I saw a documentary about him. It was fascinating that he could play many instruments well. I think it might have been a true " honour" for the musicians who had the opportunity to play with him. They practiced for many, many hours. Prince worked very hard all the time he was involved in a new project. That what makes him unique. His ability to play, sing, dance and write songs. He was so creative. Unfortunately I could never go to any of his shows, but everytime I watch a whole show or even a single video, I notice something new. Some detail. I do miss him. He is irreplaceable. The most complete artist of all times.
I watch a video when he was practicing with the band. He was at a piano. He play different chords in different keys. He would announce to them the key F, F major, F minor, C, E and just play the chord. He didn’t have any sheets in front of him. He just knew them. The band would shift with him.
Here is the deal, many great artists master their instruments and or voices, but with Prince, he was the master of sound, and to him everything from his voice, what he was playing, the crowd, the set even his dance moves, clothing and look was part of of the effect to the sounds that he created. One gets the impression that when he did play an instrument he got exactly the sound he wanted, and if he couldn't get that sound, he simply moved on to another that gave him precisely the sound he wanted to make. I think he looked at the band and crowd as one big instrument that he played, just to get that sound he wanted. Understanding this is understanding the true genius of Prince.
Funny that we would have a discussion about “ it’s all and only Prince”.... ok that’s true.... up to the part where it’s only prince.... as he absolutely did not write or arrange the horns.... he may certainly have had “ the creative input and control”... and he may have done the final tweak ... but he did not write the horn parts..... how dare I say that?..... because I know the guy who DID write Prince’s horn parts.... period

I saw Prince live for his Gold tour and he had us all under his spell from the moment he came out on the stage on a moving floor. His guitar sound was so big, so full and it just blew me away. Any one who questions his ability on guitar are insane!! I’ve always loved the power of this performance, and I also loved watching Larry Graham marching around with his bass. Speaking of bass, Prince was a great bassist too!
When you watch these do you wish you had seen him live? I do it breaks my heart to think I never will. I can only imagine how great it was in person. I loved him so much but felt I had time to see him. Biggest regret of my life 😭
I saw Prince twice in one night, at his stadium concert then at his after hours gig. He was incredible in both. What you wrote is why I made sure to see Barry Manilow when he performed near me a couple of years ago. Barry is 80 and after missing out on seeing other great performers, I knew I'd better go to his concert. If Paul McCartney tours the UK, I will do my best to go see him too.
I won TIXS to the Musicology Tour on 08/09/2004 and I was such a BIG KID in the nosebleeds and shouted to the top of my lungs throughout the entire show.
So glad you picked this performance to analyse, I've followed Prince since 1983, and I rarely saw him in such a zone than during this song, truly performing with his mind, body and soul here. Thank you.
oh I SO agree with all you said Dave. Prince is very intense here, it makes me think about his relationship with his Mother. Performing with his heart too! 💜🔥
Prince remains by far the best gig I've ever been to. We were miles back from the stage at the O2 in London, and yet at times I could have sworn he was playing just for me. The fun and joy he found in being on stage was just infectious. For a long time after he died it was too painful to listen to his music, but now I'm just glad I'm lucky enough to have shared the planet with a great artist. RIP Prince.
prince always shows how bad are 99,99% of the musicians from today... today they only wanna make money, prince only wanted to make music with a soul...
As you can see,...Prince created his own universe...What a universe it was..... Fortunate enough to have seen him twice. One of the best all- around talented artist of all time, he could do everything at a very high level - Pure genius. He was taken too soon.
One of my great musical performance regrets is not getting to see him live in April of 97...😢... God Rest his soul will never be another like him!!..✌❤🤘
This performance is Epic, i never tire of watching it. RIP Prince, you brought the music to us with all your brilliance, never will be forgotten.💜🎸🎸💜💜🎸🎸👍🏼👍🏼
What he said at the end about Prince hit the nail on the head. Whoever think he is or isn't one of the best guitarists ever is fair enough but to be part of the discussion is insane when you consider how amazing he was vocally, on the piano, on the drums, for his production and his songwriting!!
