- Random strangers often offer unsolicited, uninformed, and flat out wrong advice. They can be mean, belittling and toxic. Creatives in business like photographers are often affected negatively by these random comments from keyboard warriors in the Cheap Seats of The Arena. Here's what we can do to banish them.

I totally needed this today. I'm getting into the world of crested gecko breeding, and my breeding plan has now been picked apart and trampled upon without my even asking for anyone's opinion. I'm all about taking advice, but this has been a really upsetting experience, and I'm glad to know I can deny their opinion with good conscious.

I'm not a pro (meaning make it a primary business) photographer. I retired from one job and am not looking to start another one. I was in business for 36 years and in a part of a business where my work was subject to constant review, second guessing and finger pointing when things went wrong (for most of my career, I was in one of the most hated positions in any company "Project Manager"). My advice to anyone in a business is "don't let the Ba*&@$!s get you down." Especially the internet trolls. I've always found that it is far better to offer encouragement and lifting someone up than to break them down. Encouragement and positive reinforcement does not always mean agreement or unconditional praise, but it is all about how things are said and the spirit in which they are said. I don't buy the "if you have nothing nice to say say nothing at all" philosophy. However, I do strive to always make the other person feel better and be encouraged by the interaction. That may be constructive criticism, advice, or simply listening.

Yeah, I've heard that.... "Ooo... your camera takes great pictures." That was hurtful and disempowering, only because of my perspective, of course. Thinking of it now, I have to wonder if the reason people like my pictures is because of my composition and my perspective of the scene or subject. I've also been told that I see things others don't; and I've been thanked for allowing others to see through my eyes. That's why I named my potential business Carolyn's Vision. I should remember this.

THIS is so TRUE!!! The thing about "Art" is everyone has an opinion and they are not always the same. When I started in Dog Photography I got a lot of comments on my "Style" by people who were "friends" they were not always kind. I liked classic Black on Black, White on White, artistic style, not just your typical dog on a backdrop style. In their next breath they would want me to photograph their dogs but .... "Do it different" The thing is, as an "artist" we have to do what WE enjoy and the people who appreciate our style, will find us. Keep on Keeping on. Monique, I am sure you have also run into the type of people that want to knock your work to make you feel self conscious as they try to talk you down on your price. lol Sorry, I didn't fall off the cabbage truck yesterday.
Right? One of the reasons we love art is because of the variety and vastness of subject matter and style.
Great video! I’ve noticed for myself that the things that sting the most tend to be the things deep down I’m afraid are true. So sometimes it’s worth pausing and looking at something someone says even if it’s mean that throws me off. If there’s some validity to it I can use it as an opportunity to improve, if there’s no validity I can discard it and not let it bother me. It doesn’t mean I accept unacceptable behavior from people, but even things said rudely sometimes can be learning opportunities.

Thanks for the vid - I think this is a topic that will always and forever have "legs". It will never die as long as it involves people, which by it's very nature it does.
About me - I have been involved with photography, mostly as a hobby, but also in a professional capacity on a part time basis, for over 35 years. I was first published and got paid for photos in 1987 (right around there... it was a long time ago, so... could be off a tad). I honestly pulled away from professional photography in the past because I allowed myself to listen to the dissenting voices. I recently have been told I am not a "real photographer" because I do not have a social media presence (which, having dabbled with that in the past I intentionally decided was not where I wanted to spend my time). Interestingly that was by a fairly successful portrait photographer, so yes - even those who are "in the arena" have certain viewpoints that are just pure nonsense. I actually think social media is about the worst form of evil brought upon us by ourselves that can be imagined, but I digress. I make money mostly from events, portraits and headshots now days, and word of mouth referrals keep me busy enough for now.
I've only recently decided to start doing some pet photography because I am a photographer and I have had pets (mostly dogs) my whole life. I love dogs and it actually surprises me I hadn't come to this genre sooner. What I have seen in my quest for learning is that there are different approaches and styles - thanks goodness! Can you imagine what it would be like if everyone shot exactly the same way? Ughh... how boring that would be.
So, no matter what anyone's opinion of your work is, you have to decide how to measure your success and then "to thine own self be true". Keep up the good work! Cheers.

Yeah, so good to call out the naysayers and to ignore them. I don''t blame you for deleting their comments.
As far as the quality of photos goes, that is very subjective. What I find most annoying is someone suggesting a client photo "isn't good." They don't understand that you are there to take photos for your client and that it needs to be meaningful to them. Here is an example of where I've had people tell me a photo "isn't good". They prefer photos with a blurred-out background and a little dreamy. I like those photos too, but suppose the setting is important to the client? What if that setting is a place where they walk all the time or a place very important to them for some other reason? A dreamy photo with a blurred out background is not what they are looking for. To me, if you're a professional photographer, your first priority is to please the customer, regardless of what others think is "good." Again, it's so subjective and an unsolicited critic has no idea of any of these circumstances.

I have no idea why there are trolls out there. Seems like they just love giving their opinion, whether it's right or wrong, they just want to make themselves look superior. it actually just makes them look like jerks. Most people don't look at those comments and say "oh, this person must really know what they're talking about". Nope, most people look at people who spread their negativity and think "what an obnoxious jerk". I think most people see through their horribleness. Glad you deleted them.

First of all, I take photographs for myself. If I can earn a few shekels doing it, then the more, the better. I am under no illusion about how difficult running a business is; I did it for seven years when I did wedding videography. But I only seek advice from those successful in the business I’m attempting to conduct.
I am trying to determine my vision. I am leaning toward pet photography, but not because it is easy. It is not, but I must have a connection from my work. I have mobility issues from numerous surgeries and difficulty getting up and down, which is a negative in pet photography. However, I can concentrate on studio work; I suspect there is work in that area. I’ve even considered the mobile studio.

Imposter syndrome is real. I'm struggling with that right now. I just finished going through Mason SBDC. Seems like they are more geared to having you tweak your website instead of helping me get clients. If I tweak my website one more time I think I'm going to scream so loud you could hear me in Colorado. I am planning on joining your group but I had some expenses lately. I'm trying to save. I think your images are awesome! I suppose there are armchair quarterbacks in every arena. I'm not saying all people are ignorant. I've gotten some good advice from some. It's the arm chair so called "experts" who scare me. Yes, imposter syndrome is real. It's also hard getting out there to work on my business when I have a p/t job with hours that conflict with when I should be out there getting clients. Ugh!
