    What an absolute solid video on these. Camera angles on the pedals, overlays on your video throughout for the user, super smooth commentary throughout (hats off if you haven't used a teleprompter) and great comparison to other products to see if there were any anomolies.
    Probably the best first look/check out ive seen on these barring the cycling god DCR himself (sorry)
    Your video footage too, I mentioned before the 1080p 60fps is some of the best stuff I watch on the whole of the YT whether im watching on my Samsung S7 Edge or 23" 1080p IPS monitor.
    thanks and thumbs up!

    Always a fan of your reviews. (love the sound of the gallahs in the back ground when out testing the pedals). Brings back memories of home. You may recall I had some really bad luck with the G2 power meters...since watching your review, I went back to them and they persuaded me to send my cranks and units in for re-gluing and set up. I have them back and seems to be working ok so far. Will do a side by side comparison with the wahoo kickr and see how accurate the results are. I did notice you still have yours on. Good show sir Miller.

    Put in a preorder for these back in October for a supposed 28nov release, which got pushed back to December which then got pushed back again to January so refunded and got a pair of p1's which haven't skipped a beat. Pretty happy with my choice!

    Hi Shane I'm so glad I watched this. I was trying to sell my P1 pedals and replace with Vector 3 for use on a work gym spin bike while using Zwift on IOS. Luckily for me release is delayed in the UK as they won't BT connect to IOS anyway. The only reason I'm changing the P1 is because it's almost impossible to install them with the gym bike casing blocking access to the inside of the crank.

    Another great video Shane, as always you early adopters are the beta testers for these companies. Most of the time I do not buy until the items are six to twelve months old and several firmware updates in the bag. Look at every single Garmin release of new products, the forums are full of people that have issues. Then down the road a bit, the firmware updates have fixed the issues, and by then you can normally get the item cheaper as well. Just upgraded to the Edge 820, what a great product now, not so when it first came out.

    I've had mine for a year and all of the problems are rooted in the battery compartment that has now been revised but I can't get them to ship replacements to me. Customer service in Singapore kept passing the buck and I finally saw them for sale as an accessory (the version 2 battery compartments) online. That pissed me off. The pedals themselves are excellent once you support the negative battery terminal with a non-conductive wedge (see the "cork" mod on other videos). I used non-conductive "romper room" floor tiles and cut a tiny wedge to support the pressure on the negative battery terminal. Other than that the pedals are fantastic in all conditions. They're just not ready for the average consumer or the impatient cyclist.

    Re: Bluetooth Connectivity Problem
    Shane, I encountered the same problem connecting the Vector 3 pedals (dual-sided) to my phone via the Garmin Mobile app. I tried your suggested fix and many other ones, such as moving the bike and phone to a blue-tooth free area of the house and dancing. Nope. Nothing.
    Then I verified again, the numbers on the spindle that I wrote down. It turns out, the LEFT and RIGHT spindles have different Device ID numbers! The instructions don't say anything about it, probably because there is one instruction set for both 3 and 3S. Solution: make sure you input the numbers on the LEFT spindle and it was good to go for me!

    Love the fact they're marketing these as BLE/Ant+ and they only have a roadmap for getting BLE implemented on them.. with no timeline available when called.. and shipping during the northern hemisphere's primetime trainer season where BLE to iOS is a must have. Understand they are working on the update, but their approach rankles me a little bit. Hoping you can help keep the pressure on the product team to get the firmware update out soonest!

    Just to share my experience with the Vector 3's. I got mine a couple of days ago and the first thing I did was connect them via bluetooth to the Garmin Connect app on my iPhone, I did this before anything else and they connected straightaway. I connected them via the Garmin Connect app rather than going into my phone settings and trying to add a Bluetooth device. Once they were connected via the Garmin Connect app they automatically appeared in the device list under my iphones Bluetooth settings. Hope this helps :-)

    I'd love to see a chart that shows the absolute difference in watts between the power meters. Otherwise, the difference is lost in the noise stroke-to-stroke. Might show the losses in the drive chain!
    Other stats ideas:
    - histogram the power difference in erg mode. Show mean, mode, and standard deviation of difference in power.
    - time-shift the two series and compare covarience, the maximum of which is the time delay between the sensors.
    Looking forward to Garmin Vector 3's here, still hard to find!

    Looking forward to the platform force placement analysis on the pedal, sounds interesting; I would really like to see what watt difference poor-to-perfect placement makes (not sure if possible to do a conclusive test on that?), didn't know placement was a thing, when I pedal I can't say I'm aware of platform force placement. // Very strange about the Erg mode discrepancy, 15w = ~0.2w/kg, that's significant. I wish these companies would release known issues and bug lists that will be addressed, rather than us hoping something will get fixed.