It's one of my favorite videos. Prince was great. Unique. Perfect. His band is excellent. All the musicians are great and Prince interacts with them a the time. They play in total harmony.
In this video Prince sings very well too. He seems to feel the song as if it was one of his own songs. All his shows are unique in terms of interaction with his band and with the audience. He enjoys teasing the audience in a very friendly way.
Thank you Fil, this is in my Prince collection. The full performance has Sly And Family playing first then this number. You explain well what he created with any number he performed. He arranged it, had his band so rehearse it that they could flip on a dime to the vision of sound he had in that creative brain. He had that charisma that put him up with the best band front person but MORE he knew each instrument. This night really stood out to me, like when he went to Montreaux he was sparking from the electricity he brought in on his funky self. Great job!
The man KNEW how to work an audience...all the while being aware of EVERY note and every move that was happening on that stage, a while never missing a beat! Fantastic band leader....sound man, which he often stopped a performance in order to get the sound right, sound man probably didn't have a job the next morning, lol. ..and/or getting the lighting right..... always employed the best of musicians...amazing bands . Now, if you would please, break down " Prince- Blues Tribute ". Its another live performance at Paisley.. its his cover of Hendrix's Red House...renamed Purple House. Or have you already done it and I just haven't caught up yet, lol?! Thanks so much for this...made me smile listening to you describe perfectly the genius of the man.His evolution was incredible. R.I.P. Prince Rogers Nelson..you are sorely missed! (Side note...the guy on the drums Kirk Johnson, was his friend for many year's and was the one who found him in the elevator after he passed). Sorry I took up so much space, couldnt help myself!
Although Prince is my first musical crush since the 80s, I only discovered this performance some years ago. Pure bliss! I come back to this every now and then and am always blown away. Thank you for your comments Wings, you are so right to the point. A musical genius, not only in control of himself but every member of his band. And he really had the gift to get the best out of everyone with him on stage or studio.
Thank You Fil for showing this .The "backing singer /guitarplayer was Larry Graham on Bass doing the rsponses in the start of this song "Motherless Child "
Prince was so unique, he was an incredible talent, his artistry and skill at playing the guitar and writing the music. it really is a huge loss. He performed live better than so many others.
one of the most underrated guitarist of all time. Prince was a monster composer/writer/musician I meant to put in performer too that's the reason for the edit
I can proudly say that I was in that performance for Spanish Tv (via a radio contest), and in the next day's concert in Madrid. Have to say that he was clearly angry with the sound (we were waiting for a loooong time until he luckily decided to show himself), specially at the beginning. It was great anyway, and you know what, he also spent time during the live performance telling the camera operators where to go. Amazing performance, amazing artist, GOAT, a true legend.
and I almost met him the following night via post- the afterparty on 08/11/2004 and I was so STARSTRUCK and completely MESMERIZED that I couldn't believe it was him, my heart was just pounding at 100mph.....lol.....
Like you said Fil, it's all subjective. For me he was brilliant and genius all at once. My only regret is that I saw him live just three times. Thank you as always for posting Fil.
I once called him the Modern day Mozart. I STILL think he was as good as Mozart. And this is one of my FAVORITE videos of him. Good choice, this one. I wish He and Hendrix would have been alive at the same time...can you IMAGINE the sounds that would come out of those two excellent guitarists TOGETHER?
