Thank you for teaching me about squash. I didn't know it was fruit. I always thought they were veggies. I knew about summers but not much about winters. Today I'll be doing an acorn squash, thanks to you...
When I steam kabocha squash, the skin is my favourite part! It has a really nice flavour :) Also if you roast butternut squash the skin gets super sweet and yummy! Their skins are totally edible!!!
I have kabocha squash at home and going to make it today... I didnt know what is was called earlier until I stumbled on your video, Thanks so much this was so helpful. We love squashes!!
Thomas can we please have you twice a week? One for kitchen conundrums and another day for your own recipes? Please it would be so interesting to see how you apply your tips to your everyday cooking!
Kabocha skin is edible, kabocha no nimono is a Japanese simmered dish (amazing btw) and you keep the skin on and you also eat the skin. I have also roasted this and fried this every time keeping the skin on and it is very good and delicious.
My father in law gifted me a squash from his garden and I have no idea what it is or what to do with it! This video has been extremely informative and I now know what I'm doing. Thank you!
Hi Thomas, can you possible do a video on shelf life of the winter squash and how to properly store them after purchase. Also, is there a way to tell how fresh a winter squash is in the store?
I decided to dive into squash a couple years ago. Now, I look forward fall to have them. The cheese squash is something I didn’t see here in Montreal. Will definitely try to find some!
So glad you mentioned the fact that it's better to steam the squash instead of boiling it. I always see recipes where they say to boil the squash but I never do. Happy I was right lol
people make cooking winter squash more difficult than it needs to be, also all the recipes make a lower quality end product than the easiest way to cook. just put the squash near heat, the heat can be a fire or an oven. cook it until its tender. in most cases if you cook it long enough and burn the skin it actually makes it better as the flesh caramelizes. after its done cut it in half and salt and butter.
We love Winter Squashes . From Soup to Gnochi, from Pie to Muffins they are amazing. We eat them as filling in Pasta or filling for a Cornish Pasty with it instead of Potatoe. There are so many variations as there are recipes. But the best part is they are cheap, easy to roast and even kids love the sweet flavor.
I microwave my squashes. Stick it with a fork or knife a few times to let the steam out, 20ish minutes in the microwave depending on size and it is fully cooked. Cut it in half, let it cool a bit then the seeds come out easily.
Here's a tip that will improve any pumpkin soup (unless you're a vegetarian) - add a big block of bacon (unsliced, just a slab of it) to the cooking pumpkin and it will impart a delicious boost of flavour to the soup. Take it out (you can eat it, of course) before you blend the soup.
اتمنى عدنا من هاي ثمار اليقطين بالاسواق العراقية 🎃 حتى اخذ بذورها للزراعة 🌱 I wish that we have this pumpkin fruits in iraqi shop 🎃 , To take there seed for planting 🌱
So, I planted some seeds from a Japanese pumpkin and acorn squash. They grew many pure white acorn squash! I have learned that white acorn squash was created in the 1990s….but,some were regular looking Japanese pumpkin and green acorn….then those seeds planted grew some white regular looking pumpkins 🤷♀️ Anyone hear of that, before? Thank you.
Excellent info! I grew Delicata for the first time this year and it did quite well in my garden in the Netherlands (here's a little review of the 7 varieties we grew this year: th-cam.com/video/1X2lEslMAvY/w-d-xo.html) . Every year we try new varieties - I think I'll grow Kabocha next year!
I thought so. I'm not skilled at cooking any squash yet. I've been experimenting on how to cook them, like acorn squash. Lol First time sucked, but I ate it anyways since I hate wasting food.
We've always eaten kabocha skin. It turns really nice and tender when you cook it, a similar quality as the flesh of the squash itself.
same here! I eat most squash skins tbh. They taste fine, but some are more tough.
Your cut on that Butternut squash was perfection.

Butternut squash is amazing if you roast it in cubes with red onions, corned beef, and other root vegetables like potatoes and turnips

The most useful squash/gourd video I could find
Love these kinds of vids! You should do one for onions and potato. I love that you talk about of some less known varieties of foods.
Thomas can we please have you twice a week? One for kitchen conundrums and another day for your own recipes? Please it would be so interesting to see how you apply your tips to your everyday cooking!
Butternut squash sliced (with the skin on), and friend in bacon grease. Absolutely the best way to eat it.

Wish your You Tube video series came back Thomas!
Thank you Thomas,you taught me a lot,and you’re a great speaker.
Love the Delicata squash!! It's so sweet and tender and delicious! It's just so small with a small amount of flesh compared to other squashes.
My father in law gifted me a squash from his garden and I have no idea what it is or what to do with it! This video has been extremely informative and I now know what I'm doing. Thank you!
So happy to see this in my feed
This was SO helpful, I can’t tell you. Great guide on winter squash
Hi Thomas, can you possible do a video on shelf life of the winter squash and how to properly store them after purchase. Also, is there a way to tell how fresh a winter squash is in the store?

