  • Watch how a dog learns to pull a cart in one session. We filmed Amelia pulling a chain to learn to pull and pulling a wooden cart. We show how the harness fits and how the cart attaches to the dog.

    Thank you for explaining the brakes on the shafts & how to properly harness our K9 then connect cart to harness. It was frustrating trying to find any info on the the simple brake system & how to properly connect shafts, most places either had a diagram 9f 5he complete set up or tried to explain it without a visual. Thanks for keeping it straight & to the point.

    The thing is to balance the cart so that there is little or no weight on the harness from the shafts. In other words the weight is over the axle and not on the dog's back. With good tires, well inflated, the dogs can pull a lot. My dogs pull me in the sulky at an easy trot on level ground.

    • @DaphneLewis
      @DaphneLewis  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@shawnkathiravan1208 Dog drivers say the rule is 3 times their weight. Of course it depends on the fitness of the dog, the quality of the cart, wagon, sulky and the kind of pavement. Distance also. and level of ground.

      Wolf Link dogs know environmental contexts pretty well, plus if you're really worried you can teach them to only pull when wearing a specific harness or when a word is said

    Hello Waxprincess, The harness in this video was the harness by Chalo Sulky. In fact it was the wheelchair harness that Amelia wore. However other clips as in tire and chain pulling used x-back harnesses. The thee dogs pulling the tires in a line used the Chalo Sulky cart harness. Many manufacturers make harnesses for dogs to pull carts.

    • @DaphneLewis
      @DaphneLewis  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The harness is by Chalo Sulky. It is actually designed for a dorsal shaft but can be adapted by adding shaft loops on each side for the shafts to fit through.

      @@DaphneLewis so glad I found this video, you explain things clearly. I used to bike long distances, up to 3 month camping trips; but mobiliity issues sidelined me--no more biking: my legs give out, balance issues, etc. I can't carry a backpack due to severe back issues. So I am training a coonhound as service dog, he is over 2 yrs now, 93 pounds. I hope to train him to pull a light 2 wheel hiking cart (an external-frame backpack with an axle/12 or 16" bike wheels added, and removeable shafts so I can pick it up to carry over rough stretches, or onto trains, etc.). Would this harness be suitable, or should I use something like a "Siwash" style? I won't be driving him, but walking at his side

  • @DaphneLewis
    @DaphneLewis  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi Mary, Because he is distracted outside is why you train while the dog pulls a tire. You can correct him for leaving work mode during tire training. You can engrain the "On by" ("Go on by the distraction") command while the dog is on leash and harnessed. I use prong collars and now my dogs stay on the sidewalk and walk calmly by a yard where the fenced dogs run up and down the fence yelping at my dogs.

      Daphne Lewis I have a two year old male Rott I have been walking him since birth. I can simply say focus to keep him from paying attention to distractions. Obviously I’m interested in cart training hence I’m watching your video. Funny thing is I’ve taught Khan to walk beside me without pulling and after viewing your video I realize it’s his instincts which makes him want to be in front. Should be fun for both of us.

    German Shepherds have terrible hips - your dog has that show dog stance. You will break him down. What about a Bouvier or similar pulling breed.

    • @DaphneLewis
      @DaphneLewis  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have found that pulling a cart or sulky builds up the muscles around the hips. My personal german shepherd mix (not shown in this old video) has dysplasia and is a great sulky dog with strong muscles.

      This is an old video. Usually we have the dogs pull tires for a while (a few days)until the dog is comfortable with something dragging behind him. Then we might tie pvc tubes to his harness and let him pull those for a few days. So it is usually a gradual process.
