@@bobatea1950yes. In every myth Calypso is in she cannot leave her island no matter what I'm pretty sure the reason is because she supported Atlas her father in the Titan war so she got exiled as punishment but it depends as myth's tend to vary in details between versions
@bobatea1950 No due to her assistance in the Titan war, Zues made her a prisoner here...in this Storytelling of Caly, It's rumored that she doesn't know how to fully control her powers, so Zues uses it to his advantage with keeping her there. Epic's Caly is a Pick Me Ditzy dream girl, the ones you would see with posters on her walls and not knowing how to control her emotions or powers
@Ella-cd1qt It's not really confirmed by Jorge yet. Some theorize It's a curse from Zues. Some theorize she's just super young and very immature (the way her obsession for Ody showcases this), so she doesn't have a handle truly on her powers. Since the musical is still unfinished fully, it's hard to tell. Also, this Caly isn't the true Homer's Calypso, so a lot of traits from the source are unconfirmed
I LOOOVE the fact that you showed him not only making the raft but also her giving him supplies for the journey despite not wanting him to leave The expressions and little details are so on point
You're so good at expressions like you can tell Odysseus feels bad for her on some level! Like when he says I love you to Calypso he feels bad that he can't love her the way she wants but like that ending with all the vines trapping Calypso as she's crying
Where to start? I love so many things about this. Okay so, firstly, I love how you use Calypso’s magic to represent how she feels. I don’t think I’ve seen anyone else do that. She used magic to create the flowers in an attempt to make Ody see how she feels about her and then at the end her magic sprouts out to stop her from approaching him. Like she subconsciously wants him to go because she knows that what she’s done isn’t right and Ody has a family to get back to. Secondly, I really like how Ody’s eyes lit up when he heard that he gets to leave and how Calypso’s eyes go blank when he leaves. Thirdly, the way the colors fade and dull in the end is perfect. It shows how the fantasy, the paradise, Calypso created in her mind is stripped away by reality. Ody is leaving and that’s final. She’s alone again. Lastly, you do an excellent job with toeing the line of Ody fully resenting Calypso and him feeling slightly bad for her. I can genuinely believe that a part of him does love her in some way but he’d never stay willingly. He hates her version of love but he can see why she’s like this. Masterful animatic all around. Many kudos.
Beautiful! I think you have a great balance between Ody resenting her keeping him for so long and his feeling sorry for her. And as others have said - visualizing her being bound to the island is fantastic!
Wow……. This Not Sorry For Loving You animatic is almost more sad than the others I’ve seen. You can really tell what Calypso is feeling. I also love how throughout the entire video she’s trying to help Odysseus and show him that she loves him despite the fact that he’s getting ready to leave. Absolutely beautiful 🖤
Man, I LOVE that Calypso design! SHE’S SO PRETTY EVEN THOUGH SHE’S DONE BAD THINGS TO ODYSSEUS! Ody’s little expressions showing that he somewhat feels bad for her almost made me tear up! Now I’m interested in reading the myth since everyone pointed out the vines that keep Calypso trapped on the island. Beautiful animatic as always! Happy Holidays!
This is stunning I love how one as soon as odyssey finds out he can go free he packs up and two I love how at the end when ody sails off calypso tries to follow him but is bounded to the island it’s so cool since she’s cursed to stay on the island Now go take a break love you and merry Christmas ❤
Oh this is GORGEOUS. It hits the perfect balance for me. Her giving/shoving the basket at him is great. Beautiful expressions, and I love the details of him preparing to leave as time is passing.
This was absolutely amazing especially the ending pointing out the myth where she bound to the island. Your expressions on both of them chefs kiss ❤. Now take that break you truly deserve have a great hoilday season.
To add on to myself, the fans seem to have this obsession with making her abusive, but Jay has said she's more of a child who never really learned to grow up. Even singing about how she was cast away when she was young. I like it when they lean towards the 'canon' of Epic.
I hope you don’t mind, I’d like to add a little bit here, not to go against the spirit of what you’re saying but just to share some thoughts on the debate that I often see. To me, “she’s a horrible monster that did all of this on purpose and doesn’t really love Odysseus” and “she’s not an abuser because her love for him is innocent and she doesn’t mean to harm him” are BOTH false. I do believe that Calypso genuinely loves Odysseus. I also don’t think that makes the way she speaks to him and steps over his boundaries any less damaging. Putting aside whether or not she SA him in EPIC (which Jorge has said she doesn’t), I have been in a couple friendships where those people have spoken to me the way Calypso does to Ody. Any time I said something they didn’t like or disagreed with, they would pretend I hadn’t said that or disregard it while urging me to consider it from their perspective. They weren’t even talking to me, just talking AT me. They were also in other ways, good people who cared deeply and often did good things - they didn’t think they were harming me, but they were doing incredible damage to me. This is on top of Odysseus having no power to leave or other more equal/reciprocal relationships to help him feel like a real person and not an object. It doesn’t matter if we care for those people and the pain they’re in - if the way they interact with us can’t or won’t change, they’re poisonous to us. I do feel deeply for Calypso’s situation, and I do think there are fans that get really intense with the way they talk about her - I don’t want to discount that. I just also think that she is abusive, and that doesn’t make her deserve her fate. It’s horrible, and plenty “punishment” enough - not that I think punishment would help her or Odysseus. I wish she could have help and support and connections, from people who aren’t Odysseus. I hope it’s okay that I shared this, if you’d rather have your comments stand alone then I can delete it. Do let me know if you’d prefer that, I hope you’re having a good week!
