Piccolo’s character development is amazing. From him being born simply out of his father’s/reincarnation’s hatred for Goku, to befriending Goku later, and also befriending and training his former enemy’s son. The Namek Arc is my personal favourite.
I feel like there hasn’t been much recent “amazing development” for his character. I mean considering the complex character he once was, now he’s just been seemingly reserved as a grandfather/babysitter which is very lame.
Like it was cool in the Tournament of Power when he had that moment with the other namekians, I feel like they should’ve further delved into that aspect of his character.

Dragon Ball is a product now, so we won’t ever see the unique story telling/characters it used to have. Only shadows of it.

Piccolo's development from evil villain to heroic warrior is an aspect that really endear him to a lot of people. Him sacrificing himself to protect Gohan is one of the best scenes in the entire series.

I watched some DB yesterday and my son was able to recognize Goku, Krillin and Yamcha. I played an episode of Z as well and he recognized Piccolo. I don’t believe I’ve ever watched the shows with him. I began showing him great shows and movies of my generation. He loves it all.

@John Johnson stop lying no he didn’t he literally revealed again that piccolo was his favorite character in the bio he did of him and Gohan during the lead up to the movie.
Seeing as how Toriyama keeps forgetting stuff/changing his mind, I wouldn't be so sure. I seem to recall in one of his many earlier interviews when he said that Goku was his favorite character.

Never forget Piccolo was the one who defeated Raditz(the first villain of DBZ) AND GOKU at the same time.
I think most newer fans forget just how young piccolo really is. His race is long lived. To that standard he is not even a teenager by saying age gaps. He will be around for hundreds of not over a thousand years. He may even be the elder Guru one day.
I don’t think he can be an elder. If you look at namekiens saga and the super hero movie. They mention several times that there are different types of namakiens. Maybe later on they do an ass pull or change canon but piccolo is a warrior namekien and elder types are like guru and dende
@@jasperpettis3773 yeah now that you mention it I remember that he ce.from the dragon clan? They had two clans. But we probably agree that piccolo is still very young. That may play into why he is so concerned for Goku's kids and possibly in the future Vegeta's. He's gonna be around a hot minute.
@@jasperpettis3773 Indeed, there are two types of Namekians. Both of them live really long, though. Remember how both Kami and Piccolo have to be alive for the Dragon Balls to work? Kami is from the Dragon clan, Piccolo is from the Warrior clan. Both of them lived for 300+ years from the time where Roshi was young up until the start of Dragon Ball proper. (King) Piccolo was sealed inside the rice cooker but it doesn't delay/stop aging or anything -- King Piccolo was young when he was sealed initially and by the time he came out, he was old and wrinkly just like Kami.
So our Piccolo *will* be living for hundreds of years as well.
One of the reasons I thought the Garlic Jr. movie had such great promise was that its story connected Garlic Jr. to Kami and the events that led to the son of Katas becoming Kami. I still think the movie should have dealt more heavily with that subject.

Piccolo has the best character development in Anime. He went from being the biggest villain in dragon ball to being Gohan’s friend to becoming a part of Goku’s family and caring about them but at the same time still a badass.

