to compare how the levels of fix related to the other devices that you have D.E.S.T.A. tested and from what I can see from the first touch results it looks like a Funkey Fix level 20 would have the Remarkable 2 inline with the Boox Note Air, and a level 28 would have it inline with Remarkable 1.
    I would be very curious if you could compare the Jagged lines at these two levels against the respective devices, I know that this would be a substantial time investment on your part but I think that it would also be invaluable as it helps get away from the "religion" associated with each of the devices and keeps us rooted in factual evaluation.
    Regardless thanks again for a great video, great depth, and as always top notch quality.

    Great work Voja,although I’m not going to change something on my remarkable 2 at least for now.I purchased the remarkable 2 to use it mostly for drawing and study PDFs and less for writing.The jagged lines are more noticeable if you zoom bigger your drawing or writing.Most serious problem I found is that when I exported my drawing as a pdf or npg to my tablet,it looks of much lower quality and the background of course is clear white in comparison with the screen of remarkable which is much darker.I’m thinking to scan my remarkable on the scanner to see if I can take the actual quality of my drawing but I’m afraid not to make any problem on remarkable.Also I will take a photo of the drawing with my iPad Pro and compare the results.Do you have any better suggestion what I can do?I haven’t seen yet all your deep guides about remarkable so i don’t know if you already mention that problem.I like the simplicity of the device,the build quality and I find it good for drawing but it could be much better.I would like to see more grey tones for drawing to use with the pens,marker and brush,more different brushes and different transparencies for grey tones and for the eraser.Especially for the eraser it would be very nice.Do you think it’s possible for the company to update remarkable 2 with such new features for drawing?

(Side note: great book by Elizbeth Gilbert called Big Magic). Being able to sit, write and enjoy that screen and pen, if you found that with the Remarkable 2, then all the other stuff is clutter. The most important thing to these devices (I feel), is what do we want of them. If it's that quiet place to write, then sounds like you found it.

  • @AIandVisuals
    @AIandVisuals 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    This shows once more the reMarkable company's unfortunate neglect on the software side of the reMarkable, which is its Achilles' heel. It also shows that the better writing latency on the reMarkable 2 came at a price and that they are not willing to work on a fix or at least put in the settings a latency vs smoothness parameter that the user can control to fix this issue. This new settings parameter would then not go over 16, as otherwise the shinning new reMarkable 2 with its "improved" screen will have the same or even poorer writing latency than its previous model, the remarkable 1. It also seems that this is the compromise they mentioned in that email to you.

    I wanted to know how to email remarkable. There is no clear way on their website to contact them, maybe they don’t want input from the customers. I wanted to bring to their attention that Funkey as you clearly demonstrated on your video has a fix, why can’t they get on the ball and give an universal fix as they should. I also have a suggestion to improve or even enhance the experience for the user if I can get an email to them. My suggestion is to link two notebooks, for example I created a bullet journal in remarkable one task is to create a Christmas list , in another notebook I create the Christmas list I would like to link the task to the list. Thanks for listening.

    PLEASE write down your password before doing this so you can access it in case you do something wrong. I found that smoothing at 9 - 12 was the best. There are also other implementations of this fix using IIR and EWMA, but they do not make it better. The straight forward average filtering seems to be the best approach.

    Slightly unrelated, but isn't it strange that the review units did not have the jagged lines issue und also a latency of 21ms according to your test. And now the actually production unit has 27ms latency and jagged lines?

    • @PR-hk2ul
      @PR-hk2ul 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      What is the uncertainty in the way the latency was measured? If filming at 120 fps then one frame is 8.3ms. At any rate human eye can perceive about 24 fps, meaning 41ms. So when you test this you do not notice any lag before you go above that.

    • @MyDeepGuide
      @MyDeepGuide  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's filmed at 480fps, so 1 frame is 2ms, human eyesight is at around 30fps.
      @Marco Hufnagel
      The pre-production unit result is 27ms, sam as the production unit. The 21ms initially reported was my mistake (miscalculation) which i also addressed in one of the following videos. As for the jagged lines, at the time I didn't know that it should be something to look out for, but I have noticed something that I perceived at the time as a bit messier handwriting. So that perception might as well have been the jagged edges issue.

