Big fan of Moom myself but Magnet is alright too if you want something free. There's a big culture of also paying for software on MacOS that might take some getting used to.
You're absolutely right about how people list their macbooks! Potentially, though, you could find some good deals if you're willing to go check them out. I've gotten a pretty good deal on a MacBook pro that way.
Mac’s get the hate for being pricey and not upgradable. BUT. If you’re a programmer or editor, they’re beasts. They also last incredibly long with no need for an upgrade. If you’re looking for one I suggest a pro solely because it has fans. Chips and storage is up to you. Trackpad is flawless. Mac OS is truly infinitely better than the others.
The closing statement is what got me lol, I was once (not even that long ago) firmly in the "why would I even buy an apple product when it's so overpriced compared to anything else?" camp. Then I got the iPhone 12 and yeah it was expensive, but I don't think I can ever go back to Android. This thing just ... works, and the integration with other Apple products I've bought since is straight up incredible to use. Still haven't (and might never) bought a macbook though, because I do like gaming so I'll need a PC regardless, so when my options are a PC upgrade or a whole new second system, I just can't even begin to justify it.
You can turn on tapping on the trackpad in settings. Another feature you might find useful is two finger tap = right click that you can also turn on in the trackpad settings.

I got a bottom spec M2 mac mini about two years ago and it has been an awesome content consumption, chatting, and sysadmin machine for me. The trackpad support is so good that even on the desktop I use one of apples bluetooth ones (the first gen that takes AA batteries so it's never gonna "expire" like the current ones do) ((also have a ploopy on order for use with my linux machine at work)). I realised that a lot of days I didn't actually do anything that demanded my gaming PC and it's just loud and warm for no reason then.
12:45 I mean honestly if you're saying you spent $1K on this thing, the closest comparison probably isn't a used XPS. The Snapdragon X machines that came out this year can be found for around the $1K mark and supposedly have stellar battery life (although they certainly have their own problems haha), and I wouldn't be shocked if you could find an Intel Lunar Lake or Ryzen AI machine for a similar price on sale right now, both of which are miles ahead of the usual crop of Windows machines. The Windows world still can't compete with the higher end M3 and M4 chips, but I wouldn't be surprised if a new machine from this year's lineup could come close to an M1 Pro MacBook Pro at this point. It's a really interesting time in the laptop space right now.
Being able to open the screen with one finger is, btw, a very very easy mod on all newer thinkpads (by newer i mean 2015+). You can adjust the torque of the hinges arbitrarily and I have all mine set to open like macbooks.
As a Thinkpad user of 20 years, I too got bit by the Apple ease of use, it just works, and it works well philosophy. And as an M1 Pro user myself I managed to get the 14" Model here in the UK for £695 and have not looked back. This machine flies through anything I throw at it, and has been my go to for the last few months of ownership. Great Video my friend! :)
I remember when i first got my m1 air. shit was magic and i was in love at first sight. I had a few windows laptop before, and sure they're cool. but the engineering and quality of a macbook is truly different. even when people showed me their expensive windows laptops (like the envy or xps), the macbook just has something to it that makes it feel out of this world. anyways, im hoping i can rock 6 more years outta mine. got it in 2022, and it has been holding up. such a great little machine.
A few quick UI tips for people new to macOS: 1. You can get tap-to-click back in trackpad settings. I don't know why Apple doesn't have this on by default. They did the same stupid thing with right-click on their mouse for years when it could have just been on by default. 2. You can double click the top gray area of any app window to make it full-screen without making a separate desktop view. Or you can option-click the green traffic light button. 3. cmd + tab to switch between applications. cmd + tilde to switch between open windows within one application.
Biggest mistake everyone coming from Microsoft makes with MacOS is wanting it to work EXACTLY like Windows. But MacOS is Unix and if you take the time to learn the gestures and key commands you find that it can be faster. But take the time to explore all the settings for the apps you use most. Like Finder, you can make finder works in about 8 different ways so explore them all and see which works best for you. Don’t ignore the accessibility options as well like the added 3 finger drag option that is hidden in the accessibility menu. But it’s frustrating at first when you are so use to doing things one way and it’s different in the Unix world. Also go into the chrome flags and turn off partial swap and Chrome won’t use any swap and save your SSD. Chrome uses up to 8 Gb of Swap no matter how much RAM your system has.