    Thank you Shane for this super interesting review. I ordered mine last September, but still waiting for them. It now seems obvious that products are put on the market faster and not necessarily 100% ready. I purchased the 1030 last October and guess what... it needed a firmware update (3.6) the get all functionalities such as the stress score. The main challenge with releasing too soon a product is that we lose confidence in them. Even if we get firmware updates over time, what can assure us that we can really rely on them from this firmware? Thanks again for all your videos.

    From the field: Garmin Vector 3 Battery Life Report
    Short version:
    Lasted 87 hours; battery warning problems; durability issues with rubber o-ring
    Details:
    I just had to change out my first set of batteries for the Garmin Vector 3 Pedals (dual-sided) since getting them at Xmas. My total run time according to Strava was 83h10m, but I added a 1.05 multiplier to get 87 hours or so because the pedals were probably on for some of the time before and after rides, and more importantly, before and after cafe stops. I live in Northern California and temperatures ranged from 45-75F during this time. I did not use these in the rain. I did not spill coffee on them during my cafe stops. Pedal smoothness was disabled.
    I started getting low battery warnings on my Garmin 820 head unit for the last 40 hours or so, but when I checked the battery life using the Garmin mobile app via bluetooth on my phone, it showed 3 full bars. Finally, today, the 3 full bars instantly turned into 1 red bar and I was convinced to change them. During those 40 hours though, I had perfect data from both pedals. This sounds like a voltage calibration issue before the pedals should start (prematurely) issuing the warning to the head unit. Garmin should address this via a firmware update.
    The battery change was straight forward, just needing a 4mm hex. The problem though, however, is the yellow rubber o-ring. As part of the waterproofing, Garmin opted for a thin, yellow o-ring that freely floats inside the spindle. This o-ring is not going to cut it. It's incredibly flimsy and seems to get caught in the threads of the cap, no matter how careful you are (I have a very steady hand for this type of task). If I were to guess, the o-ring will break after a couple more battery replacements ... so where do we get o-ring replacements??? Garmin? Anyone figured out a replacement from a random hardware store? We shouldn't have to do that for a $1,000 product ...
    Hmmmm ....

    • @gplama
      @gplama  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cheers for dropping in with the detailed user experience. I really appreciate the input from another user. I'll keep an eye on the batteries and rubber o-ring when I do a battery swap out (coming up soon)

    The +/- 1% refers to the delta on the pedals themselves. Meaning that you ride on Monday and then again on Tuesday, your readings will be within 1% of each other. All power meters vary in terms of reading watts. All that matters is that your own personal data remain consistent so you can measure your progress accurately.

    • @gplama
      @gplama  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Do you have any reference for this definition? I'm not saying it's incorrect. It's just not the commonly agreed definition of the published % of accuracy of power meters/trainers.

    Hey Shane,
    Do a static calibration on both sides. Mine measured too much on the left side and way less on the right. Garmin advised to remove batteries, remount the pedals and in my case I had to reduce the amount of grease on the threads (weird, but helped) Now both pedals measure less than 0,5% difference from the expected NM during the static calibration.

      Hi Shane, did a couple tests today, of which I've uploaded some samples. All in all: I think my garmin is totally OK. What we see in your case that was totally not the case with our tacx and garmin.
      Tests on 200W with 90 rpm and a few above 200 ones with 100 rpm:
      prntscr.com/hp9uhk : overview
      prntscr.com/hp9wo6 : zoomed into the 200W efforts
      prntscr.com/hp9x79 zoomed into the 250-300W efforts
      prntscr.com/hp9vvt: cadence
      prntscr.com/hp9vmu : left/right
      apart from that I can't pedal smoothly: Yes....occasionally happens that for a point in time the difference between the two is 10W, but in general, even around 300W-s they are within 4-5W.
      We did a couple tests and garmin is consistent, when the pedaling is smooth the rpm is consistent (so the tacx does not have to compensate) the data is totally OK and within the error range.

    At around 11" mark, I think it the difference may due to the torque on the chain by which the power is generated, and my imagination tells me that is why the readings might be different in a constant power and certain power pull (I know nothing of power meter science...so take this with a grain of salt). As it has been said many times before, great vid! Thanks for sharing!

    Hi,
    I noticed that on the graph it shows on the too right corner the garmin device used with the power meter and each power meter was tested with a different garmin computer! While that shouldn’t be an issue at all I am a strong believer that for accuracy you should test using the same garmin computer on the 3 power meters.

