Becoming a Major League Soccer city: What does MLS bid mean for Cincinnati?

- CINCINNATI (WKRC) - Three or four years ago, no one was really talking about professional soccer in Cincinnati.
Tuesday, it appears FC Cincinnati will be the next team in Major League Soccer.
What does this mean for Cincinnati and what is Major League Soccer?
FC Cincinnati is a phenomenon in the sports world. It’s a minor league team that may kick its way into the big leagues in just three years.
It feels like it's cause for the city to celebrate, but why? NKU Professor Joe Cobbs says big league sports bring a city “positive externalities”.
“I think it can also change the calculation about how people think about Cincinnati. When people come in from out of town, I have professors sometimes that come in. I take them down to The Banks, OTR. We've gone to a soccer game when they've been in season and it blows people away. They can't believe it,” said Professor Cobbs.
Cobbs says that can translate into business locating to the city and attracting more young professionals.
Most people will tell you that getting a Major League Soccer franchise is a big deal, but they can't tell you much about MLS.
Ben Sanders and his friends from Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy are pumped about the MLS bid. He's got a cap, but no clue about Major League Soccer.
“I don't know too much about it,” said Sanders.
Lindsey Marcum says she's excited about Tuesday’s announcement.
“I've played soccer my entire life. It's all I do with my free time. But I still don't watch Major League Soccer or any of them,” said Marcum.
Major League Soccer is the sport's highest league in the United States and Canada.
It's a 25-year-old league with 23 teams. They play from March to October. 12 teams make the playoffs and compete for the “MLS Cup”.
The closest regional rival is the Columbus Crew, but they are hoping to move to Texas.
Future MLS clubs are also confirmed for Nashville and Miami.
FC Cincinnati is likely to play for at least one more season in Nippert Stadium while a new stadium is being built in the West End.
The announcement happens Tuesday afternoon at 5:30 p.m.