9:23 You can double tap the top of the window on most apps to enter full screen, I found that when learning MacOS on a M series Laptop. If that doesn’t work, it’s likely double tapping on the edges that show the arrows will, and if that doesn’t, the newest MacOS added proper full screen (That isn’t quite fullscreen, there’s a small border around each app, if you don’t like any of these solutions, get a 3rd party app)
in case you didn't know, you can enable tap to click in trackpad settings. also macOS sequoia has snap style window management (i'm told it took this long because of a microsoft patent on it applying to operating systems). gaming wise, if you have *any* interest in the resident evil series, 4 remaster, 7, and 8 are on the mac app store. they have HDR support and oh. my god is it gorgeous on these. honestly, any game that supports macOS and HDR is worth playing on these computers because man is it a treat to the eyes.
I feel ya, I never thought I would buy a macbook but I wanted a laptop that was small, light, quiet, with all day battery life with decent performance... so I got a macbook air m1 on discount. It has served its purpose well and did require an adjustment period but man for a work laptop (im a teacher so nothing too heavy) it works great. I would like a framework but those are also very expensive
I hated on Mac’s in general for the over 25 years. Now that I’m older, I value security and resale value over customization and upgradability. I finally gave it a try and find that it works really well especially since I’m an iPhone user. It’s so convenient and I upgrade ever a couple of years or so since I always get the base value which holds its resale value a lot better.
I got a pretty cheap intel mac just to test the waters, and the window management was hard to get used to. My suggestion is installing Rectangle, you'll have window management and snap thingies working pretty nicely (:
Every so often best buy has been dropping new M2 MacBook air's to around $750! They come with 16gb of ram but the downside is the 256gb ssd. I got this machine a week ago and absolutely love it and ended up getting a 1tb external ssd.
I got an MacBook Pro (2021) 14-inch - Apple M1 Pro 8-core and 14-core GPU - 16GB RAM - SSD 512GB for $879 on Backmarket!!!! Best decision, got tired of Windows laptops unreliability (just kept glitching and breaking down).
Yeah I'm in the same boat as you, I really hate the fact that Apple seems to be the only company making really high quality laptops. I'd even be fine with a not that great battery life and the wonkiness you usually get with a regular laptop + linux but I'd at least like another company to make a laptop with the same build quality as a macbook, that just doesn't seem to exist at all.
I have a base model M1 MacBook Air since 2021. Still runs great and fast enough for me for what I do. But running out of storage. Using an external Thunderbolt 3 enclosure (Acasis) with a 2TB Samsung 990 Evo SSD and it’s as fast as the internal storage!
Welcome to the ecosystem, I also once hated Apple but there's nothing like a MacBook which is so capable in such a small size factor. I bought an m3 pro at a good price but then I swapped it for a binned m3 max for a very good price (for being an Apple product) and man this thing is just simply a war machine. The OS while not being Linux by being Unix like is like feeling at home (so I don't have to deal with that windows garbage) and the raw power which these machines are capable to provide it's just on another level. Btw considering that you're on a m1 series chip, you should definitely check Asahi Linux.
I could never understand how people can use glossy screens and look at reflections all day long. Even looking at it from this video it seems absolutely unbearable to me, no matter how beautiful the colors are. And of course Apple doesn't offer any other type of screen, because Tim Cook decided so or whatever. And no, sticking a screen protector on the screen is not the same as having a proper matte screen. It's the single worst thing about modern Macs for me personally and it makes me think twice before buying one (also the keyboard being pretty terrible compared to a thinkpad keyboard, but I can live with that one).
