  • @mrmikealanbrown

    I was burned so many times on Vector 2 and Vector 3. Think I went through three sets of Vector 3 via Garmin's support. Not a single issue with Favero Assiomas over the last 18 months. If Garmin had moved to a sealed battery compartment, I might consider Vector again in the future. As it stands with the many iterations of battery cover, seals, baby oil, etc. Not a chance.

    • @perryvath7617

    My right side pedal seems to have just decided to die... Worked back and forth with Garmin and they sent me "new" refurb pedals after trying a battery circuit board replacement that still didn't fix the original dead pedal. All up and running smoothly again now with the new pedals. Garmin continuing to be great at customer support!

      Took me 5 months to warranty a faulty Assioma, every week they gave me a new set of tasks to perform. Luckily I had multiple power meters on my bike and was able to prove to them that their pedal was off using DC Rainmaker's analyzer tool and they finally sent me one but not until they confirmed that my old one was disabled. Truly appalling customer service. The replacement ones work perfectly btw, and I'm pretty sure that most people's pedals do too but I can't get behind a company that treats their customers this way because even the best products have a potential to need customer support one day so I'm getting rid of mine as soon as my Rallys arrive.

    you mention cost toward the end - the big sell for me was the ability to use the spd on multiple bikes - I can use on my mountain and gravel set ups - you are not locked into a crank-based meter - I race/ride gravel - cx - and mtb - and can use these pedals on all three - to upgrade all those bikes to power using crank-based would surely be more -

    Have you tested the TREK Domane+ e-assist bikes? Having had the opportunity to use one Domane+ on long term loan while waiting delivery of my Domane+ SLR7 giving me a total of 18 months use. I have experienced vrious problems with the chain comming off eventually so badly the crank had to be dismantled by TREK to alow the final part of the chain to be removed from bertween the PRAXIS chin ring and the TQ motor. Following which the e-assist became steadily less effective. Then the TQ Control Panel had to be replced under warranty and the e-saasistbecame steadily more ineffective. The bike is on its way back from TREKS facility in England who claim to have found no problems. To my surprise TREK claim they relied upon the
    STRAVA calculated power during test rides. For my personal tests rides I used my Garmin Rally XC 200 on the Domane + and then on my Domene + 7 SLR none e-assist bike as a comparison. A very interesting test for an expert like you.

    Summary: So they tweaked a few things on their 4 year old pedal, changed the name and are charging $100 more when the pricing of power meters has been trending downwards. Maybe they didn't get the memo that the competition is producing power meters that are just as good (I would argue better) at half the price. The ability to switch bodies is a moot point when you can have almost 3 separate full time power meters on your bikes for the price of these + a conversion kit.

    As ever, great data analysis. But, bottom line these are tall, heavy, cheapo second rate pedals with an average power meter connected (and a woeful reliability record). Garmin aren't a pedal manufacturer. A 4iiii/Shimano crank can be swapped in 2 minutes and a road one will easily serve for gravel, or XC/trail. Yeah, not LR, but that's unnecessary. SRAM is harder to cover, but Quark is fine, if harder to swap. Garmin are gonna be blown out the water once SRAM integrate power into Time pedals. Avoid.

      @@cusebike5391 I have not heard of failures yet either, but it's guaranteed; after 250 charge cycles Li-Ion batteries have lost 80%, if they get cold or hot during use, the cells damage more.
      Now I'm not sure how long it takes to reach 250 cycles. Let's assume you ride 2.5h per day, one cycle will be 20 days, so 250 cycles will take 20*250=5000 days or - assuming you ride every day of the year - 13.7 years of riding.
      So I guess it's not really going to be a problem in practice, unless there's catastrophic deep discharge (that's how I killed a laptop battery once :/)

    The meter doesn't auto temperature correct or auto zero. It might be "accurate" but only if you calibrated it correctly which means the pedal has to be 100% at the ambient temperature that you'll be you're riding at then you better say a prayer that it doesn't see much of a temperature difference during your ride......good luck with that considering it's 12" above the surface that you're riding on. These differences can make as much as a 10-15% difference in the readings that you'll see. Garmin and this review missed the mark on this one.

