I absolutely agree with you. I currently own a 2014 Q5. I've owned it since new and after 8yrs. the honeymoon still isn't over. I love this car. It still looks and drives like the day I drove it off the dealership lot.
I have always admired this vehicle for it's understated nature...have loved these from the begining over most AMG S-Class options. It has been a long time since a review for it has been out. Thanks Matt!

The new BMW 7 series with its peak hideousness is a total gift to Audi. Odd how Audi is very undecided on the HVAC controls with some newer cars still having the touch screen and some older cars switching back to buttons.
The new 7 Series I think looks good for being different, but it doesn't look great. The new grill isn't as hideous this time around with how they integrated it. I'm curious what the price difference will be on the new M-Sport 7 Series versus this car.
@@diz_-4167 Come on, it has Hyundai Santa Fe/Jeep Cherokee headlights and those terrible BMW gauges. The new 760i will make the same power as the S8 and will start at 115k which makes the attractive S8 a hell of a better proposition. The i7 starts at 120k at which point you are better off with the Taycan 4S or e-Tron GT unless you need the huge back seats.
@@Ficon I’m giving them too much credit but their design isn’t changing soon so we have to live with it. I only had time to see the pictures of it at work today and didn’t have time to read all of the articles. S8 for sure in this case since you posted the 7 Series stats. I guess I’m just a sucker since I drove a 2018 740il as a rental for a few weeks on vacation a bit ago. The B58 was much stronger than advertised for the car for how comfortable and heavy it was. Having owned a built supercharged Elise, daily driving built Evos, and having my commuter bike be a 2020 ZX-6R… I tend to gloat and mull over anything I can get in and drive without breaking my spine. To this day I say if I ever hit the powerball this is the car I would buy first. Have worked at a collision shop that specializes in Audi’s for 20 years and each variation of the S8 impresses me beyond belief
The a8 line gets looked over often bc it doesn’t have the flashy cool features/interior of the S class and for some that’s what they want. But the s8 specifically is an absolute gem, with great dynamics and comfort it’s a vehicle worth looking at. Plus it’s understated nature helps it fly under the radar which is what some want.
There are two types of 8 versions... And I don't mean A8 or S8... Each model has its executive packages that pretty much make it a whole different trim altogether. This is a single driver package. The luxury executive chauffeur package has all the flashy things you're thinking of in the BMW 7 series and Merc S class.
Great car and video. I loved my 2013 Audi S8. I bought it as a low mileage CPO for less than half its original MSRP. I think the original sticker was $130k and i got it for high $40’s with 19k miles. Audi CPO is only on year so i put 20-30k miles on it the first year and it was perfect. Rear tires lasted 10k miles, fronts 20k miles. The second year I owned it, it was out of warranty and I spent thousands fixing everything so I eventually had to sell it. I really miss going up and down the NJ Turnpike, 2 hours in and feeling refreshed with the massage seats. Great highway car
I’ve been very happy with my previous generation S7 as a daily. Quick, comfortable, powerful, sounds good, launches hard, and with the sport diff & adaptive air suspension it feels much smaller and more responsive on canyon roads than you’d expect. Coupled with a Sportback design, it is very practical too.
This one is actually my personal watch, that I got as a gift from my dad in 2008 when I left NY to move to LA to start The Smoking Tire. It's a lovely thing with lots of patina from years of working out in the desert when it was my only watch. Thanks for noticing though! This month's loaner from bobs is WILD solid gold yachtmaster with a tahitian black pearl dial.
Matt, excellent review as always. I was honestly surprised VAG still makes the S8 but glad to see it. I know that you have retired the "One Take" series but it would be cool to see some type of spin-off where viewers/dealers bring you their low mileage (less than 50K) modern classics for a thorough once over. Granted, the tires were manufactured in the last three years!
Absolute stealth missile. This car's basically wifey material. She might not seem as flashy as the competition but the things she'll be able to do for you 🥵😍
Considering the new 7 series that just got announced, and the currant S Class that imo looks a bit too much like a fat E Class (kinda lost some of the long sleek lines of the outgoing model). I think the A8/S8 may be the second prettiest in the segment next to the volvo S90. I kinda wonder what a wagon version would look like.
I agree, BMW's design team needs to layoff the crackpipe, and Mercedes dulling the lines of the S class was a terrible move, the new one is hideous, and still somehow 100x better looking than an EQS.
Yeah G90 would get 3rd place after the Audi, only thing I'm not a fan of on the G90 is the light-bar for tail lights, I think since the front is so distinct with the split headlight design, it's a shame they didn't replicate it in the rear. That's really a small nitpick though.
The latest Audi interiors feel like they trickle-up to the A8, from the A6. I sat in an A6, with Valcona leather, and it was nicest thing anyone would ever need. I don’t see a huge case here for the S8 if you don’t need the long wheel base, crazy suspension tech, carbon fiber, or v8.
V8 is the main reason to step up imo. If you can afford an S8 it’s an easy choice over the S6. If you can’t though, the S6 is still awesome. Audi V6s just don’t feel the same as the V8. An S6 with a V8 would be the perfect middle ground.
@dsher503 like the previous gen S6 which had the 4.0L TT engine. I used to have one of these before trading up to the previous generation S8 (2015). Not 100% sold on the new S8 though. The grill doesn't feel ad integrated as before (unless black pack is optioned) and it just looks as little "fat" as compared to my S8. I still prefer analogue dials over touch (fingerprints) screens.
I had a loaner 2020 S8 last year for 3 weeks and man, that thing could boogie! For as large as it was, it did not drive like a barge. And I drive into Malibu every day for work so I took it in some familiar canyons and it floated with ease. I only wish I could afford one. Hoping VW emissions lab needs my GTI again for testing :)
One day I was joking to my little children that I will sell our S8 V10 and they became very sad, went to their rooms and came back with the piggybank money to give me not to do that - '' Dad, don't give away our Batmobil'' hehe
I recently gave the new Dodge Challenger/Charger Jailbreak some pretty heavy criticism on a car enthusiast page, because essentially it’s a $120k car that still uses a $20k rental car quality interior. For a vehicle to be $120k, a lot of thought should also be included in the interior, which is where you spend your time 100% of the time when driving. Well, some of that vehicles fanboys didn’t like what I had to say. Their main argument was that asking for a nice interior was a silly thing to gripe about when you have over 800hp. Well, I think it’s a legitimate thing to gripe about, and the Audi A8 is proof of that. Here the Audi A8 lies…a $120k car, with a much much MUCH nicer interior and build quality throughout the entire vehicle, and it will be as fast, or faster, than the Dodge Challenger/Charger Jailbreak. We know where the $120k is going with the Audi. Where is the $120k going with the Dodge? Besides the engine, it looks like a cheap Dodge, and the interior feels like a cheap Dodge.
The chase scenes from the Transporter movies aren't too bad either though not as good/iconic as in Ronin. Though I can't remember now if they used a BMW in the first movie then Audis in the 2 sequels..?
