From being the main villain of the final arc in Dragon ball to helping Goku fight Raditz and ending up as Gohan's Mentor figure, Piccolo's development as one of the Main Z Fighters is one of the best aspects we get to see in DBZ. We’d see Piccolo befriend Gohan and this allows him to become almost human in his own way, leading to him giving his life to save Gohan. Then we see bro go to Namek, his actual home planet and discovers that he’s not just some demon but rather comes from a race of aliens, also known as the Namekians. After training with King Kai even being sent to his home world during the climax of the arc, we’d see him find another namekian who not only fought Frieza but pretty much dedicated his existence to protecting someone. Nail would recognize and acknowledge Piccolo's strength, saying how the two together could avenge the namekian race, but Piccolo doesn't really WANT to do this as he has his own personal reasons for wanting to fight Frieza. Despite embracing and becoming one with his heritage so to speak, he still retains his own goals of being a fighter, and wanting to protect the ones HE personally cares about. Which is what makes Piccolo arriving on Namek and pressing 2nd form Frieza all the more satisfying, because not only is Frieza the one dude whos been a step ahead of everyone the entire time finally getting caught lacking, but it's from one of the last remaining warriors of the race he nearly wiped out completely. We’d see Piccolo stalling time for the spirit bomb along with being the first person that Frieza shot, showing that he for sure got under his skin to some degree. Even if Frieza doesn't want to admit it, a low life namekian did nearly kill him and was a big help in almost dying again. Piccolo would be the first one to hear about the androids, leading into him telling the group to lock in before then training with Goku and Gohan for 3 years After this we’d see him discover Cell who's a bio android who has the DNA of everyone that PIccolo knows. I do think for his character its really cool that this new whole version of himself is now fighting someone whos more so similar to how he wouldve been in the past, but what i dislike is the fact that fucking Piccolo deliberately lets his energy get stolen, so Cell can give exposition and escape just barely. And for some reason after this point, he just feels like he isn't really useful anymore? Piccolo in my opinion could have used that extra day to close the gap, as we do even see him despite feeling useless do very well against the Cell JRs. I personally think he did as well as Vegeta and Trunks given the fact he had to help the weaker Z Fighters out against their opponents. And Piccolo as well is the one who takes the charge in aiding Gohan against Cell, as he never wanted him to be in this position in the first place. Although Goku in general was in the right for letting Gohan go super saiyan 2, Piccolo is not at all wrong for saying what he did, and he clearly has a better understanding of Gohan than his father since that's his first friend, and they've unironically spent a lot of their years as friends. Gohan IS the one who wanted to help PIccolo even when his father told him not to, so it is clear that they both are very close and don't want one another getting hurt. Piccolo literally saw his ex mortal enemy put his best friend as the last hope of the universe. Honestly after the Cell saga it really does seem like there isn't much for Piccolo to do, but there's still one more arc + a whole other series to go through so I hope it's good stuff. Right? Piccolo in the beginning of the Buu Arc admits inferiority to Shin, which conceptually sounds like fire and was a great way to introduce the kais, until you find out they're all bitchmade, which makes Piccolo look even worse. He then gets spat on by Dabura only to do nothing until Buu kills him, which then he and Vegeta have a pretty great one on one interaction that's one of the only ones they ever really get, then right after Piccolo immediately shits himself when Buu regenerates and his first instinct is to run and get Goten & Trunks. Mind you this is BEFORE the fusion dance is mentioned, so he believes that yes, Trunks and Goten, the fucker who can barely fly, has a better chance at beating Buu then himself. Mind you, PICCOLO HAD 7 FULL YEARS TO TRAIN and could have used an extra day in the chamber, only to be now one of the weaker fighters. For fucks sake even Tien had a better feat than anything Piccolo did the entire arc and thats not even exaggerating it. HE NEGGED A BLAST FROM A BUU WHO ABSORBED PICCOLO. And now we enter Super , aka the downfall of my glorious king.

Piccolo, the character who in the SAME ARC was CONFIRMED to have SUPER HEARING, got snuck up on twice
Piccolo, the Guy with stretchy arms, got knocked out of the ring. Meanwhile, Vegeta grabbed onto the side of the ring and pulled himself back in.
That's called plot , krillin also returned to the stage by using wi wave . All could do that even tien could use his clone like Naruto and returned to the stage @@LordProteus
Piccolo, the character who can turn himself giant, literally forgot he could do that. He's a true testament to Toriyama's forgetfulness. RIP

Could've had him just train on Beerus' planet. Whis did recognize the partial god inside him so that could've been plenty reason. Could justify the forms too as Piccolo tapping into god ki in different means than the Saiyans.