@@JustKels It's totally fine that you shared, and respectfully so! It's a public comment, therefore open to everyone. And you did catch me mis-saying my point, my apologies. The fandom makes her physically abusive, which I think she isn't, but she most certainly is emotionally, I should've clarified that. I see her as a child who deep down knows something is wrong and can have some regret, but gets overshadowed by her selfish wants, even if it hurts someone. I'm not sorry for loving you displays that she'll let him go, but still try her best to justify her actions through gaslighting. I hope you have a good week too!
That makes a lot of sense! Yeah I can definitely see it that way, we’re all unable to look past our own needs and wants as children, and when you have no reason to practice moving away from that (and an island full of trauma), you’re pretty set up to fail. Particularly during this song, where he’s leaving anyway and it feels like there’s no hope for her to make things better in the future, it’s hard to imagine Calypso being able to admit (even to herself) how much she screwed up. What would be the point of that, just to hurt herself further once it’s too late? Ignoring the truth is such a strong protective impulse for her, and thus the reason becomes the blame. Ugh. UGH. It sucks so much 😩
I completely agree. I think it's entirely okay to recognize that what Calypso did is not okay while still acknowledging that her circumstances are incredibly difficult and sad.
The timelapse of Odysseus getting to work and making the raft, Calypso wishing him a safe journey by giving him supplies despite not wanting him to leave, accepting of their fates, the flowers growing to show her emotion to Odysseus and then wilting once he's gone, and the strings binding her onto the island representing the curse of her isolation. This is so amazing!
Yes ! Because a thing many animators and analizists of Epic seems to brush over is the fact that Odysseus, more than anyone, understand Calypso because they are, in a way, very alike. Both are able to go to ruthless lenghts in the name of love and hapiness. She kept him from leaving just like he sacrificed his crew to return to Penelope.
I have a mega compilation playlist on my channel of all of the songs from EPIC with multiple animatic variants for each one in song and favorite order. This is now my favorite animatic for "Not Sorry for Loving You" and will be placed at the top of that section because of the storytelling details including the offering of flowers, the raft building montage, the basket of food as a going away gift and most Especially for the plants at the end tying Calypso to the island. Just a chef's kiss ending! 😊
i like how (for lack of a better term) introspective the last bit feels. i've seen a lot of animatics where those last lines are just calypso having a temper tantrum. here, she's almost beating herself up, how could she have been so stupid, so immature, how do i deal with these feelings? and i think the only other place where i've seen this is lampyrcy's animatic. the vines i think make it better, as if she wants to go after him, but she knows that there's no stopping him. it's really cool on the song's part how ambiguous these lines are, but i very much prefer this interpretation, especially since jorge toned her down a LOT for epic (for context, she sexually abuses him, whereas here, she just kinda flirts with him without going much beyond that).
I love how the plant's are keeping Calypso prisoner despite having control over them, She's probably been held back before being forced to see everyone she has loved or love's leave her over and over again
This was amaseing. very well done. My fav. parts were the little montage of Ody building the raft, how expresive evrything was, and the idea of the flowers keeping her on the island, just very cool
THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR THE AMAZING ANIMATIC 🥺 I've been looking for one that doesn't make me feel like Calypso is being totally branded as a horrible and manipulative “person” in this song, even hinting at other types of abuse. I'm so tired of that so thank you so much for making this animatic,I love it!!!💕💕
This is AMAZING. The emotions are so on point, and I love that even though she doesn’t want him to leave she still helps him :'( also the way her OWN (I assume that's what it is?) magic stops her from going after him?? Bro, that’s so good and I'm analyzing the fuck out of that. It's such an interesting look into her psyche and the way you portreyed Calypso it makes me do laps around my room. I also love that you didn’t villainise Calypso here. Everyone can have their own interpertations of course, but there's really nothing in EPIC that confirms she did the same things as in the myths and I don't think Jorge would have made this song so symphatatic were that the case here. Anyway, I love your art style and this is genuinely probably my favorite Not Sorry For Loving You animatic.

Thank you for this take on the song! Calypso’s situation is complex and her time with Odysseus isn’t black and white. She’s a prisoner trapped on this island and most of that time is spent alone excepts for these specs of time when someone else washes along which could take 100s of not 1000s of years in between. She latches on to any real connection she can have and while this isn’t an excuse for forcing her love onto people, what else would an immortal do who’s trapped?
Amazing animation! I love the details on Calypso like the tattoo/vine on her calf. And the end showing how she is trapped on the island is so heartbreaking, but added to show that she really hoped she could follow/leave the island.
I love every interpretation of Calypso, really. Be it the lonely girl, or the other one. Regardless, I love that in this one, Calypso isn't really against with Ody leaving. She respects his decision, and admits to him that she feels very sad about it and vents her frustrations.