Ryzen 7840 and HX 370 are almost on par with ARM (including Apple Silicon) in terms of efficiency, can game and don't suffer from compatibility issues. Sure, the sleep issues you refer to are very annoying, but it's not an issue with the chip itself, but with Microsoft who randomly axed S3 and refuse to bring it back. In other words, it's a silly and easily fixable software issue.
See if video editing software was better optimized for CUDA or for CPU rendering the disparity wouldn’t be so bad. Even premiere is way more optimized on Mac not even including Davinci or Final Cut. If all you need is video editing Macs can do it faster, while on the go, and depending how long your edit is, on a single charge not plugged in.
if your issue is Windows sleeping killing battery life - just don't sleep? Set it to hibernate when you shut the lid and boom. Boots up just as fast, everything's still open, consumes no power
with games, i believe people got elden ring working with the game porting tool kit. so you may want to mess with that and see if you can get other window games working. I believe they had elden ring playing 60fps high settings on an air, so your pro would crush it too
“I hate Apple, I don’t love it, but I can’t go back” yeah, that’s how they get you, a fantastic ecosystem that just does what it’s supposed to do, one account that works over everything, you get one and then you find yourself wanting the iPhone or the Apple Watch or an iPad.
Awesome video; It does show that you certainly don't need the latest and greatest if your needs are pretty basic. Though you're definitely braver than I would be, buying used laptops.
Did you ever try using a fine needle or something of that nature to clean lint out of the Pixel 7's charge port? If you haven't, it will improve the reliability of the charging connection exponentially!
Just max the ram and the storage out when u buy, and u dont need to worry about upgrades, and ofc no need to worry about things breaking like the chinapads.
I'd say it shows the state of the windows ecosystem, with Microsoft and their Anti-consumer practices especially in recent times, most vendors following the trends of Apple to a point much like the smartphone market, and the Thinkpad line being sold out to Lenovo with them gradually transforming it into the antithesis of what it stood for.
I'm over here rocking a 16 year old macbook pro from 2009 and it still works fine for me. I have edited 1080p videos in Final Cut Pro X and Photoshopped shitty things in it as-well. I have Microsoft Office 2011 and a modern web browser that has rendering issues. Borderline what are you doing complaining about laptops that are 5-8 times more powerful then my 16 year old mac.
Past hardcore PC user here; I was forced (I mean forced) to use one for work - was converted in 2 months. Next laptop I buy will be an Apple M. The silence is insane! I still think Linux is superior to MacOS, but hardware is next level, hands down.
Honestly I blame laptop manufacturers for not providing tools to make Linux efficient on laptops and Windows for having horrible power management. On the other hand it's incredible how compatible the M chips are given the fact that they are using ARM
about the phone charging issue, you probably just have a bunch of dust and grime stuck in the charging port. I usually clean my charging port every 6 months or so because stuff gets in there so easily. A simple metal needle should do the job really well.
When I start making oodles of money in software development, then I'll consider a macbook. I just can't justify the price for even a used one, no matter how nice they may be. In the meantime, I'll stick with my T470s running Arch. Came fully optioned out, threw in a new 1TB SSD, just replaced both batteries, paid like $230 all in and it works like a dream.
I’ve had a pretty good time with the snapdragon laptops on windows - it’s not as good as the MacBooks but is very similar in the day to day and battery life, and has different compatibility strengths
Also double tap the top border area of a window to full screen it without popping into that separate desktop view - the biggest problem with Macs are all the details that are never explained. Like adding the file path bar to the bottom of a finder window, or making the search bar in a finder window search the current folder* you’re in and not the entire laptop… anyway, there’s for sure a learning curve and some quirkiness but I don’t think I can ever do a non-Mac laptop again …desktops are a different story though 🙃
Man, I got my cheap af 2015 pro 13" and my only gripe is the dual core i5 in this thing, and the lack of ram upgrade but, man you making me want to get an M1 at least haha. I have too many crappy computers, and I have to say Apple is king in the premium realm, nothing competes. If they had upgradeable ram and storage, I would probably sell them my soul.
