"things aren't scary, people are scared. the thing isn't scary, fear is just your reaction to a thing that exists." mind. blown. I suffer with anxiety, and that honestly blew my mind, I needed to hear that so badly. my anxiety is my response to a thing, and I can change it, then the thing won't make me panic anymore. I'm so glad I clicked on this video ❤️
Well having an anxiety disorder is a bit more complicated than just telling yourself not to panic. Sure, danger isn't synonymous with fear, it's a fight or flight response that has been encoded in your brain through multiple reasons. I don't think that fear is always connected to competence. Sometimes I get scared of things that I know that I have experienced before and can handle, but I get extremely anxious just out of habit.
Thank you so much for this video. This is someting i wanted an answer to and couldnt find it Now i know how to handle fear thanks to you. You made me realise how fear and dangerous is how we percieved it but it is false . This will be a great help to me. Best wishes Wishing you all you wish for yourself and your family
I loved this class! Honestly went back and rewatched RIGHT after I finished. So much in the class from leadership, to planning, to teamwork, courage, etc. My all time favorite masterclass.
As a coach and therapist, fear is one of those core areas I decided I'll major in. Because I've seen it stop thinking humans from doing what matters to them. Now with my channel, I do that, and I'm grateful. Imagine when I was starting my podcast I was afraid and scared myself. I followed a process to break through it. Awemazing video. I enjoyed his story.
WOW!!! To say that this has made me think is an understatement! The task isn't scary ... it's how I have perceived that task that makes it scary to me. It's how I react to the situation. The best antidote to fear is competence. No truer words have every been spoken. Thank you Col Hadfield!
As a retired military NCO with combat I agree with you when you say confidence and competence removes all fear. When getting on a plane late at night going to another country to stand up for the rights of others takes more then courage, it takes training, and a belief that God with us.
honestly, just commander astronaut chris hadfields masterclass is worth the cost subscribing to masterclass! he class is so awesome! plus not only does he give ~7hrs of awesomeness, but then you get access to others like neil degrasse tyson, james cameron, ru paul, ron howard, … HIGHLY RECOMMEND! 🖤🌏🧑🏼🚀🚀🛰️✨
So glad someone had yhe idea to upload this video, it is a good useful interview. And now I know why I feel consistently afraid: competence. I will practice the "things ain't scary, people are scared" perspective. Such a nice person.
Now this is a motivetional speaker, a guy who has actually been there, put himself out there (in freaking space, on a space walk, literally) a guy who actually experianced life. When he speaks, he knows what he's talking about.
Honestly, 36 people have disliked this video?? Who the fuck in their right mind would dislike this? Chris is such an inspirational man, literally everything he says is so clear and just makes sense and just goes. I needed to hear this years ago... I suffer from social anxiety and it’s a total pain in the arse !! Lol 😔
People should see this in these times with the corona virus Having fear is ok, but we must tackle with reason and intelligence the problem or else it makes the problem worse
"The only place that fear can exist is in our thoughts of the future. It is a product of our imagination, causing us to fear things that do not at present and may not ever exist. Do not misunderstand me, danger is very real but fear is a choice.” Thank you, Will Smith.

Noted and listened to everything, this was the inspiration I needed👏🏾 "Things aren't scary, people are scared, it's whether you choose to be scared"
That quote about Fear speaks words in it self. THATS POWERFUL
So far, the best words on youtube which in reality make sense. Unlike those unrealistic motivations.

Chris Hadfield is such an inspiring individual! 👍
Things aren't scary,a thing is just a thing. People are scared , we just have to change our reactions.... great word.
This is exactly what I learned skating. If you're afraid, it means you have to hit it until you got so familiar you can play with it.
People should see this in these times with the corona virus
Having fear is ok, but we must tackle with reason and intelligence the problem or else it makes the problem worse
Agreed 100%. Too many people tend to react to this situation with fear and hysteria instead of facts and knowledge.
Can this guy be more inspiring 🤯 . I'm bindge watching everything on youtube that he's in.
This is what high-quality content looks like. An expert informing people.
That was Fantastic. Very Inspirational.

Have it writ upon my wall: "The best antidote for fear is competence."
Things or situations can be frightening, scary, whatever. Most people learn to do very high risk stuff by controlling their thoughts.
Who else tried crossing their fingers like he did at 4:42?
