    Hi Fil,
This interview was simply INCREDIBLE! So much to take in about Prince the Man and Prince the Performer! The philosophies and “Rules”he lived and played by! Morris has so much charisma and you can tell how much he admired and loved Prince. Morris is just a delight and a special person in his own right to have worked with Prince so long. You did an amazing job with this interview! Can’t wait for part III …. Have a great night! … Debbie☮️
    RIP Tina Turner🥰

My favourite musicians are the ones who can appreciate and respect the talent of other musicians, regardless of the genre of music they play. I love that when Morris was referencing great musicians and bands that he really admired, his tastes ran the gamut from Parliament-Funkadelic to Marilyn Manson to Foo Fighters to Fleetwood Mac. That's quite an eclectic mix.
He's so interesting to listen to, and has so many great stories. And I think we all appreciate that you ask your questions, then let him have the spotlight. Too many interviewers insist on constantly interrupting and inserting themselves into the interview instead of just letting their guest talk, and getting as much from them as they can. I can't stand late night talk shows for that reason, the hosts all have to make sure that they are the star of every interview they do, instead of letting the guest shine. You are definitely letting Morris shine in this interview.
I was so saddened to hear that Tina Turner had passed today. Another icon gone. 😢

Morris Hayes shared lots of lessons here: Be an ensemble..."Do your li'l things" but wait for the right time...Practice mentally...be a reader and a lifelong learner...Be worth your salt (paying for two hands), and more. Loved the bowling story!
Fil, I think/hope you will have lots of fun chats like this in the coming years. You have the musical and conversational chops, and are respectful and welcoming to your guests.

  • @cindi1313

I love this interview, so many cool things in here! It made me laugh to hear Morris talk about how Prince would say he was paying for both of his hands, what is the other hand doing! And the last minute changes, it sounds like you had to be on your toes at all times to be in Prince's band! It was also really interesting to hear how Prince decided to back off on use of technology once that became more the norm. I do have to disagree with Morris on one thing, Prince's Super Bowl show wasn't "one of the best" of all time, it was THE best, no doubt, no one else even close! When it was pouring down rain during Purple Rain, it was just magical, I can't imagine seeing that in person. Well done, really looking forward to part 3!

Thanks for sharing, Hey Morris, thanks for being here, we love you man. Thinking about prince's vocals, changing in a breath. Did prince warm up his voice? He must have, but nobody has ever said so. And no one has ever mentioned a vocal coach. Morris you really made prince sound great on stage, not that he needed any help. We can hear you all over his concerts, vocally too. I guess that's why he kept you around for a couple of decades. You helped him look good. Not to mention that you're a good man, he could trust. Probably just a few in that category. I absolutely loved the 90's stuff, his best in my opinion. He was on fire when he was dreaming about Mayte, and finally got a taste. We can see he got fired up, comparing to before and after. Of course his heartbreak songs were surperd too. I just love so many of prince's songs. Sometimes his voice sounds like angels from above. You're right his lyrics helps form the imagination of the story.

Liked the direction you steered part 2. A good explainer from M Hayes on how Prince rolled as band leader, advisor, and standards he set for everyone.
Some interesting discussion points on Prince's overall talents overshadowing the skilled guitarist -- with his favorite role was that of a songwriter/lyricist. (unexpected)