I have a very loaded 2019 Dell TONS of RAM its solid. I hate using it. Cant text anyone or do anything outside Linux VM. I hate google. Enjoy that Mac and use the shit out of it. Take care of it and it will take care of you. If my old ass unibody Macs still run great i can only imaginbe how long these m1's last
Always buy the base config of a mac because they offer the best value and once you start upgrading components it gets overpriced really quickly. Also, base models go on sale all the time but not the ones that are configured with more ram and storage. Never buy them at the apple store too since they never put their stuff on sale. Always look at other stores like B&H photo, best buy, etc.
It always made me a little sad when you’d throw shade at Macbooks in your thinkpad vids. I love both for different reasons and am excited you decided to give the mac a shot! My first macbook lasted me 10 years. It was a 2009 so a previous gen that you could upgrade ram and storage on. It sucks that apple doesnt ship computers that you can upgrade ram and storage on anymore. Outside of that I have zero complaints about my m2 mac mini. It’s a powerhouse!
Apple silicon's efficiency is the reason why i yearn for ARM-based laptops but i hate Windows 11 so I'm praying Linux support for these matures soon): recent AMD/Intel x86 developments are getting closer in terms of efficiency tho my money's still on x86 making a comeback, the architecture's just too big to let go EDIT: i've solved the whole battery charge-death thing by having my laptop hibernate upon lid close windows sleep (the default on lid close) draws so much power, it's stupid (and also slow asl) the only downside is that if you change out any hardware while hibernating, it'll throw a tantrum but this may as well be the closest emulation of the whole "never shut down" thing of Apple silicon, haha

Man who cares what people think? Get a used M1 pro to mess around with for a couple months. Worst case, it will hardly lose value and you could sell it and go windows.
@aChairLeg fair point but I cannot find any used models. The lowest I would have to spend would be to buy a new m2 air. And changing back to windows so quick is going to raise some complaints from few people in my life. I'm really sorry for this rant but I absolutely do care about what people say though, I should work on that honestly, I have been sort of bullied all my life for my quirks and nerd stuff, at first it was for not having played computer games in childhood and watching anime and now it has changed to being called out for tech and how I like to interact with it is some sort of poor person's or someone who has nothing to do in their life. Idk man, life was simpler when I didn't had all this privileged shit to think about and lose my mind over. I do not mean any disrespect to anyone just wanted to share something that's been on my mind since months
I hate Dells and only use them when thrust upon me by my employer. I used to only buy ThinkPads (used) for my personal laptop use. However, for the last 14 years I've only bought MacBooks - mostly used but a few new. They last forever and Apple will support them with OS updates for a very long time. My personal desktops, on the other hand, are always Windows machines I build myself.
The intel hate is lowkey unwarranted, Intel Macs are actually pretty epic. And allow for much more flexibility with actual dedicated graphics compatibility, it make the capability ceiling much of the machines much higher .
I got over this guy's angst in 1986. I used Macs and PCs both for 26 years. When I retired, I ditched PCs and didn't look back. The value is there. The damned Mac just gets out of the way and lets you get stuff done. There are still things that I would use Windows for, if I needed them, but I don't need them now. My Late 2020 M1 MacBook Air (16GB/1TB/8-8-16 CPU) has worked flawlessly since I got it. It's the best daily driver I ever had. And I had a lot of high powered PCs on my desk before I retired.
I don't join you on that "your thinkpad slows down to a crawl". Because its not a thinkpad thing, its a windows thing. Throw some linux at your t14 and watch it FLY. Sure it wont be as good as a 4 times as expensive mac, but it wont be 4 times worse.
I think you could justify like an Intel Mac mini to save money just because you don't have to care about battery life. You could probably find one these days for like a hundred bucks that was completely servitable and you could cross shop it with a n100 and mini PC or something. I'm not saying it's the choice I would make but that's probably the niche use case were an Intel Mac might still make sense
I think an Intel Mac mini is a hard sell in a lot of situations because M1 Mac minis are so cheap now, And if you’re buying it for something like homelabbing then there’s better mini pcs

The thing about having a charged battery in your previous laptop & then it suddenly being dead in a few hours is a Windows thing as it doesn't let laptops go to sleep properly which causes it to be active all the time even when idling which discharges the battery quickly
update to sequoia, it adds the windows managment thing, and just makes it sooo much better
Or use Magnet. I love its keyboard shortcuts
Programming is kinda untrue. Editing sure.