  • @davepratt9909

    I would expect the pedals to read higher than the Neo. The force on the user is the force applied by the trainer + the mechanical drag of the drive train. Remember, there are folks who claim changing the chain can get you a couple of watts, a few more with ceramic jockey wheels, using a special lube, etc. This should be a fairly fixed amount and show up as a constant offset vice a percentage of power. But I would think it would be tied to some extent with chain speed. From the data, it looks like it was 10 watts in this case. I wonder about the P1 that show no mechanical loss in your drive train.
    What in interesting (and I learned this from an interview with an hour record attempt's and a TT specialist's mechanic when they were going over the bike and asked about the big gears the riders were pushing ) is the chain drag is variable based upon the side to side flex of the chain based upon the chain line. So, to optimize the drivetrain, you want the chain as straight as possible between the cassette and chainring. To prove this (I've never seen it quantified, so it could be a really cool "Does chainline matter?" video!) is to have the Neo set at a constant power (erg mode), maintain a constant cadence, and do 3 or so minute (to avoid the transients associated with shifting and erg mode adjusting) efforts starting at the top of the cassette and work your way down. If the chain line does matter as since it is the only variable in this test, the offset will be different, if it doesn't then it will be constant. I would expect the offset will highest at the top and bottom of the cassette when the flex is the greatest.

    • @gplama
      @gplama  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Discussed in the video. I run a clean, straight chain. This shouldn't be 20W at 200W. It also doesn't factor in why it's more 'accurate' when not in ERG. I suspect there's a sample/frequency thing happening... but that's up to the engineers to look into I guess. I've heard every excuse there is for why power meters won't match up.... I'm ok with a few watts here or there... but not x2 the expected difference when adding up all the maximal 'errors'. It is what it is for now.... we need more data, more samples, and let's go from there.

    I got my Vector 3 1 week ago and I had similar issues regarding the Garmin Connect App until I entered the code from the LEFT pedal. Maybe that helps you if you haven't already tried it... ;)

    Great insights! Just ordered some Vector 3 pedals....... A discussion for another video: Can you feel the dead spots when using erg mode? Or does the flywheel neutralise the effect (Could you compensate by trying a very low cadence)? Does osymetric chainrings make a difference?

    I'd be super-interested - like many people no doubt - in Shimano power meter pedals. I love my Shimano gear but I don't prefer a crank-based power meter solution. I'm holding off buying Garmin Vector 3 or Favero Assioma DUO because I know that as soon as I do Shimano will release their version! Have you heard anything at all about possible power meter pedals from Shimano? Thanks and keep up the great analytical work!

    • @gplama
      @gplama  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Shimano can't even get their crank power meter based on their own crank working properly, so I don't hold out much hope for them getting the pedals right. There's a lot of people wanting SPD-SL cleat power meter pedals, myself included. For now, dive into a pair of Assiomas. I LOVE SPD-SL blue cleats... but the Assioma with Black 0deg float have been solid. I used the same cleats on the P1 for a year prior.

      @@gplama Thanks for the quick & concise response. The Assiomas are my current choice, almost entirely based on your work. I'd love Shimano to get it right, but can accept that it probably won't happen, at least not for some time yet. Guess I'll stop holding back and go for it! Cheers.

    Garmin releasing a product that needs a firmware update or 2? Sounds about par for the course. I still would love these pedals (once the firmware is updated to reduce that separation and adds Bluetooth). My wife is looking at a power meter fairly soon. She has a Trek bike (so their BB axle is not the standard), does not want hub based meter (so she can use a dedicated trainer wheel on the trainer but still measure with her meter), wants below 165mm crank arms (she's 5'2" with shorter legs and limited hip flexibility). And she uses Speedplay pedals (narrower spindles and wider float). Her current best bet is getting a Cobb crankset and Powertap C1 chainrings. But these pedals have her interested. Big selling point is ease of swapping between bikes. I'm going to have her test some basic Look pedals with 6* float one day to see if she actually needs that. But she also uses iOS devices for Zwift so lack of Bluetooth would be a turn off for her too.
    The hardware on these looks brilliant. The software? Looks like par for the course for Garmin. The good news is they seem to always fix their firmware eventually. The bad news is they seem to often forget to do it before release. Their huge market share plus their great hardware lets them get away with it. Same with the head units (I'm sure Shane still has nightmares of the 820 at release). I've swapped to using a Wahoo Elemnt Bolt. Here's to hoping PowerTap does a 2nd generation pedal (P2?) that looks a bit more standard and basically is just iterated to compete. A little competition is always nice for us consumers!
    Looking forward to you showing the pedal analysis. From what I read that was the big difference between these and say the Favaro pedals. I have a Pioneer dual sided crank meter that has great analysis. Unfortunately it requires using their head unit which was garbage. So until they work with other head unit makers to expand it, all I get is power and LR balance. Definitely like the meter but the lack of bluetooth, missing features without their head unit, and bad head unit would have me looking elsewhere in the future.

