Microsoft is becoming like Apple in all the wrong ways. Taking away features like a headphone jack for no reason, and raising the prices, is really not great.

@@MashITTech what’s your opinion of surface pro’s vs Lenovo Yoga’s?
I want a light portable touchscreen ‘tablet’ style device which an iPad functions as, but I want proper USB ports and also the ability to install and run linux distros and you can’t run linux on iPads, I would need a MacBook Air to get USB ports and dualboot linux but then I’m stuck with the keyboard when most of the time I want the convenience of a touchscreen tablet sized device.
The Surface Pro’s and Lenovo Yogas seem the better options?
Neither are specifically ‘linux compatible’ but both with work with linux compatible wifi usb dongles and headphone ports of Bluetooth drivers don’t work with linux etc while the iPad pros seem very limiting
But which one is best value for light multitasking and content/video watching etc?

I was in the same position needing an upgrade on my old laptop, and needed one for work as well as personal. So I needed all the MS software, but nothing cpu intensive. And the SP9 wasn't enough of an upgrade to justify the already high price tag. So I now have the SP8. I also looked at the Macbook Air, and it being not upgradable at all, no touch screen, and possibly not so compatible with MS software, it got pushed aside rather quickly.

This review was the one I was looking for except I would have liked you to test both in Recommended mode, as that is what I use and is the default set on the device. thanks for a nice review. Just have a little feedback, relating to how I would have found it to be more useful towards a more sound purchasing decision, as most of your viewers might be doing just like myself. While all the syn. cpu benchmark scores tell us a bit of the potential performance characteristics of the processor, I think what would be helpful is to actually focus on day to day use cases more, where it really matters. It's similar to buying cars, super sport cars capable of 180mph speeds, vs everyday Corollas that is just fine around town, say in London streets. Where would you actually use that 500hp engine and sticky handling. I'd say it's quite useless. So, back to the tablet, most gamers will be looking elsewhere, and others needing multi-core processing power will be looking for the "h" variant, or "p" for Intel. I would venture to say that most surface pro users are going to be browsing, utilizing MS Office automation software etc.... so does the 9th gen multi-core processor really matter? in every day browsing, powerpoint presentation, will I notice a difference, what about media consumption? using cyberlink dvd software, where the real actual everyday use "really is".... just food for thought.

I was surprised you mentioned that the Surface Pro 8 got dynamic refresh rate with a firmware update. My Surface Pro 8 has the latest firmware and it doesn’t have DRR. The only way I was able to get DDR was by manually installing the Intel display drivers. I was then able to enable it. Interestingly if you try to get an updated display driver through Device Manager, and have the newer Intel driver installed, it will revert back to the original drivers thus removing DDR. I had to again reinstall the Intel drivers using their Intel Driver and Support Assistant app.

    • @lawrencetaylor2474
      @lawrencetaylor2474 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I'd suggest being careful with the Intel drivers as I too used them for a while. The latest updates are using that ARC thing and although the site says it's compatible with the Intel Xe graphics, the latest versions started messing with my machine - causing screen crashes and total lock ups. I finally uninstalled all of that and went back to the MS OEM driver and all the problems went away. The thing about the Intel drivers are that they may not include the OEM specific device updates that MS provides for the Surface and that could potentially cause issues, as it eventually seemed to do to me.

Now bring back the fanless version, the card reader and the headphone jack on the Surface Pro 10 please! My i5 SP5?(The one without a number) is now down to about 60% battery capacity and my 3rd keyboard is hanging on to a thread. But I am seriously leaning at replacing it with a SP7+ still... I'd love the new screen and speakers, and don't really care about the money side of things, but the above is really important to me. But I don't want to buy old tech. Aarrghh!!!

Uh this seems like they cost reduced the 9. If it’s a choice of i7 between the two the 8 seems to be the way to go. I’m biased because I have an 8 and the processor does everything I need it to do. The generations between these two aren’t wide enough to make a tangible difference.

    Pro 8 runs at 1.3ghz at 80 EU i5
    Pro 9 runs at 1.2ghz at 80 EU i5
Difference in ghz is shown by 1fps less but that’s dependent on the game, faster 10 core cpu will perform better in games that need cpu.
Higher end games will see a huge difference. Also get the i7 for those 16 extra EU.
Because 96 EU is a 20 percent increase in execution units.

Headphone jack is enough to sell me on the 8. Wireless headphones have a whole list of negatives for only one positive, and seem mostly intended to rake in more dosh for fat companies who don't like people spending their money on things that last for ever, like a decent set of headphones can.

12th gen Intel has been such a disappointment in the mobile space. the gpu in the Intel 12th is so bad. and the cpu aspect isn't so great. wish there was amd options here. but that said, I find the power management on the Surface Pro 9 much better than the Surface Pro 8. On the sp8, i basically shut down the system rather than put it to sleep because it would drain during sleep. this didn't happen with the sp7 and not with the sp9.

We had the first RT's, right up until the Pro 8 (bulk used were Pro 4's). Disappointed they're still using the Surface Connect Port, which they really should replace with another USB-C and help standardise charging.....not to mention that their chargers are totally over priced (plus the V2 Dock added another £100 to the price over the original Dock). As a business, the other issue was repairs, which only gives you the option to send off in the post, when compared to other manufactures offering next day onsite repair. Don't get me wrong, they're nice bits of kit (I'm typing on my Pro 7), but not fanatically durable over time, which is another reason we're now moving away from them.