      Why then there is a significant difference between motion picture viewed at 24 vs 60 FPS? Why now 120Hz screen refreshing is becoming industry standard? Because 24 is a minimum to keep the feeling of the smoothness. A MINIMUM.

    • @MyDeepGuide
      @MyDeepGuide  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is fairly simplified article about the topic, but no, it's not a myth (!?) and it's not a simple number, since it depends on the distance from the eyes, eye movement, obejct movement relative to the eye, light conditions, age of the eye and vision persistency. But for general case scenarios, of course that it can be placed in a rough ballpark number. It's completely silly to say otherwise :)

      If it was just down to the jagged lines, yes. But as I said in my Note Air review, it's all of the limitations of the rM device that simply don't make it a device i can use normally at this point.
      So, no. Note Air is my main driver now, and i couldn't be happier with it. As i always said, i do a lot of reading and document marking (not scribbling). Recently i discovered yet another limitation with the reMarkable, which makes it physically impossible for me to get the documents I need onto it (very large documents never successfully sync and thus never get transferred into the device, they keep failing). So no, I'm fed up with the inadequacies of the remarkable's software platform and the company's unwillingness to take their product seriously. I mean c'mon, a new brush and a new font and a slowdown optimization are the updates we've gotten in the past 3 months without a single issue being acknowledged, addressed or solved. While my Note Air has gotten 4-5 updates in November alone, with 99% of the content being fixes and improvements. It's a very easy choice for me.

    I think it's an example of snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. RM2 should have been wonderful, but isn't. It doesn't matter how good the hardware is if the software fails to impress.
    The selling point of low latency comes at the expense of fuzzy and wobbly lines, and a fix puts rm2 latency on par with the competition. This and the lack of all round features, compared to the competition, leaves me wondering the point of buying a reMarkable? I think I'll be returning my two rm2 orders when they eventually arrive and be buying from Onyx.

The word is pronounced SHOchitl, with the emphasis on the SHO. The tl at the end is not tul or the like, as most non-speakers (including most Mexicans) tend to pronounce it, but is a single sound more akin to an l. You’d need to hear it to be able to imitate it! This is why I am using only the mechanical pencil with my Remarkable 1. By construction the mechanical pencil hides this problem and you do not noticing this pixelation, it is not that is fixed but that it is cleverly hided. It is the first thing I noticed when I received my remarkable six months ago. Everyone was praising the remarkable’s hand writing but to me it was hugely lacking in smoothness in comparison to my iPad Pro. It was a mystery to me because I had in the past the first Samsung note 10.1 based on the same wakom technology and I was very happy with the writing experience although that device was lacking considerably in other aspects. The last years I fell in love with my iPad Pro using a mate screen protector but nothing is so good as an e-ink screen. I fell instantly in love with the eink screen although initially I was disappointed with the smoothness of the handwriting given the hype on the Facebook. I thought my signature in iPad Pro is exported in papers like a proper scanned handwritten paper and in remarkable it seems so digital I wonder why there this hype about remarkable’s handwriting quality out there? I came to realise that the best and only solution for me is to use the mechanical pencil and now I am in love also with the handwriting experience of my remarkable. Is instant, quiet with no correction in front of my eyes and the feel of writing on plastic is unparalleled, I do not want to write on glass any more. There are inherent limitations with eink technology, with obviously the elephant in the room being the lack of colour, but as an analogy is like living in the black and white TV era. The technology is not there yet given also the fact that a giant player like Apple seems to not backing this technology yet. My dream device would be hardware wise a lightweight 13.3 colour eink with a plastic flush screen exactly like PAPYR but with Onyx pdf annotation/e-reader software capabilities and the ability to use many different wakom pens like remarkable and onyx. Seems that Max LUMI is the best device so far for me. Does onyx has a similar mechanical pencil that hides this smoothness issue which I guess is an inherit limitation of the current state of eink technology?