GT was a s*itshow! I would have enjoyed watching Piccolo fighting along with Goku and Vegeta against the 7 evil dragons. Which would have been mandatory since Kami being the one who created those faulty dragonballs.
I'm a huge GT fan (GT >>>>>> Super), but yeah, they fucked up not using him.
He's the only character to actually not be mishandled in Super.

Vegeta kinda the reason Piccolo gets sidelined. To me Picc and Veggie are very similar in character and arc, Piccolo gets his coat of paint change quickly and after Cell introduction Picc fell outta grace cuz he wasn't a Saiyan.
That's a toriama issue. All they had to do was create villans for each of the main cast fight that way they all get a chance to shine. Instead we get one major Baddy assigned to goku .

Same thing I have been thinking, dude was in the same space as Vegeta and got shunted over to the grumpy mentor role after Roshi fell of too much and became mostly horny grandpa comedic relief and occasional wise sage and left the martial art teacher position open. Even wise sage was taken by others.
Funny, seems like most characters gets replaced in their main role sooner or later.

Fr piccolo's prime was in og and dbz dragon ball he was one of the only ones who could keep up with the sayians in the early sagas

As a Tenshinhan and Gohan fan, I hear you. Both Piccolo and Tenshinhan arguably train at least as hard and often as Goku and Vegita, but they're never allowed to catch up. Hell, one thing that annoyed me was that the Kaioken returns, but rather than a way for the non-Sayians to potentially close the gap, it's just suddenly a way for Goku to get stronger.
Honestly, even if you have to say that Goku, Gohan and Vegita are the absolute strongest / most powerful heroes in Dragon Ball, Piccolo could still be competitive by just being a tier below them but making up for the raw power difference by having his various unique Namekian abilities, fighting smarter / with more skill and having a more versatile array of techniques. Heck, give him his own Namekian themed power up akin to the Kaioken. But in DBZ skill and technique doesn't really count for much anymore, it's all about who has the most raw power and rarely little else.
If Dragon Ball was more like, say, the Avengers or the Justice League, then all of the heroes would have different pros and cons, an ability to contribute, different things they could bring to the table. But that was never really the goal after a certain point.
Always loved how krillin would get underestimated but come in clutch with the disc man! That thing was deadly. And tien with the clones! And piccolo can regen limbs! And let's not forget Yamcha Yamcha-ing mofos all over the screen!
Pretty sure Chaiotzu has the worst death. Blowing himself up to help win a desperate struggle, and the bad guy isn’t even scratched😂

i will say one small thing in his defense during Buu, the fact that Buu transformers into his Piccolo-form after Gotenks defuses does mean he is stronger than the saiyan brats, a minor win but as a Piccolo fan i have to cling to what little i have.
Unfortunately you need to count on the Goten and Trunks being base as well after defusing so it can't be relied fully
I always thought he was a standout member of every arc he was involved in until the Buu saga. Since then, he’s just been… there. That’s more than can be said for Goten and Trunks, but still a huge waste of his character.
This was a huge problem with the buu saga. Since there was only 1 major antagonist stronger than anyone else and all the side villains just died early. There was pontential in super like maybe him training with the supreme kai and gaining a new form via the namekian book of legends.
@@AhmedHussain-ju6xd I don’t even necessarily think he needed a new form, but just a power increase. He’s fused with Kami, and that should probably put him on the path to learn God Ki. If he trained under the Kais, that should be sufficient to at least give him trace amounts of it. Orange Piccolo (wish power up aside) is pretty damn cool, though.

Picolo hasn’t peaked, he and gta barber got surprised in the dapup tournament of power but he came back
Piccolo not imperfect Cell makes, Kami has been observing imperfect Cell but never got a chance to actually know what Cell was, and on top of that Cell had all the ki signatures of the Z fighters who just spent the entire 3 preparing for the androids, it only makes sense that he’d curious about an unexpected turn of events. He paid the price for his curiosity tho
yh piccolo paid the price but he saved the timeline by finding out about present cell since he would be be completed at the time of late dbs with DNA of everyone from the Buu arc to just before the tornament of power.

To answer the question as to why Piccolo didn’t just kill Imperfect Cell from the start, remember that the timeline has already been shown to be drastically different from what Trunks described. There were four androids instead of two, the androids were way stronger than the alternative future versions, and there was not even a mention of Cell. For all Piccolo knew, this Cell could have just been one scout of a whole unknown secret army. He needed as much info as possible so the others would know exactly what they were dealing with and not get blindsided again. If Piccolo hadn’t gotten exposition from Cell, they never would have known of the Cell embryo in Gero’s lab and then have to deal with that years later

But it's still dumb how Piccolo stood there after he got the info. With Gero he was interrupted by Trunks and later on Bulma was used as a distraction. With Cell he gets cocky and let his guard down.
@@veryangryboi4128 Piccolo and Cell were interrupted by Trunks and Krillin, and then Cell does a solar flare to escape. It wasn't about cockiness or letting a guard down. He was literally blinded and then was shocked that Cell knew how to hide his ki.
Also, learning about Cell led to finding blueprints for the androids, allowing Bulma to make the shut-off switch and repairs for 16 - which in turned was instrumental in helping Gohan unlock his SSJ2 power.

