I think your oldest 140 was actually a newer model with an older side plate. The 1894 patent date was on the type 1 140 which had a lever adjustment instead of a knob like yours had.
Robert f Sautters well that's a moot point. Of course LN are better for now, but these are almost a century old. We will see if LN will look this good in 100 years. BTW I have a LN block plane and it's probably my favorite plane!

Nathan, if it has a lever to move the blade in and out instead of a wheel, its a type 1
As treasured as these planes are ,the LN version is much better!!