I must admit that I didn’t pay enough attention to him when he was alive. I was too yound in the eighties, so I got a bit more acquainted with his works around 90/95, and while I liked it, I was not curious enough too really dig into his catalogue. And I put partly the blame on the medias for it: I remember that each time he gave concerts in France, the mainstream media kind of stuck to the same labels : " that other guy from top 50 who has a bunch of hits”, " the eccentric rockstar who sings spicy stuff", " talented but weird guy", " the provocative guy who went onstage in underwear" ( ok, he did this... one year at the beginning of his career). They were endlessly discussing his clothing, hairdoes, stage antics... if not plainly saying that he was maybe half crazy. Almost never put the light on the originality, creativity, musical competencies... Only the most danceable hits were aired on the radio. And when he started to sport a more classical look, and went to jazz, they simplystopped talking about him, like " well, now he went normal, there is nothing to say anymore". It occured me recently that I actually knew only a few titles, and I finally got curious to know why exactly this man was now labelled " musical genius” , while he was presented totally another way back in the day. I decided to listen carefully to each album starting from the first, and it was ”love at first listening”. Oh, the irony! He did everything, absolutely every single genre that I liked. And I ended liking actually more his more less known and strangest songs, than the hits. If only I had been curious enough earlier, if only I had known that the " rockstar” was much more, and a bluesman and a jazzman at heart, I would have tried my best to go at least to one concert. But.. on the other hand, I appreciate much more his work now because I spent actually 40 years building a musical culture in various fields. At 15, I wouldnt have liked songs like Something in the water, Condition of the heart, Temptation, Crystal ball... which are now amongst my favourites. He summarizes almost all styles from the past 80 years, besides being an asskicking singer, guitarist and bassist, and I enjoy this a lot. And interviews convinced me that he wasn’t neither half crazy, nor a weirdo but a clever, sharp minded and funny fellow, unexpectedly soft spoken. Kind of felt bad for him, seeing how big was the misunderstanding, actually.
Prince most certainly was a profound multi-talented artist that knew what he wanted and worked toward achieving the perfect outcome. I like his guitar! Fil, Thank you for all of the information, breakdown and analysis, you say it with such care.
Hey Phil I live in Los Angeles and I’m in the music business and manage many A-level rock artists and wanted to ask you as I’m new to your channel and have you ever done a piece on PRINCEand his solo for while my guitar gently weeps as if so I would love to see that. Feel free to private message me and I will send you my company info and maybe we can communicate further that way as I really like your show big time
So glad you tackled this performance. I discovered it shortly after Prince died, and was struck by all the observations you make. Prince was genius on so many levels (including or especially keyboard), as a performer, arranger, singer. And give credit to the band for being completely locked in to the groove, but still paying close attention to Prince's commands . Of course, you didn't get to play with Prince unless you could follow his orders. Vegas! Vegas!
This stripped down no fancy lights and such,is one of my most favorite performances of P💜Its simple and pure.🎶 His emotion is real and the way he controls every single thing ,from the band with just a look or motion to the audience that are all floating on his purple cloud😘 He has everyone in the palm of his hand from beginning to end. A truly once in a lifetime performer and I was blessed to see him from the beginning.💞 I hope the younger generations learn about him. His funkness, his jazz, blues, Lil bit of rap, rock and pop. HE HAD IT ALL😘 RIP Prince your always in my playlist daily💜🎶🎶☝✌
A longtime friend plays with a local band "Janitor Bob And The Armchair Cowboys" (their "Happy Song" is still in the rotation of many radio stations). They went to Paisley Park to explore possibly recording there, and while they checked things out, a voice came over the paging system and said, "Code Pearl". Immediately almost everyone in the place took down all existing colored decor and changed it to "pearl" colored. Evidently an assistant sensed his mood and called ahead. When he arrived he was very shy and polite, and said "Hi, guys" as they moved out of the way to let him go by. They never actually recorded there because of the cost, but that's a memory forever.
Thank you so much for your reaction. I've seen this video so many times but only after watching your react I noticed at the last bit that Prince made a move with his arm pointing out he wanted to sing alone. Thank you again. Great job!
Prince starting : "You know... There was never any reason to Argue... " For all you can not know, There is a story behind this performance and the complete performance IN this Spanish TV show. There is a reason for his mood here. Prince was at war with Warner, and this program was conducted and hosted by a Warner hired , a singer call Miguel Bose who thought of himself by the way, he was the best in word 😂. The tv show have planned a Prince performance 2 songs and an interview with Prince by Miguel Bose. Prince arrived at the site early to record the program and as always, asked to conduct a 10-minute soundcheck with his musicians. The answer was NO without any reason, surely because of the ego of the host of the show and the Warner war.... What did PRINCE do? After several refusals by the program denying him his logical sound check, he thought about leaving and not recording anything. But it made go so much better. Instead Prince went into his dressing room.... and after a while that the host had him angry for nothing ... The TV show realized that better change mind OR not tv show at all .... Prince was finally able to do his sound check. His reaction? Not give any interviews, not even meet the host of the show and instead give away a big long LIVE performance (35 min ) because of his immense respect for the audience that was there, and all the viewers who would be watching the show on television who were not at fault for anything. Motherless Child was NOT programmed. He just decided to play it. He was hurt by everything that had happened and didn't understand Why. This is why you are watching THIS jewel... Love your reaction and comments. Now you know the context and the real life behind all his performance in this show... And also you have the clue for his mood and his words in the beginnig... Prince was an absolute genius musician and better human being,That song is how he felt again, belittled and mistreated . Just Love this musical jewel, just Real him exposing and giving how he is feeling Through his gift of music. I was working there.