We did
Piccolo's involvement in GT was not only an insult to his character, but the development of his character across Dragonball and DBZ actually creates arguably the single largest plothole for GT and actually negates the existence of that sequel series entirely.
According to GT, the Black Star Dragonballs were created by the child of Katatsu before he split his good and evil into Kami and Demon King Piccolo, so the life link to those balls would have been severed after the split and rendered inert, similar to how the titular Dragonballs went inert once Kami died after Piccolo sacrificed himself for Gohan, but more importantly when they deactivated by Piccolo and Kami refusing in the Cell Saga. That means that Dragonballs can only exist if their creator's ki signature can be recognized as it was the moment the balls were created, which is why Kami fusing with Piccolo disabled the Dragonballs despite the fact that he wasn't technically dead.
The titular Dragonballs were made specifically by Kami after Demon King Piccolo was no longer a part of his own individual life force, so despite having a shared soul the Dragonballs only recognized Kami as their creator and bound their existence to only him, so once Piccolo and Kami fused the mixture of Kami's ki and Piccolo's ki within the same physical body no longer matched the distinct ki of Shenlong's creator and so ceased to exist at that point despite Kami still being alive. It wasn't until Dende reconnected the statue of Shenlong with his own essence that it again recognized an acceptable creator's ki and reactivated the balls with a new life link.
This discrepancy of exactly how an Eternal Dragon recognizes its creator and how it does or doesn't recognize their presence is an unwittingly huge indicator of Piccolo as an independent Namekian. He was birthed as the reincarnation of pure evil, but over his own individual life and the unique experiences he had and the choices he made that were completely independent of the will of Demon King Piccolo he created his own identity that was no longer bound to the life and nature of his original design, to the point that even King Yenma could not judge his soul the same way as he likely judged the Demon King after his passing. That means that by the time Piccolo sacrificed himself for Gohan he was no longer the reincarnation of Demon King Piccolo in spirit so could no longer replicate an identical ki signature to his predecessor. Therefore, when Piccolo and Kami fused the resultant new Namekian would not resemble the child of Katatsu by life essence despite being composed of the same source components. Because of that, the Black Star Dragonballs should not recognize Piccolo as their creator and should've stayed inert since Dende would have no reason to manually life link them to himself either.
So very long story short, the Black Star Dragonballs should never exist as functional orbs at any point in the present story of Dragonball so Pilaf can never make a wish on them and start the GT series. Sorry SSJ4 fans.

Goku would be an adult fighting baby vegeta and would still lose, thus having a reason to seek greater power quickly.

That’s pure headcanon to say that since piccolo reformed himself that he’s no longer The embodiment of Demon king piccolo. That’s him whole body and soul. You can’t get away from your essence. He reformed himself in the mind but he’s still The Essence of King piccolo. As a of Fact, the ONLY reason they needed dende was because After Piccolo and Kami merged, he would no longer be pure hearted to the core. They had no guardian. So that alone debunks your claim the black star balls should remain inactive. Because he’s back how he was in the beginning. Now what DOESNT make sense is those out of nowhere new balls introduced in DBS that wasn’t even created by a Namekian.
He brings a certain grittyness and reality to the series especially when he gets pissed at Gohan for slacking off. Its so funny though when somebody does something embarassing and Piccolo just grunts and puts up with it when he wants to beat their ass.

When Piccolo fought Goku at the Tournament, it was really a future custody battle for Gohan.
Technicaly piccolo can have child anytime he wants.
Through tamburine was realy ugly "namekian".
Hands down my favorite character in the entire series.
Piccolo Jr. in a way also had a Superman story. Being sent away as his planet/father was being destroyed.
Piccolo was just like Vegeta. Both at first wanted to destroy the world but became friendly rivals of Goku.
Well, technically Piccolo never wanted to "destroy" the world per se. He just wanted to be its ruler, a ruler who, nevertheless, would have destroyed the world a slice at a time. Vegeta on the other hand just wanted to destroy the Earth's inhabitants and sell it off.
The Funimation dub line read of when he fuses with nail is the cringiest but funniest line that piccolo ever says.

Piccolo has never met the Ginyu Force.
And Goku never met Zarbon and Dodoria nor any Namekian apart from Piccolo when he was on Namek. It's funny because when he goes to new Namek in search of a new Kami during the Cell arc, he is surprised to see "so many Piccolos". 😊

Since Piccolo killed Shenlong. I think it's safe to say OG73 could use copy abilities on wish granting dragon because it's ability could copy the angels as Moro did.
It's always been my headcannon that Piccolo started to change cuz he ultimately did get his revenge on Goku by slaying him with Raditz.
Cain and Abel weren't twins.
Arguably Vegeta's version of the villain->hero arc is better but Piccolo is a pretty interesting character and someone who is smart in a way the Saiyans are not. Honestly it makes more sense to explore the spiritual aspects of Dragon Ball with Piccolo and the sci-fi aspects with the Saiyans. Go Big Green! Poor guy has to deal with all sorts of Saiyan nonsense.

