Hi Phil, Finally another interesting piece of news on second-hand shoe store are those rejected form ithe factory due to odds sizes or slightly inferior quality quite similar to one of your previous weekend markets by the way how is the Christmas atmosphere in Hatyai ? thanks for sharing, and Happy Father's Day. 😀😀😀

Thank you, Francis! Someone else suggested that the shoes might be QC rejects, while others suggested they were fake. I'm still not sure, but being rejected because of slight quality problems seems to be quite feasible.
Christmas is always a strange affair in Thailand. Being predominantly a Buddhist country, there is no real concept of Christmas and where I live there are absolutely no signs of Christmas. However, while at Greenway yesterday - and also if I go to a big mall - they play Christmas songs in the background. You also see the occasional Christmas tree. Central Festival actually has a huge tree. I think that creating a festive atmosphere is good for the retail industry and Thais simply like coloured fairy lights.
As I mentioned in the video, many of these markets are very alike. Once you've been to one, the others don't seem all that different. And when you've been dozens of times they start to lose their appeal! But even though I'm quite jaded now, I still enjoy the occasional visit! Best wishes.

I visited Preem Import last Monday (27/11) & I found the shoes to be well cleaned & looked new for some. Unfortunately, I couldn't find anything I like from the cheapest range of THB299 per pair. Conditions didn't look too good.

You beat me! After living here for a long time, that was my first visit. It seems to be very well known among visiting Malaysians. Neither did we find anything yesterday, and came away empty handed. Quite a few people seem to think the shoes are fake. I'm really not sure, but fake goods are a big problem in this part of the world.

@@expatlivinginthailand Indeed a very popular shopping venue for Malaysians and I got this information from TH-cam, so I decided to go take a look which was actually on Loy Khratong day albeit I am not aligned to the idea of wearing a pair of used shoes. 😁

I'm not either, but the shoes here looked new! I didn't see anything I liked, but had I done so I would have been tempted!

I'm thinking maybe the stock at the 2nd-hand shoe shop (some at least) are QC-rejected stock from the factory they came from. I recall the Russian Market in Phnom Penh had those sorts of things, with many 'defects' so tiny they're practically unnoticeable.
I'm not too big on wearing used shoes myself, I'm actually more interested in the Canal R5 market.. that would be very interesting to visit 👌
I'm in Hat Yai next the day after Christmas.. here's hoping that the deco will still be up and the tourists gone 😅
    Great vid 👍

Thank you! I always appreciate your comments. That's another good suggestion. A few other people think they are fake, but, as you say, they could be QC rejects. That market wasn't great. It's small, with not a lot on offer. Greenway, where we went on to afterwards, was much better.
The Christmas decorations will definitely still be up when you visit. There is no concept here of Twelfth Night and taking down decorations. You will often see Christmas decorations in May, and they are still playing Christmas music!

Thanks Phil for highlighting the 2nd hand shoe shop. This is the 1st time I have heard of the shop. I drove into Hatyai mid November for 6 nights. Perhaps next time, I will try to visit this shop. I didn't drove in Hatyai since 15 years ago and I was quite happy that there is no parking fee charge on road side, Central Festival Mall, Macro, Lotus or Robinson except for Odean Shopping Mall where you need to purchase 100 baht value to get free parking stamp otherwise if need to pay 30 baht.

Pleasure! It was the first time I'd heard of this shop too, but my wife knew about it. When I went back to my home town in the UK in March, there was zero free parking. Places where I used to park to get takeaways now have parking meters. There's quite a lot of free parking in Hat Yai, but some roads have parking on one side on odd number days and the other side on even number days. The signs are in Thai, and I have seen several Malaysian cars get clamped for failing to observe this. There are parking wardens on the Niphat Uthit roads, but it's very cheap (unlike the UK).

any nightlife in hatyai to enjoy ? or couple friendly massage?

    • @expatlivinginthailand
      @expatlivinginthailand  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

The word 'nightlife' has many meanings in Thailand! When I first got to Hat Yai in 2003, there was prostitution everywhere and several large soapy massage places. A few years ago, they all disappeared. I'm not sure why this happened or who was behind it. Nowadays, there are almost no visible signs of the commercial sex industry, but obviously, there will always be demand, and it will always be there. If you've been to places like Pattaya, Hat Yai is very different. If you want that kind of thing, it's there if you can find it. Where do you look? I don't know. I've been married for 14 years, and I've never been particularly interested in that aspect of Thailand. If you speak to a hotel bellboy or tuk-tuk driver, they should be able to point you in the right direction. Regarding massage, the services that are on offer vary from shop to shop and from girl to girl. I'm sure you can get what you want, but I'm afraid I don't know where.

@@expatlivinginthailand ahh we are married malaysian couples making our first visit to thailand so hatyai is nearest from border which is decent ...we would like to enjoy the food , alcohol and some body massage and lastly cheap shopping of goods. By nightlife i meant bars and pubs open till late nnight because all i see is empty street on internet in hatyai nightlife maybe due to heavy muslim population . Anyways thank you cheers

    • @expatlivinginthailand

@onelove370 I receive all kinds of queries, and when people ask about 'nightlife', they normally mean a certain kind of nightlife!
There is a large population of Muslims, but there is also a large Chinese population in Hat Yai. The nightlife scene isn't what it was 20 years ago, but you should still be able to find what you want.
For nightlife bars and pubs, head to Thumnoonvithi Road. This is a long road that runs from the train station out to the University. In the section near Lee Gardens, you will find some bars that are popular with foreigners. If you continue along this road, you will come to a section that has bars and nightclubs that are popular with the local Thais.

A few other people have suggested the same thing. I thought they were genuine, but I have no idea how to identify genuine shoes! I'm doing great, thanks! There's been a lot going on, but I'm making good progress. I've noted the Lee Gardens suggestion and will do something soon. Hope you're also doing well!