Hi Fil, as you might know by now, I'm a huge Prince fan! This video is one of my absolute favorites, it makes me cry every time. Thank you for featuring Prince several times on your channel.
few like prince live...he drilled his band to be completly aware of his directions he wanted to go... saw one interview with him where he said he learned from watching the best and brought up bruce springsteen as an example
One of the four best recorded tracks in Prince’s history that we know of, who knows what’s in the vault! I am thinking, a duet with me and you if I get to England next year. Yes?
Great analysis and break down on what going on in this performance! what a performance it was! the drum beat stood out throughout this track. without your musical background and knowledge some of the little details would go unnoticed at times. keep Rockin" Fil.
Many who only know Prince from his hits are unaware of his impressive guitar chops. A highly recommended video (which is not available on TH-cam- you have to search for alternative sites) is his jaw-dropping performance of "Fury" from Saturday Night Live. His flawless use of effects and technique are amazing to anyone who has ever played live.
Thanks Fil, always up for Prince, I wish when he was alive he would of let his videos be on youtube, for this generation that did not know what an amazing musician he was/is. I loved all of his music, but a select few like If I was your girlfriend, Housequake, Billy Jack and Adore. These songs are on my all time favorite songs

I’ve always loved the power of this performance, and I also loved watching Larry Graham marching around with his bass. Speaking of bass, Prince was a great bassist too!
He was great @ all instruments he touched....
👍
Yes he was! Nobody had the funk touch he had on a bass. Let's Work is one of the most funky bass lines he ever wrote.
When you watch these do you wish you had seen him live?
I do it breaks my heart to think I never will. I can only imagine how great it was in person.
I loved him so much but felt I had time to see him. Biggest regret of my life 😭
He was the best 💜💜💜💜💜
RIP Prince.
Lovely words 💜💜💜💜
prince always shows how bad are 99,99% of the musicians from today... today they only wanna make money, prince only wanted to make music with a soul...
God Rest his soul will never be another like him!!..✌❤🤘
💜💜💜💜💜💜
Amen.
This performance is Epic, i never tire of watching it. RIP Prince, you brought the music to us with all your brilliance, never will be forgotten.💜🎸🎸💜💜🎸🎸👍🏼👍🏼
Epic and Intense, one of my fav's I too never tire of it. What a great break down too by Wings- thank you! Prince was the total pkg in my world. 💜🔥
indeed

Your face watching him is heavenly. 💜
He could do it all. Amazing artist and performer. You’ve got to do a video on his 2009 performance of Empty Room at Montreux!! Epic 😍
Yeah, that one is insane. What a genius he was
Anbrixx 17 YASSSS!! One of my favorites 😊
What he said at the end about Prince hit the nail on the head. Whoever think he is or isn't one of the best guitarists ever is fair enough but to be part of the discussion is insane when you consider how amazing he was vocally, on the piano, on the drums, for his production and his songwriting!!
In a creative class all by himself. Amazing performer and artist.
I love it when they are having fun they take you along for the ride. You just don't want to leave ever. Transported in good company.
Great job!
Thanks!
Love the flow, love the bluesy sounds, Love the funk, Love his creativity!!!
Love ⚜👑 PRINCE🎶🎶🎵🎵🎵
Thank you.😊👍
Prince. The greatest musician/performer to have ever lived! Thank you for all that you've left us to appreciate and enjoy.