Never owned MacBook, but looking to buy one. It's amazing performance and build to last.
You can actually change the settings so that the trackpad clicks without pressing! :)
I wanted the macbook build quality and minimal looks while still being able to play. Ended up getting a used Razer Blade with a 3070 for 650 euros and couldn't be happier. Completely understand people going for macbook's though.
If I gamed more on my laptop I would really consider a gaming laptop, but the battery life when not gaming leaves a lot to be desired.
@@aChairLeg that's completely fair, different types of usage. This is my main computer and it's plugged to the wall 90% of the time so its fine for me.
You could get a refurbished MacBook Pro on the official store, and they're basically "good as new" or just used for exposition.
Yep, but the MacBook Pros start at ~$1,500.
i was in the same boat as you only a year ago. it all went downhill when i bought an iphone 15 pro max as my first apple product. do not be like me a year later i've got everything apple related second hand and just bought a used ipad because i wanted to watch netflix on my bed without having to chug my macbook.
do not be like me brother
I got a bottom spec M2 mac mini about two years ago and it has been an awesome content consumption, chatting, and sysadmin machine for me. The trackpad support is so good that even on the desktop I use one of apples bluetooth ones (the first gen that takes AA batteries so it's never gonna "expire" like the current ones do) ((also have a ploopy on order for use with my linux machine at work)).
I realised that a lot of days I didn't actually do anything that demanded my gaming PC and it's just loud and warm for no reason then.
You can change the settings on the trackpad to enable tap-to-click
He seems out of loop ,The fact that he didn’t mention the only freaking trending topic in this year laptop news tells you everything.
Hop into settings and you can turn on your tappy trackpad experience
i couldn't live without gnome
Me neither, so I run Ubuntu 24.04 ARM on UTM on MacOS. Yes, I need to use the x11 session for it to run without random crashes but it works.
@@Nik.leonard thats cool! But honestly i prefer desktops
If windows didn't become such a drag. They even kind fucked up the ARM on Windows launch ... AGAIN!
My 2012 unibody Macbook pros runninf sequoia or sonoma flawlessly still. Open core legacy is amazing. My M1 Max still runs like its new
A few quick UI tips for people new to macOS: 1.
You buds with Luke Miani now? Looking to buy a Volvo too? Yup, we lost him.
Hey! I still drive a Toyota!
The newest macOS gives you window management features or you can install Rectangle to get a bunch of shortcuts and (I believe) drag-to-edge behaviour.
It's the single worst thing about modern Macs for me personally and it makes me think twice before buying one (also the keyboard being pretty terrible compared to a thinkpad keyboard, but I can live with that one).
you can install something like the app rectangle and use shortcuts to make window management even better than it is on windows
I believe they had elden ring playing 60fps high settings on an air, so your pro would crush it too
I want to find that kind of deal on a macbook as well. WOW thats very good.
The M chips truly are magical
Fyi you can find technicians who can solder on high capacity and faster SSDs.
It's a really good package. There are some cons.
but if u can overcome, it really wins u over.
“I hate Apple, I don’t love it, but I can’t go back”
yeah, that’s how they get you, a fantastic ecosystem that just does what it’s supposed to do, one account that works over everything, you get one and then you find yourself wanting the iPhone or the Apple Watch or an iPad.
Awesome video; It does show that you certainly don't need the latest and greatest if your needs are pretty basic. Though you're definitely braver than I would be, buying used laptops.
The Intel MacBooks before 2016 are unbelievably good. Upgradeable storage and capable of running latest MacOS with OpenCore Legacy, Linux, and Linux.
Did you ever try using a fine needle or something of that nature to clean lint out of the Pixel 7's charge port? If you haven't, it will improve the reliability of the charging connection exponentially!