    Excellent video and one of the reasons along with DCRainmaker’s review that I picked up a pair this weekend. Haven’t had a chance to use much but they certainly look the part and were easy to fit. I wonder did mine come with different cleats as mine did have a marker on either side similar to the shimano ones. (Mine say ARC R2 on them). I’ll be using with a kickr. I wonder what difference the over reading would actually make if using the pedals as the power source in zwift for ERG? Would it mean your steady state effort is actually 20W less that’s what it shows on screen? I guess it’s not possible to know as you can’t collect the power data from the kickr if using the pedals as the power source. Maybe try it with a comparison to a crank based power meter?

    Thanks for this review, very informative. P1 dual sided have now significantly dropped prices in the UK (now slightly below Garmin) Would you recommend the new Vector 3's or a great deal on the P1's..? Any thoughts much appreciated.

    I'm currently using the dura ace 9000 pedals and love the feel of the pedals as well as the ability to adjust the bearings. I'm interested to know how these Vector 3 pedals perform mechanically and if there is any detectable play. I want to use them but I don't want to buy a pedal I can't adjust.

    Hi Shane great vid as usual
    Are you saying the difference in power readings weren’t consistently low or high but it was fluctuating (which is more worrying than showing consistently low or high as if you knew the difference you could compensate for that)

    • @gplama
      @gplama  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      My observations so far was that it read 8-10% higher than the Neo and Drivo in steady state ERG modes in the range of 200-220W. This is a very limited data set I've collected though.... more ERG sessions required.

    I've been using the Vector 2 setup for 2 years - I didn't really like them until I got a good firmware update about a year ago.....since then, it's been working very well. Totally unrelated to your issues, but I do notice that my Stages power meter generally reads 20-40+ watts higher overall for a ride than my Vector 2 while comparing average heart rate/effort level, and my left/right foot power balance these days is only around a 1-2% difference at the most. So, I guess if one wants really impressive wattage numbers, get a Stages? lol I'm curious though how the power numbers stack up between the Vector 2 and 3 with your test.

    I hate it when the batteries that come with the V3 is dead. It took me a couple of hours to realize that lol. Then it wasn't just 1 LR44, it was 2 pcs! I got pissed during the configuration phase and went and bought 4pcs of Batts and replaced them all! WTH man Garmin...new batch new set, dead Batts....gave me a headache. Best part was the LED blinked but in the short span of setting up, they died lol Anyways, after replacing, everything went smooth even during my calib on my wahoo elemnt bolt, hurrah!

    Huh uh dude, rule #1 of the Garmin Brand never buy version 1 items cuz they just make you their own personal beta tester and often costs you more than version 2 minus the flaws. Learned the hard way over and over. (Considering it's a complete redesign it really is version 1)

    I would like for a few others to respond. I purchased the Vector 3 power pedals in August. They have been spotty at best. They connected up right away straight out of the box. Then in less than a month they would start malfunctioning during the ride, working, not working, no reason behind it! So, I changed batteries, bingo, we are working again for a few weeks. Then a repeat of the malfunctioning, spotty reporting on the head unit. So, either battery life is a few working days or the units are just awful. I cannot say that I am a happy customer. Can anyone relate their experience and a possible fix to this situration. I still have my receipt so they can go back!!

    Shane I bought the Vector 3s and love them for outdoor work. However, am I the only one who only gets 50% of the watts in Zwift? It seems likely to me that Zwift is not reporting 2x watts for single sided set ups. Have you found otherwise? I have all updates. PS Wahoo bolt and fenix 5 report just fine.

    • @gplama
      @gplama  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hmmmm. That’s one for Zwift Support. I know they x2 the PowerTap P1S (and the P1 as they aren’t combined in the one channel). Sounds like they need to identify and do the same for the V3S (only the S as the dual versions are true LR).

    I've been sitting on the fence on vector 3's for a while.My biggest concern is durability especially when one considers that the pedal is usually the first thing to strike the ground if the bike falls over or is crashed.The strain gauges within the spindle I'm assuming are quite delicate and any change to that would affect accuracy, which defeats the purpose of spending $1500 AUD on a set of pedals with power.Having said all that I still like the concept and love the simplicity.Comments please.

    Did you try out the Assioma Duo's? I just bought a pair of them (while getting my V3's replaced under warrenty). I have only been riding them indoors and for 15 hours, but so far they have been absolutely flawless. One note here, my L/R balance are spot on with the Assioma's. This definitely is more in line with my own perception. I suspect the V3's for having an imbalance going on. Could this be the same you see, causing a lower power output? Untill further has been cleared out regarding V3, I'm going to keep the Assioma's - simply because they're so solid and flawless....