To me the first hint of Piccolo's good side was his introduction before the tournament in Dragonball. How is the most evil and final villain introduced to the audience? A storm, a lightning bolt hits some building, ruble falls on a woman with her child about to crush them, suddenly it explodes into tiny peaces, and guess who blasted it? None other than Piccolo. Such a menace, damn.

He's probably the best db character,but he has no hype because he is not a sayan
Piccolo had softened up quite a bit after a year training Gohan but I think he saw he was able to work as a team with the other fighters. His sacrifice made him kinda good and then fusing with Nail tipped the scale. In the anime he was approached by Kami once and inquired about the idea of taking over the position of guardian, which Piccolo refused, but Kami seemed to perhaps consider him worthy. After that he lived and trained with Goku for three years, which must've had a big influence in him too, and after he fused with Kami he didn't have any more evil in him. After the Cell saga he becomes more of a mentor and a teacher for Dende and the conscience of the group, like a wiseman. He had some exposure in the TOP and the Moro arc and now he's got a new power up after DBS Super Hero and there's a bit more lore about his race after the Grenolah arc. He's again one of the most powerful warriors but he's also the most knowledgeable.

Junior, as most DB character, has a lot of narrative potential that has yet to be tapped. He is a fusion of Kami, Nail, and Junior, but he considers himself mostly as Junior. He could be written as a DID character if they ever go for it. I find how he forgets a lot of stuff happened because he literally has multiple memories of the same time period. I would love to see his past of Nail and Kami in the future.

Super namekians supposedly reach adulthood a lot faster so I'd say it's because he is a super namekian
I always looked at Piccolo growing up fast as him being a member of the Namekian Warrior clan. It would makes sense for them to age quickly so they can enter the battlefield sooner.
Since I saw Z first, realizing Piccolo was only a few years older than Gohan tripped me kut

It dawned on me that both times Gohan saved the world from Garlic Jr and Cell he dressed like his mentor Piccolo. Piccolo along with Vegeta had the best character development.

1:13 I think of Piccolo as more of Gohan's older brother since he's only about 3 years older than him.
12:01 I like to know the age difference between human years and Namekian years. Because in human years Piccolo wasn't an adult, but maybe Namekian years he is at that point, thought I thought he speed up his own growth so he could fight Goku quicker.

In the orriginal Dragon Ball Piccolo is angered by the fact that the audience at the 23rd Martial Arts Tournament treated him like a monster. Whereas the old King Piccolo did not care in the slightest what people thought of him viewing human beings as ants and nothing more to be disposed of at will. Piccolo at first thought the same way at first before his redemption but the views of others seemed to have a deeper impact on him especially after what he said to Gohan all those years later. Piccolo's evil probably whethered down after his reincarnation as he became closer to the orriginal nameless namekian. It explains why the opinion of lowly mortals would matter to the new piccolo and not the old one.
'How can a being of pure evil change?'
My answer is this: Piccolo Daimao genuinely reincarnated.
Yes, his special reincarnation hacked the system, allowed him to transfer his memories to his new life along with his potential and accelerated growth...
But that's still a pure soul that's been washed clean by the process of reincarnation. Piccolo Jr isn't born evil, he's only born with a vendetta.
All those memories and that carried over hatred gave him some evil (but bear in mind how honorable Piccolo Jr was during the 23rd Budokai) but it was Evil by Nurture, not Evil by Nature.
To put it in Daoist Terminology, Piccolo's soul still had to pass through the Yellow Springs on the way to the egg, it just skipped the MengPoTang (the soup of forgetfulness)

As someone who grew up with a Step Dad and an absent "real dad," I will always say with absolute confidence, Piccolo is Gohan's father.

Piccolo was my then and now. Tough but kind. He cared so much for Gohan.
I always thought it would have been cool if we found out that Piccolo and Gohan bonded because Gohan was the descendant of Gyu-Maoh. Like I know the Ox-King was a human who called himself a demon, but if Gyu-Maog was like Piccolo in anyway a non demon who became a demon. It would be interesting to see if that was the case, and if that was part of the reason why Gohan had a hidden power and why Goten could become a SSJ so easily.