What a great part two of the interview with Morris! He KNOWS HIS STUFF! NO IF, ANDS OR BUTS ABOUT IT. That's why he worked with Prince for so long. Prince was a workaholic and perfectionist. He didn't put up with cut rate musicians. Morris referred to a lot of basketball moves. Prince, I believe was a varsity basketball player on his high school team. Charlie Murphy, Eddie Murphy's now deceased brother, has one of the best story telling skits of Prince and The Revolution on the Dave Chapelle show in a game of basketball. I also saw one of the best guitar solos of Prince on TH-cam ever. He switched guitars and he had a female vocalist and a female guitarist on stage, Morris was probably there as well. And Prince went into this... I can't explain it.. as if he was making mad passionate love all night long to his guitar like a lover. He whole heart and soul was engrossed in it an no one else was present. It was like nothing I've seen and I really liked Prince, but never loved Prince, but this was unlike anything ever. I also think I've heard his father was a song writer. Prince used the words that his father wrote and put them to music and put it on album. It's a hit, but I can't think of the name of the song. You all know it. This is an incredible interview. Thank you, Fil and thank you, Morris. ❤❤ AND IF YOU GET A CHANCE... THERE IS INCREDIBLE VINTAGE NEWS FOOTAGE FOUND OF PRINCE RECENTLY BEING INTERVIEWED IN FRONT OF HIS SCHOOL REGARDING FUNDING OF MUSIC. He had a nickname like "SCOOTER" and his former friends and musicians said, "YEAH, THAT'S SCOOTER, SURE IS!" He's like 11 years old or something. And you can also find his high school varsity basketball team picture with long hair. He was REALLY GOOD! ❤ See the Charlie Murphy skit on the Dave Chapelle Show on TH-cam. It's hilarious. AND IT'S A TRUE STORY! Color commentator again.

When Morris talked about how the audience can be hit by the musicianship and the harmonies of the group instead of constant technical prowess it reminded me of fantastic live vesrions of songs like the 2006 Procol Harum version of "A whiter shade of pale" in Denmark or Emerson, Lake and Palmer 1977 version of "Fanfare for the common man" in Montréal while there wasn't any audience! But it still hits today right in the target.

Oh, my gosh! I was watching the David Letterman performance when it originally aired. Honestly scared me. I'd never seen an ending like that with the gunshot and being dragged off stage. The somewhat clueless band (to what he was about to do) made it worse, because the look on their faces was shock, too. Had no idea he did all that so he wouldn't have to shake Letterman's hand! So petty, but brilliantly performed.

I Love how Prince 'talked' musical language in the studio. Miles Davis, who ALSO very much spoke that way -- dropped a few words on Jimi Hendrix when they met, and it went over his head. Miles would do that, to see how 'deep' the level of the musicians were, he was working with, or knew. He learned music theory early on. Jimi, however, was self-taught, and the vernacular didn't apply to him. He worked in patterns, and by feeling.

Excellent interview. Prince was an extraordinary genius, he sure was hard on his musicians. Whatever instruments he learned, he has to master it, really fanatical about his music and his shows. He was music on every level. Genius like that are only once in an era or lifetime. Prince tells his keyboards guy , " Im paying for both hands " thats strict and fanatical! I see why Prince was a phenomenon!

OMG, thank you so much Fil for these interviews, they are amazing!! Wow, what a scoop!! 🥰
I love how Morris was saying that Prince saw his biggest talent as his poetry. I 100% agree. That's partly why people didn't always notice his awesome musical talent too. It was so overlooked by his songwriting and story-telling talent. Which were very unique. You only have to listen to songs to hear his influences eg Housequake and "Green eggs and ham" Dr Seuss line, or the Trans-Mississippi rap, in It's Gonna Be A Beautiful Night. Which is actually an Edward Lear poem called The Table & The Chair. Thank you so much, us Prince fans really appreciate it!!! 💜💜💜

I'm really glad to see guitar experts bringing to light some of Prince's genius. I grew up being a huge fan of him, but seeing him more as an all around musician than a guitar player ( though I was aware of how proficient he was ). So, hearing guitarists say they were unaware makes perfect sense to me. But, it's nice to see him receiving his props from those like you who understand what it takes to have the chops. Great channel!

Also, your comment about how Prince was always sort of promoted as something akin to Micheal Jackson is so apt. That was such a common theme back during the late 80s. I think once most folks get Prince, or fully understand what he was and how he operated, they tend to realize the two weren't really in the same business.

What I would love to hear Fil try is the opening solo to When Doves Cry....I saw some guy do it properly on TH-cam just once and can not find it now.

Threadjack. If you're considering a Tina Turner tribute, consider Proud Mary Live at Wembley (2000)

I've often wondered if Prince had a Deaf family member because why else would he come to Gallaudet to perform a free concert? And he visited BEFORE the Deaf President Now Protests happened!
