    For a little while, at the beginning, I thought "yeah - that's cool, I can do that!" And then he became Simon Phillips...

    I've been to one of his drum clinics. It changed my life. I've been a fan of his for over 45 years. I saw him in concert with Jeff Beck. He's such a pro.

    Learning how to stop, then start again on time is key for a drummer as is phrasing and not overplaying everything.

    Simon Phillips makes intricate drum patterns seem simple and understandable at first...then everything becomes convoluted in his own given time-signature.

    Sound quality at tempo, awesome. Pulsed and drug through the transitions. I love the interpretation of straight 16ths.

    • @robinjohnson6301

      Why?? Just learn the exercise - it's great! Who cares if you can't play it as fast as Simon Phillips? The important thing is to get a good sound out of the drums and play with good time, and the point of this exercise is to help develop those skills. I don't think Simon ever learned this with the intention of being able to play it super fast - the speed is merely a bi-product of him practicing it more many years. I think when he plays it really fast here, it was likely to have been after someone requested him to. So I think really it's a little out of context. I certainly doubt he wanted to use it as a means to show off for the sake of it - he isn't that kind of player.

      Simon Phillips is not the fastest drummer, but he has very even , regular strokes.Known ( among other drummers) for his musical style of play and his tom fills.

      Not really. Many good drummers can do the same. Simon Phillips certainly isn't the fastest. He's known for his regular strokes though.

  • @guntertorfs6486
    @guntertorfs6486 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Transitions is where you can experience the usually better capability of drummers to keep or come back to the overall rhythm and tempo than the other musicians. (from a semi- professional drummer )

  • @EleanorPeterson
    @EleanorPeterson 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I admire Simon's musicianship. His drumming is excellent, but he's not just a technician; he understands song structure and the importance of silence and space.
    Overplaying is a baaaaaaad habit. If you're a professional musician, it's easy to tell when you've lapsed into overplaying by the way that your phone stops ringing. Nobody wants you.
    One of Simon's real strengths is his ability to play the part the music needs and not a single stroke more. All great drummers could/can do it.
    I can't do it...😁

    I can't believe that someone out there ( namely Mike Oniell ) Thinks this guy is a dork. When you have the chops , musicality , ability , Flair and commitment that he has then you can call him a dork.....Somehow I don't think you probably do. Iv'e had the pleasure of meeting him and I can assure you that he's anything but a dork. Get A life and a brain Mike. Sounds like you need one.
