I did crossfit before my back surgery (crossfit was not the reason I needed it), and I was able to get up and walk the next day after surgery without a lot of help and remained mobile and I am getting slowly back into it and have been able to get stronger since. If it wasn't for doing crossfit I wouldn't be pushing myself to walk, or get moving and would be sitting on my couch eating bon bons.
I like the general idea of these concepts and I think they are well explained/defined for a roadmap to a person's personal fitness history. Provided that the same person does the same workout at a later date and has improved on their time I see this as an indicator of better fitness or fitness capacity. I began crossfit a few years ago as a very unfit, very unhealthy, very overweight person. Crossfit has been a crucial roadmap to my better health. You could say that crossfit saved my life. Glassman made comments to the 240/160 BP. Mine was worse than that. (I am now normal with no meds :). I was saved by the lifeguard and began swim lessons. I continue to improve and my ability to track my improvement through decreased times and increased PRs help maintain my motivation and allows me to set milestones. I am an older athlete and still have the mental advantage that I continue to improve. I can say without a doubt that I am fitter today than at any other time in my life. However, where I get lost a little when you try to define someone being fitter than someone else. ie: fittest person on earth.. when you do not consider the height or the weight of the competitors. If you assume that horsepower is the key to fitness.... (It is stated that the person who can move the same weight for the same distance in less time is fitter?) Most WODs are time based.. How many reps can you do in a set period. How long did it take you to do a specific amount of reps. etc. Total work in a clean and jerk would have to consider the height of the competitors? A person who is 5'8" lifts the weight to much less height than a 6"5" person. If they both complete 50 clean and jerks in the same time period at the same bar weight they are equally as fit on paper but the taller athlete did significantly more work in the same time period. The taller person is fitter.. The weight of the athletes should also be considered. During a thruster the athlete must squat the weight of the bar and some % of body weight. If the % of body weight is somewhat equal, then the heavier athlete is lifting more weight. Given that taller athletes are generally heavier than shorter athletes this adds an additional weight component to the movement in addition to the increased range of motion of the movement by the taller athlete. What research is Crossfit doing to analyze these differences? Maybe a weighted scaling system or even height/weight classifications?. I understand that the Hopper is designed to try and level these differences. However, as a tall athlete I find that the advantage in the majority of workouts goes to the shorter stockier athlete. It would certainly help me with my handstand pushups :)
Fuck yea. Glassman's goal isn't to sell this info, he is establishing his argument that the "fitness" industry is bunk. The things that they'll pull from that data will be amazing! Just wait, another few years? Idk about you but I wanna look at that synopsis!
+tcarr302 i too can't wait to see how much further crossfit will evolve and change for the better like how it has changed since 2008 games till 2015 games.
+tcarr302 I'd genuinely be interested to see what pans out. The only issue I see, is such science was touted in 2010, but nothing ever came of it (i.e. "We got the science"). It was talked about again through 2011. Now it's 2016. If nothing else, let's see a sneak preview of raw data or preliminary examinations of trends, etc., provided it exists.
This definition for fitness makes a lot of sense, however the defition of health doesn't: you get more and more health with time no matter what you do? no sense. I would argue that HEALTH IS THE TIME DERIVATIVE OF YOUR FITNESS 2D INTEGRAL. That would make much more sense.
im not a crossfitter but this looks more like a serious attempt to define health and fitness, something like an answer to Canguilhem's question. this is interesting and it happened this attempt has brought fitness to a new level... of course bodybuilders are now consistently doing compound and endurance are doing intensity, but glassman has started his work fourteen years ago... mike mentzer was not doing compound... yet glassman looks now very sure of himself and he doesnt address any of the legitimate critics that arose against crossfit... like those from the paleo founder about the beginners and progression...
I love Greg Glassman and CrossFit but these are kind of his own crazy calculations, but he is more trying to make a point and it sounds nice; and he has a good point! ;p
Lon Kilgore never taught at WSU (which is in Wichita KS). He taught at Midwestern State in Wichita Falls. Kilgore authored several early CFJ articles. You would think Glassman would know the difference.
man... i am so close to becoming a personal trainer, and its stuff like these talks that have really pushed me away from my current work field. I guess thanks? lol
You can use crossfit methodology while personal training. Write workouts and programs tailored to each client of course, constantly varied while being objective, measurable, and repeatable. Do strength focused sessions, endurance focused sessions, do both (metcons), phase emphasis over weeks and months at a time... I am also a personal trainer but use these thought processes each time I step into a session. Become a CPT for your employers, most wont hire you without it, then take the CF-L1 and your skills exponentially grow as a trainer/coach.
GDAVALOS Its pretty funny how mad you're getting over something like this. As you're reading this, I want you to raise your hand. Thats how many people care about your little CrossFit internet hissy fit. And an FYI, the New Orleans Saints NFL team uses a CrossFit training program. Before you ask me how I know this, the head coach Sean Peyton has publicly said this and he was a guest at one of the open workouts this year.
Why do you people come here to talk shit? If you don't like it don't watch it and move on with your life. Don't kid yourself into thinking anyone gives a shit about your opinions. If you don't like crossfit don't do it.
Power is definitely not the truest expression of functionality!! Mr crossfit sounds like he's created a new religion and all I heard in this seminar is how amazingly brilliant and all knowing he is haha Please!
***** Well that's the thing... Scientific scrutiny? Show me the research papers. And I probably wouldn't say everyone has different definitions but a lot of people do. My definition is different.

Is there a Part 3??
Thanks!

Feels like a discipline of obtaining power...ultimate control...no such thing.
Anyone knows where or how to find out more about the science project he talks about in the end of the video?
What was it called? I dont remember.. I'm curious too.

you care that's why you're on here bwahahaha, the saints to Oly lifting as do all NFL teams they do not do WODS
This man is out of fitness needs to follow his knowledge
David Caballero So does Bill Belichick need to have the power, speed and skills of NFL players just to coach them? 🤦🏻♂️
cool
Sounds like your new box should be sick good luck

Everyone has their own definition of fitness. This guy is laying down the law on what fitness is. Bleh.