Piccolo could have so many cool arcs like discovering who he really was before his split with Kami, or him training a new namekian that visits earth, or journey down a forbidden demon path that ancient namekians once walked.
He's my favourite character and he is criminally underused.
I love Piccolo he’s lowkey my role model. HOWEVER Saiyans are cooler than Namekians and that’ll never change. And I’m beginning to think of a theory as to why Orange piccolo is a thing for Piccolo before his department to Other World.

Piccolo no matter he is strong or weak, he always is badass and he never give up. Vegeta when he was weak few times gave up.
The reason for not entering the room for a 2nd time is that even though he got a lot stronger he still was no much for Cell to which even Goku agreed on. Plus Goku & Gohan both refused to enter a 2nd time so that might also be a reason. As for letting Gero and Cell escape, it's not like he did it on purpose, he was distracted by Trunks/Bulma/Krillin on both occasions. Knowing Cell's identity was crucial. He was an enemy from the future after all. Funny how Garlic Jr Saga , a filler saga that is disliked by many (not me) treated Piccolo much better than Buu Saga/GT/Super combined.
True, that arc was cool I liked how Piccolo faked being possessed, that was something you just don't see in the main arcs. Nowadays it does kind of feel like the forerunner to the last movie. It's always great seeing the other characters get some love, and a new side character was introduced, which I didn't even mind all that much. The silly antics early on were great too.
His death in Super was so pointless, it literally got cut out from the movie. Piccolo never died in Resurrection F (the movie).
Of the DBZ cast: Gryffindor - Future Trunks and Yamchs, for Ravenclaw - Goham,, and Piccolo: for Hufflepuff: Goku and Krillen. For Slytherin: Vegeta and Tien

I love the "even Tien" comment, because it kinda shows the problem with the characters in Dragon Ball Z and onward even more clearly.
In short, there is no reason why Krilin is considered stronger than Tien. Tien should by all means be the strongest human by far.
He was acknowledged in OG Dragon Ball to not only be insanely talented, but also being a fighting genius in his own right.
And his only goal was to become a better martial artist, he did nothing but train almost his entire life.
Krilin on the other hand especially in super neglected training entirely to the point where he is injured by bullets, something Goku in the first episode of OG Dragon Ball was able to shake off with only slight discomfort. And no, this isn't the same as with trying to assassinate Goku Black while his guard wasn't up. Krilin was a police officer trying to actively defuse a situation, his guard was 100% up.
Tien should be tiers above all other human characters at this point by logic, including Krilin and Roshi. There is no reason why he shouldn't be.
Yet he is treated like a weakling in comparison.
Piccolo and Tien got almost the same treatment. They were interesting as villains, but were not allowed to outshine the main cast in any way once their character arcs were over and they became full allies.
The only reason Piccolo even did as well as he did was because Toriyama actually liked him.

I've always liked the growth that his mergers didn't make him the strongest fighter, they made him the wisest teacher. He took over for Kami as the mentor to all future warriors and the moral compass and support that Vegeta and Goku needed to reach their full potential.
That moment with Vegeta where he informs the latter what awaits was absolutely peak.
Also him butchering Babidi was another of my fav moments.
It felt like the Android/Cell sagas were the good guys trying to flex their new found power ups.

Wild thing is, when writers say a guy is their "favorite", it can often mean the most fun to write for (not necessarily the strongest or coolest) so Piccolo getting the short stick plotwise burns a little worse for me.
Daima has planted some cool seeds for piccolos story now. With Nimacians being of the demon realm.

If Piccolo didn't press future Cell for info, there would've been another Cell on their hands as he was still growing in Gero's lab.
This info also led to Trunks and Krillin find the blueprints for the androids, allowing Bulma to create the shutoff switch and repair 16.
While the shut-off switch didn't end up being used, 16 was still invaluable in helping taking down Cell. All thanks to Piccolo pressing future Cell for info.

