That’s what fado is all about... you don’t need to understand the lyrics, you feel the Portuguese guitar, the minor chords, the minor melody, the voice. Sublime.

"Oh people of my land" is a tribute to the land of malencolia, longing and saudade! The singer and the audience are so moved because they share the Portuguese experience "destiny that chains us all".
"When you hear the groans of a guitar singing," it's like the melody is calling you home and "you could almost see it as a lullaby, but it's really agony".
"This sadness that I bring with me, I inherited from all of you", is a reference to the melancholy at the heart of the Portuguese people and that is inherited from our ancestors ... the men who lost their lives at sea, the lonely women waiting at the altar , the shattered children, the emigrants ... This music embodies this feeling that all Portuguese can relate to and that is part of our core being."
I use this "definition", because i cant give one better...

To sing Fado is to "cry a story", usually a sad story made out of hardship, broken heart, loneliness and the feeling of emptiness by missing someone (in portuguese we have a word for it: "Saudade"). That's what she is doing. That harshness in the voice, that strain is what you get when crying.

Ok people, seat back, relax, fasten your seat belts… this is going to be a long one…again.
So Fado, it is a genre of traditional singing born and raised in Portugal, more specifically in Lisbon. This way of singing, historically speaking, can be traced to the 1800’s but it has roots in Islamic traditions dating back to the middle ages.
Fado means fate but in a sense of unescapable fate a destiny foretold and that you can not escape it,be it finding love or that unavoidably meeting with miss Death.
Fado was born in the streets of the Lisbon it was the song of the sailors and the varinas (female fish sellers), of prostitutes and criminals…but not exclusively , it became very popular very quickly and all of the sudden you could hear Fado being sung in noble houses all over Lisbon and everywhere in Portugal.
Also traditional to Fado is that tear shape guitar with a peculiar sound that you can see in the video,it is called Portuguese guitar…can you believe it?
Anyways moving on just a few words about Mariza, she’s basically the one single artist that brought back Fado into the mainstream and made it fresh and, dare I say it, modernized it.
As for your reaction, Magne my friend… this reaction video is fantastic, is one word to describe it but more important than that … there’s a moment in this video that it is just magical… stick me and it will be worth it.
You got Fado completely! This one in particular is exactly what you said, it’s like crying, during the all song she’s crying. She starts crying softly almost like a murmur and ends up in a desperate, soul tearing cry…
I’m not going to try and explain the song but very succinctly it’s a lament of someone that realizes something about her/him…
You also got it right about the women that cry at funerals, it is a very old tradition still in use in some parts of Europe, India, North Africa… basically you pay women to come and pray and morn the dead ones, there different reasons but it was a way of poor old widows to make an extra coin.
Now we have talked several times about music being an universal language and one doesn’t need to know the language the song is being sang but this video in particular has a moment in it that illustrates this idea… it is a perfect moment… a magical moment.
It starts at 03:20 Mariza sings the following: “Sempre que se ouve um gemido”
    De uma guitarra a cantar
    Fica-se logo perdido
    Com vontade de Chorar”
Roughly translated means: “whenever one hears a lament
    of a guitar singing
    one is instantly lost
    With a desire to weep”
And when she endes saying “weep”, all the poetry, all the emotion all the feeling she’s singing comes down you face in the form of a tear.
Go back and watch it, I’ll wait…..
Got it? If that doesn’t give chills and if that didn’t at least made your lip tremble …than you are dead, you are not human.
This is already a way to big comment and I’m gonna end here by saying thank you Magne for trusting my suggestions.
And as usual thank you Magne for sharing your musical journey.

Is both mine and yours this fado
    destiny that tides us (together)
no matter how much it is denied
by the strings of a guitar
    whenever one hears a lament
    of a guitar singing
    one is instantly lost

    Oh people of my land

This sadness which I carry on

    destiny that tides us (together)
no matter how much it is denied
by the strings of a guitar
    whenever one hears a lament
    of a guitar singing
    one is instantly lost
    With a desire to weep
    Oh people of my land
    Now I understand
This sadness which I carry on
Was from you that I received
    and it would seem tenderness
If I let myself be soothed
    my anguish would be greater
my singing (would be) less sadder
    Oh people of my land

The song from the movie is Canção do Mar from Dulce Pontes. Fado is a celebration of life because is about keeping and nurturing all the love and joy you once had and for some reason it is gone… but the memories no.

    Ó gente da minha terra
    Oh, people of my land
É meu e vosso este fado
It’s yours and mine, this fado
    Destino que nos amarra
It is a destiny that binds us
    Por mais que seja negado
No matter how much you want to deny it
    Às cordas de uma guitarra
[We are bound] by the strings of the guitarra
Sempre que se ouve um gemido
Every time you hear the groaning
    De uma guitarra a cantar
    Of the guitarra singing
    Fica-se logo perdido
    You find yourself lost
    Com vontade de chorar
    With a desire to cry
    Ó gente da minha terra
    Oh, people of my land
    Agora é que eu percebi
Now I have come to understand
    Esta tristeza que trago
That this sadness that I carry with me
Foi de vós que a recebi
I get it from all of you
    E pareceria ternura
And perhaps it might be a kindness [or tenderness]
    Se eu me deixasse embalar
If I were left to bottle up
    Era maior a amargura
    Most of this bitterness
    Menos triste o meu cantar
Perhaps it would make my singing less sad
    Ó gente da minha terra
    Oh, people of my land
    Agora é que eu percebi
Now I have come to understand
    Esta tristeza que trago
That this sadness that I carry with me
Foi de vós que a recebi
I get it from all of you
    [repeat]
    Ó gente da minha terra
    Agora é que eu percebi
    Esta tristeza que trago
    Esta tristeza que trago
    Foi de vós que recebi

It's also considered Cultural and immaterial heritage of humanity, like probably some other kinds of music like Fandango who is spanish.
