It seems like an interpretation of people with paranoia or obsessive disorders who believe that something is after them. Overzealousness in locking things, obsessive habits (overwatering the plant) constantly imagining bad case scenarios (like your house burning down) etc. In the end her paranoia reached its peak, and she killed herself. “The birdie” represented a coming end, an end that finally did come when she pulled the trigger.
I think, despite the seemingly deep interpretations, the game itself is actually not as deep. It is what it is. The reality began to disappear, and she ran away with someone, yet still disappear.
@@kanatahiba That completely erases any purpose of even playing the game. There's no survival element. The whole point is to piece together a puzzle and get a story out of it, not just take everything at face value and waste time.
Ah, so it's kind of like how I used to write essays. Professor: What is the point/thesis of this essay? Me: Pfft, I dunno. I just want a grade. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
oh man this one brings back memories. i remember trying to do many things differently just to see all the changes it'd make around the house at different times, like trying to get the access card before the fire breaks out. i also remember suspecting that the number of steps you take in addition to how much time you waste triggers the subtle-to-obvious environmental changes: the furniture in the dining room disappearing; the paintings in the hallway going blank, the continents on world map slowly being 'infected' (i say infected just because of the sample you can check in the microscope, which changes over time) and also the water turning red. if i recall correctly, it's even possible not to start the fire at all. is it possible to meet birdie before being told to kill it? who knows! not even kan gao knows! as for theories, i remember hearing how some people think it might have something to do with the bird flu pandemic. i forget what i came up with. but i'm super eager to see manly play the to the moon series, and also see myself becoming emotionally invested all over again
I liked hearing your theories at the end. Here are a few things I noticed. There was an overall theme of futility to the story. For example, you keep watering and watering the plant and it seems to do nothing. You use keys to open drawers and it only seems to lead to more keys. Things also start disappearing little by little until there’s nothing left. So my interpretation is that this is more or less an allegory for the drawl of daily life. We do all these things in our day to day lives, and even when we think they don’t have significance, they might end up having it in the end. I think that kind of ties in with the theme of the game maker’s making this more “ambiguous” because that’s really what life is. We determine the meaning for ourselves. Whether we believe we had an impact in the end is up to us to decide. (I’m not sure what’s up with the bird, personally I think it might be a metaphor for a plane since there is a running theme of travel and world maps in the game. Also, this is a bit of a spoiler, but the second she got that pistol I pretty much knew there were only a few ways this could go, so seeing the bird still flying at the end pretty much confirmed what she did, at least for me)
Ooooh, I did not expect to see this in my feed tonight. It's a very interesting experience, but above all it's sweet to observe Kan Gao's first attempts at games -- I recommend also taking a look at "Do You Remember my Lullaby?"; the game where Kan first used his "make people cry uncontrollably" power.
Like 8 years ago I heard this theory that the bird represented the plague and this game is about trying her survival and sacrifice to find a cure. Feels really weird thinking about it with today’s context
wait- are you the same person who made a quotev book where it explained that the bird might be the plague while Leah was a scientist trying to find a cure and ended up dying by the plague after she had found a cure of it?
Yeah, it makes sense. The world map slowly has the continents disappear, showing that the disease spreads. And since the bird landed on water, it might've been a water-borne illness.
_So wonderful to see this game again thru fresh eyes_ There are so many interpretations of what the game means. Could the bird be world peace & that is why it "lies" because we never really achieved it? That was what I thought way back & that is why Leah couldn't take the visions of the sky turning red & the world map shrank from showing the whole world down to just Africa, tho they have also had their share of war & conflict. There were theories about it being an illness of hers with a gradual loss of memory. We'll never know, but the game was so wonderful in making us think about it so much. So glad you played & really looking forward to you playing _To The Moon._

There will be a weird menu "continue?" and when you click it, it'll start off with pacman and weird dialogue
I don't remember how I got that but when I try to play again that sequence is gone and just start a new game
The birdies work for the bourgeoise...
I could have sworn Manly already played this years ago.
while i kniw this isnt a horror game, i cand help but expect a jumpscare every 5 seconds
Would love to see you do a playthrough of the 'Project Moon' series!
From the creator of To the Moon. Now you have my full attention.
Manly: don't give me another key!
Gets pistol instead
Manly: oh thank god
Me: you mean "ohno" right?
And then the twist: the pistol is used... to open a door.
If this is not an RPG Maker Game, I will eat my shoes, it TOTALLY looks like one.
All these years since I played this game and I still have no idea what the fuck this was about
I honestly love this game and it was the first rpg maker type game I've been exposed to, after that my life has never been the same.
still haven't seen to the moon tho, I'll be looking forward for manly's gameplay of it tho ^^