Some of the issues with Piccolo and other side characters less relevant than him would be solved if they each had been unable to be revived after the 1st time they died, or if they had been used a potara fusion partners and become part of a main character, adding their own traits to that character. Imagine Chiaoten coming to save the day vs Cell after seeing Kamicolo or Yamchillin intervening at some point to save a main character. Gotenks becoming a defintive fusion instead of a temporary one making the children relevant, Vegeto staying one to conclude the Buu saga and Chichi and Bulma fusing together to avoid sharing a husband a discovering how useful ki can be in engineering and revolutionizing tech once more by inventing machines (not just androids, any machine) that work off of ki as the main energy source, their husband becoming a major source of bio energy.
I feel like you may have misunderstood the part of the story where Guardian infused Piccolo baiting Cell instead of trying to killing Cell was actually a smart move

@@Tylearned it’s simple, actually. Namekian merging is both mental and physical, and the person who initiates the merger is the one in control. That being said, when Kame decided to merge with Piccolo, his knowledge of the situation isn’t fully realized. Kame can sense positive and negative energy from his lookout, but that’s about the extent of it. Kame can’t sense personality or intentions. Cell is also made up of several different genetics, which also makes it even harder for Kame to tell what the true depth of the situation is. The fact that Kame made the decision to let Piccolo merge was purely based on his instinct to do good and nothing more. When Piccolo and Kame do merge, Piccolo is still in control. The only thing left of Kame is Kame’s knowledge and strength, but Kame was just as in the dark about the situation as Piccolo was. When Guardian Piccolo faces off against Imperfect Cell for the first time, Cell is an unpredictable factor. Piccolo doesn’t just rush into a fight blind, though. Piccolo baits Cell on purpose in order to learn more about Cell and to try to figure out what Cell’s true capabilities are

I was so excited to see Piccolo finally return to form after being held for so long, and the Universe 6 competition was the time for my boy to shine. And it’s against a member of Frieza’s race??? What a symbolic victory this will be! *BUT NO!* Because Piccolo immediately says man this guy is tough I can really only beat him by using one freaking move and it’s the strongest move I have. And he loses still. But it’s cool because Frost cheated and beat him through illegal methods. Hell yeah, now he can get his getba-he forfeits. He gives up his second chance at the fight so that Vegeta can beat him. Man, if they screw over Piccolorange too???

I think the dumbest moment of piccolo was during the cell saga when Goku was almost killed by 19 because of the heart virus,and he could've perfectly kicked Gero's ass back then when he was in the way;what he did instead was getting hit by Gero so he could take them by surprise, lol. Idk how things would've turned out had Vegeta not showed up.
The anime version of Battle of Gods Piccolo doesnt get as disrespected than the movie.
Seeing it laid out like this, Piccolo truly does get shafted in so many ways. It's honestly amazing how despite all that he is still considered such a GOATed character (and still one of my faves along with Krillen and Future Trunks). He really is just used to take the hits to build up the opponents for Gohan or the other Saiyans. He deserves his own arc at this point and I hope they help flesh him out more and allow his own tactical approach to fighting stand out. Got that copium hard rn but bro deserves more! Let him lead the background Z-fighters to do something meaningful as a team!

I cannot fully fault Piccolo for not killing Cell immediately after first meeting him. I know the out of universe reason Piccolo asked who Cell is was that it allowed Toriyama to explain Cell’s backstory/origin. A good in-universe reason Piccolo would ask questions instead of outright kill Cell is just Piccolo’s character. Piccolo was seen as the smarts/tactical fighter. Naturally an inquisitive person would want any info after all knowledge is power, but sometimes inquisitive people cannot help but ask questions like it’s a reflex for them. If I was Piccolo and saw Cell drink people, I would also say “WTF! Who are you?!” and want answers too. The tldr is that I get why Piccolo did not kill Cell when he logically should have. Cell had the dominant/advantageous position of being an unknown factor.

I keep seeing more and more people talk about how much they love piccolo and how they hate how he’s been done dirty. I’m hoping the writers will see that and start giving the character more love, especially with the creator sadly passing away. Why not honor him by giving his favorite character more love?
With context of the editors changing the villain in the android/cell saga. It kinda makes sense why it turned out like this.

Sad part about the 2 universe 6 namekians is they absorbed everyone on namek to try and protect their universe only for it to be in vain and be brought back by another universes and now theyre just the last 2 namekians in universe 6

The problem was establishing that there's nothing stronger than Saiyans and their countless transformations. Piccolo stuck in that awkward spot where he's stronger than humans but weaker than Saiyans.
Super Hero had to make up transformations to give Piccolo the edge.

The Cell Saga was the peak of the DragonBall Anime. After that the Anime lost its tension.
It has literally never made sense to me for Piccolo to always be the punching bag. He’s well established as the smartest Z Fighter, he trains the most easily, and his race makes him innately the strongest non Saiyan. Yet he basically only serves as a mid punching bag in every single arc now.

The thing that annoyed me about Super was before the 6/7 fight (I believe) where Goku and Vegeta wanted Piccolo to join them and he gave some lame excuse that he'll never be able to keep up with Saiyans, and we are just left sitting there like "no duh dude you don't train you don't keep up." And I think before his fight with Frost he said some lame defeatist stuff. Dragon ball became so much about the Saiyans it no longer became fun to watch.