He was so talented. I regret not seeing him live. 🤙🏼💜
Me too!😢
I'm with you on that!
Me3, for sure, Ree!
Me as well, Ree...😢❤
@@loripond1839 Yes! He was so talented 💜💜💜
Well said!
Purple House is one of the most incredible performances I've EVER seen!
No problem!
@@wingsofpegasus Have you done it yet? If so, can I get a link?
I’ve watched this video numerous times.....hot damn....Prince owns this - unbelievable performance!
it's really cool that you are making these videos of Prince. he deserves it. especially with what music has become.
Great analysis of the type of band mastery he exemplified. Complete control of the stage.
the love coming from the audience because of the greatness of the music and just the sheer joy of performing!
Such a special performer. We were so lucky he came along
one of the most underrated guitarist of all time. Prince was a monster composer/writer/musician
I meant to put in performer too that's the reason for the edit
Ohh lovely. Here is a man in total control of his band
Like you said Fil, it's all subjective. For me he was brilliant and genius all at once. My only regret is that I saw him live just three times. Thank you as always for posting Fil.
☆Prince☆ at his ever~lovin' best... nuff said ! 😎🎸 Thank-you Fil !
YES... total control.. Prince was a musical genius.. bar none.
Prince was so good that he made it look easy, I don’t think he ever received the recognition he deserves till now, thanks Fil!
Love that you are really enjoying and appreciating the performance👍
So lucky I got to see this legend twice. Wembley Arena 1990 and London O2 2007. Such a talent
Prince forever in our hearts. Rest in Peace to one of the greatest to ever do it
Prince most certainly was a profound multi-talented artist that knew what he wanted and worked toward achieving the perfect outcome. I like his guitar! Fil, Thank you for all of the information, breakdown and analysis, you say it with such care.
I get a run of all kinds of emotions and chills listening to Prince play guitar. I can see this video hundreds of times and get goosebumps every time.
Just to make sure you find the right video Phil Prince at the beginning says take the lights down low that’s the one you should look for
Hey Phil I live in Los Angeles and I’m in the music business and manage many A-level rock artists and wanted to ask you as I’m new to your channel and have you ever done a piece on PRINCEand his solo for while my guitar gently weeps as if so I would love to see that. Feel free to private message me and I will send you my company info and maybe we can communicate further that way as I really like your show big time
POWERFUL performance and yet so spiritual......
What a a masterful musician and performer he was.
he was not a prince, he was the king
Would love to see you do a review on joy in repetition live from one night alone tour... The after show.
Just awesome, moving, emotionally connective, sensational..
Thank you so much for your reaction. I've seen this video so many times but only after watching your react I noticed at the last bit that Prince made a move with his arm pointing out he wanted to sing alone. Thank you again. Great job!
💖THE KING OF MUSIC!💖♂️💖👀💖🛀💖🎥💖🌟💖🎸💖✍️💖👑💖🐐💖🎤💖🎹💖🏀💖🎷💖🎺💖♀️💖
Wow I had no idea
Simply amazing. Love this performance.
Hi Fil, as you might know by now, I'm a huge Prince fan! This video is one of my absolute favorites, it makes me cry every time. Thank you for featuring Prince several times on your channel.
I absolutely adored Prince. To see him in concert had me breathless...And yes I will always love 💘💘 him!
few like prince live...he drilled his band to be completly aware of his directions he wanted to go... saw one interview with him where he said he learned from watching the best and brought up bruce springsteen as an example
Prince was so awesome live.
One of the four best recorded tracks in Prince’s history that we know of, who knows what’s in the vault! I am thinking, a duet with me and you if I get to England next year. Yes?
He had that pure, pure energy - on top of all his musical talent. What a loss when he died.
Only Prince could pull off that sweater
👍
Oh what the world lost the day he died! Fabulous Fil. Keep them coming 😁
Great analysis and break down on what going on in this performance! what a performance it was! the drum beat stood out throughout this track. without your musical background and knowledge some of the little details would go unnoticed at times. keep Rockin" Fil.
Thanks Drew!
Wish you could provide a link!

I would love him to review Housequake.
Whenever I listen to Prince now, pleasure holds hands with grief.