Welcome to the club, you are in a new ecosystem now
Just max the ram and the storage out when u buy, and u dont need to worry about upgrades, and ofc no need to worry about things breaking like the chinapads.
the tap on tachpad can work if you enable it in the settings.
@@DeFi-Macrodosing asahi has come a long way

My used 16” MacBook is glorious
When we can run GNU/Linux without any problems on a Macbook I'll probably buy one.
Asahi LInux:
One of the funniest video on tech I have watched
I’ve had a pretty good time with the snapdragon laptops on windows - it’s not as good as the MacBooks but is very similar in the day to day and battery life, and has different compatibility strengths
I really want to try those soon. Maybe after some of the issues have been ironed out.
Better snap tool will let you maximize apps without going into full screen. You're welcome
If all you do is word processing, get an ibm selectric. The new m4 macbook pros have battery lives over 22 hrs.
I have a very loaded 2019 Dell TONS of RAM its solid. I hate using it. Cant text anyone or do anything outside Linux VM. I hate google. Enjoy that Mac and use the shit out of it. Take care of it and it will take care of you. If my old ass unibody Macs still run great i can only imaginbe how long these m1's last
You can change a setting for tap to click on all M series laptops. I enable it every time I buy a new MacBook.
Usually it’s not the car, it’s the driver.
I make a little fun of everything haha everything has it's flaws
@ yeah for sure lol I know it was to poke fun at :) anyways welcome to the dark side!

Apple silicon's efficiency is the reason why i yearn for ARM-based laptops
but i hate Windows 11 so I'm praying Linux support for these matures soon):
recent AMD/Intel x86 developments are getting closer in terms of efficiency tho
my money's still on x86 making a comeback, the architecture's just too big to let go
EDIT: i've solved the whole battery charge-death thing by having my laptop hibernate upon lid close
windows sleep (the default on lid close) draws so much power, it's stupid (and also slow asl)
the only downside is that if you change out any hardware while hibernating, it'll throw a tantrum
but this may as well be the closest emulation of the whole "never shut down" thing of Apple silicon, haha
If you Fullscreen an app, it creates a new "Space" so that you can swipe between Spaces.
here's hoping framework makes an ARM board
I am still rocking a Thinkpad P71 with 17 inch screen 4k Xeon chip Windows 11 2017 $1500 laptop. never had any repairs or problems.

I’’ torn too. At one point I absolutely hate Apple and it’s customers but on the other I like the battery life claims and build quality. The only reason Im not switching is Gaming which I want to do.
Tbh after buying my iphone and ipad Im way too afraid that I’ll become the same breed of brainwashed Apple consumer which I despise so much. I also have no problems whatsoever with Windows, like I always have a power source at my desk and my line of work is engineering where I don’t need to carry laptops, and I am not someone who edits videos or photos daily on photoshop or premiere pro sitting inside a starbuck, neither do I 3D model. But Im still torn between buying a Mac or a Gaming machine.
Tbh Im just rambling at this point and I realise Im at a privileged spot in my life where I can have such problems, thinking this stuff last year when I didn’t have my job would’ve been wild. But I really cannot escape this feeling or just making a mistake with whatever I buy. If I buy a mac, I will be paranoid of becoming someone I hate or running into stupid problems. If I buy a windows machine, I’ll be paranoid that people will judge me. I cannot escape this dichotomy in my head.
10:47 Bro calm down 💀
I hate Dells and only use them when thrust upon me by my employer.
Another fallen brother😢
The intel hate is lowkey unwarranted, Intel Macs are actually pretty epic. And allow for much more flexibility with actual dedicated graphics compatibility, it make the capability ceiling much of the machines much higher .
Was that headphone wire for the Tangzu Wan'er? If so, great IEM but truly the worst cable of all time. It's worth buying a different cable
"treachery!!!!"
however....

I think an Intel Mac mini is a hard sell in a lot of situations because M1 Mac minis are so cheap now,
And if you’re buying it for something like homelabbing then there’s better mini pcs