    • @Dcrainmaker

      Your first sentence isn’t true (at all). Thus, the rest of your comment also is inaccurate.

    • @mikevw6767
      @mikevw6767 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Dcrainmaker We'll have to agree to disagree. I've written Garmin and they've confirmed my first sentence. Additionally, I've performed very controlled tests with a crank based based power meter along side the Garmin under varying temperature conditions. The Garmin didn't fair too well. I stand by my comments.

    • @Dcrainmaker
      @Dcrainmaker  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mikevw6767 Yeah, that's simply not true. It has both auto-zero and temp comp. That's very well-proven and confirmed by countless people. In fact, I even noted the singular bug with temp comp in this very review, which ironically enough was fixed last week (Thurs) in the first Rally firmware update (which addresses massive 'instant' temp swings like bringing a bike indoors from a cold-weather ride). But simply comparing to another single crank based power meter doesn't make Rally wrong. It just means you have a difference that needs to be determined. Which is why I test with 2-4 *other* power meters.

    • @mikevw6767
      @mikevw6767 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Dcrainmaker I've tested with the new 3.0 firmware update. I actually hoped that it would solve the problem but it didn't. I've been suspicious about this meter for some time. My suspicions finally broke when I rode two laps around around a local mtn bike trail and got very interesting results. Measurable temperature gradients were involved. The bike was in a warm car for 30 minutes before I arrived at the trail, it was 40 deg F outside and I calibrated the unit as soon as I took it out of the car. The outside air changed by 15 deg F during my two laps. I took a 10 minute break between laps. The head unit shut off, and I didn't recalibrate when I turned it back on, I didn't think I needed to. Both laps were nearly identical in time and heart rate, but the average watts and NP between the rides differed by 15%. The power trace looked nearly identical when I placed the two laps over top of each other, just one was shifted 15% downward. That just seems like a very odd result. The laps were done within 30 seconds of each other over a hour ride, same HR, same course, the wind didn't change, same tire pressures (i checked between laps) but the power was 15% different?? The trail was fairly flat, not much variation. That's when I started honing in on the temperature issue. So I performed some very controlled tests much like you do, with the Garmin pedals on the same bike with a crank based meter that temperature corrects. I've been able to conduct controlled tests under varying temperature conditions and it's not hard to replicate the 10-15% difference between the meters when temperature comes into play. I contacted Garmin and they've told me twice, the unit doesn't auto zero or temperature correct so nothing can be done. I have ZERO trust in this meter especially when it's spit out NP numbers on rides way higher than I know is right or that I am capable of. It's been a disappointing purchase to say the least.

    • @mikevw6767
      @mikevw6767 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Dcrainmaker Guess I owe you a retraction! You got into my head if I had done my testing as controlled as I should have. After all, you're a pro at this stuff. So I placed the pedal in a freezer for a few hours, took it out, calibrated it immediately then I warmed it to simulate what'll happen when it warms during a ride. I only let it warm for 10-15 in front of a fan, it felt warm, so I thought I let it warm up far enough. I then noticed the same big errors when I had the bike on a smart trainer. I was right so I thought, I had further proof. What's this DC rainmaker talking about!? Then a few hours went by, so I thought if my theory is correct, the pedal is certainly at room temperature by now so I should still see the same huge errors if it doesn't compensate. Well......the readings I got from it actually matched the smart trainer a little better than the crank based meter! It still doesn't explain the same mtn bike laps...same lap times, same HR, but 10-15% difference in power output. Thanks for your replies and patience! At least you lead me to have confidence in this pedal now. If it self compensates as I just demonstrated, then why is a calibration necessary before every ride??