Great video, thank you handsome man.
A part two squash recipe video would be great.
Great video!
This was very informative, thanks for all the good suggestions! I have been scared to cook any of these types of squashes for lack of trying them.
kabocha squash skins are edible!
Great video!! Hugly in love with pumpkins 😍
Love this guy, platonicly, of course...
I microwave my squashes. Stick it with a fork or knife a few times to let the steam out, 20ish minutes in the microwave depending on size and it is fully cooked. Cut it in half, let it cool a bit then the seeds come out easily.
Yo kabocha skin is totally 100% edible!!! And the seeds too!
Yansquared I don't eat the skin but kabocha is delicious
I was about to say that too. It totally is. I had it as part of banchan.
yup! just wash the skin well and it should be fine. I like steaming my danhobak(korean) :)
Yup! We Filipinos call it "kalabasa", and when they're stewed long enough like in pinakbet or even a malunggay stew, the skin can be just as tender.
Chinese stews often use cubed kabocha, skin and all!
We eat all of the skins and roast all of them, except for the spaghetti squash.
Thank you
Very helpful 👌
Love it thanks! Can you please do a butternut squash ravioli or spinach... with finishing sauce💓
Thanks, very informative video. I am facing an acorn squash now, and know what to do.
pumpkins are really great if you add it to beans, Caribbean style (Cuban, Dominican or Puertorican style).
Delicata and kabocha are the sweetest. Kabocha is drier and I prefer that to mushy. The acorn one is really mushy.
I sometimes eat butternut squash skin. It's not too tough if you cook it well.
Musqué de Provence ??? And San Marino ??😩😩😩
I wanna make a soup adding a little of each one
Miranda Priestly ask your personal assistant to make you one lol
Ooooh that sounds so good
Love your videos! Could you make more videos about how to pick out vegetables and fruits?? Would appreciate that :)
Great info!
You can make kabocha tempura. Just cut it (with the skin) into slices about 1/4 inch thick, dip it in tempura batter, and fry it for a few minutes.
awesome guide, thanks
You can eat the kabocha squash skin. It is delicious.
#kitchenconundrums
I'd love to see a video about the types of materials and best uses for cutting boards and mortar and pestles!!!
How long and at what temperature should you roast the squash?
Kabocha skin is totally edible. Ate tons of it when I lived in Japan. My favorite squash by far.
Ive been hearing people say kabocha skin IS Edible tho??
The skin to Kabocha squash IS edible!
How do you remove the hard skin from the winter squash varieties. Before roasting/steaming or after?
Which one is best for desserts? Thank you
Honeynuts or pie pumpkins imo
My fav is the last one he sliced opened.
Great video. Lot of good info
Thank you for the great explanation!

You can eat the skin on kabocha squash, just wash it before preparing
You forgot buttercup squash! Or is that the same as kabocha? Cuz they look identical, actually.
Could you use the inedible peelings for something else? Like would it have an effect in something like a stock?

#kitchenconundrums can you show how to make rich tomato soup?
The pumpkin if wan to be puree need steam or or boil it will do?
See Shun Beng, either way works. Steam keeps more healthy vitamins in the squash, but if you boil, you can use that water to start soup.
I find you get more flavour if you roast it.
good review on a bunch of confusing veggies. Personally, I just want to know what I could put in the frying pan and not bake in the oven.
Hehehe butternut looks like .. a banjo
Asian squashes and spikes squashes like winter squashes and all round squash mb and Mississippi bottle gourd and snake ground? White
You can eat the skin of the butternut squash
Mr. Thomas has beautiful hands. No wonder camera stay close-up on his hands...
you shouldn't perpetuate the idea that misshaped produce is not just as good as perfectly shaped produce
👍👍👍
Kabocha squash skin is definitely edible bro...
Delicata squash don't keep as long as other winter squashes, that's why they are more prevalent at farmer's markets.
Hi. Love this. Which squash would have the lowest carbs, starch & fiber?
Delicata squash..... available at Trader Joe's
Cushaw squash
My taste buds can no longer handle squash except for delicatas.
You call it squash i call it pumpkin.
#squashfam
Can you please put a video of making a perfect mayonnaise

Herbaceous Fruits
True Fruits
Vegetable Fruits
and Vegetables are four different things.
So, I guess, what you really are saying is ... I should just cook every squash?
lol You don't cut spaghetti squash length man.....
He looks like Armie Hammer's twin.
well... the butternut squash.... ehmm well at least the name got it right.. butterNUT
I love squash, but those seeds and holes in that first butternut squash he cut open at 1:30 is giving me a little trypophobia. Agh!
1:37
why you discriminate against curved ones, lol
I don't. Those are my favorite 😏
Winter squash skins are actually edible, don't waste food.
I thought so.
