    The game is set in the traditional finnish juhannus-setting. It's celebrated in june as a celebration of midsummer.
    They thought it would give them good luck in getting married and the fields would have a larger yield. It was also believed that ghosts and spirits would rise to haunt during the event, hence the paranormal setting. And the bullying part was just to teach humility back in the days, "hunsvotti" is a badly behaving child or young adult.
    Now juhannus mostly an additional holiday and an excuse to get hammered

    • @BingoBangoBongo2903
      @BingoBangoBongo2903 2 ปีที่แล้ว +589

      @@SadMoribund "Perkele" is a name for the devil. It was previously a name for a god of thunder in finnish mythology, but once christianity spread to finland, it started to change its meaning to the devil. The big horned guy is overexaggeration of a spell practiced in the old days.

      There are allegedly around 6.5 millions Finns, right? That's out of 7.125 billion humans. That means Finns make up 0.0912% of the planet.
      Thats not 9%---that's point zero nine percent, less than a percent.
      To put it another way, 99.9% of the planet are not Finns. How do we know this? Government censuses.
      Now, the best government censuses have a margin of error of at least 1%. So Finns make up 0.0912% of the planet, plus or minus one percent
      In conclusion: there is a 50/50 chance Finland doesn't exist.

    It's accurate to the traditional Finnish celebrations of Juhannus/Midsummer's. Definitely a commentary on their own people LOL but well done game and a fun video! What was interesting to me is the flag is at half-mast at the end when you're done killing everyone - to this day that's a sign of mourning. When someone has passed away the flag is flown half-mast at their house. This is done at houses of all sizes, even at apartment buildings. You did good on trying to pronounce the Finnish words and names! It's not easy :)

      @UCS3kVtqWqMdhBzwQZMRaxIw Of course there's racism in Finland, and there is some deeply rooted racism here coming from the othering of strangers. I wouldn't say it's only towards black people, but rather immigrants in general and the Romani. We have immigration from various African countries and Middle East due to the warzones/unrest in those countries. Of course we've also had people coming from Ukraine, but the general attitude towards Ukranian immigrants has been a lot more open.
      Bigger cities are more diverse and I'd say accepting of different people, but if you go into some tiny ass town in the middle of nowhere, people are gonna look at you weird no matter of your skin colour.

    Long time finnish fan here, how weird hearing the dialogue first in finnish and then again in english :DDD What a great game.
    If ya want long rambling abt the finnishness, here ya go. :)
    In finnish we only have one place for emphasis, the first syllable. So hunsVOTti is close, HUNSvotti is correct :D
    MustaJaakko was basically perfect.
    Yes this 7 flowers thing is one of the midsummer magics, although I think the flowers needed to be different types?
    And I guess being tough and mean is a necessary for surviving the winter here, so yea... Feelings are excess. Also hugs and kisses are very intimate, and you say "love you" only if it's romantic love.
    Yes beer or "kalja/olut" is very important to this day. And getting drunk during juhannus too, every year they report how many ppl drunkenly drowned, a cold weather during juhannus means less deaths bc of less ppl drunkenly swimming.
    The breadthrowing is new to me.
    The pig thing was... Weird. :D
    To this day we do slap ourself in sauna with branches, it stimulates bloodcirculation and smells nice. You can get ones made from felt if you dont have access to branches. Also yes you gotta saunoa during juhannus. Thanks for reading and playing! :)

    It is kinda accurate that finnish people are more reserved about personal problems altho it has changed over the years. We usually have personal boundaries even irl. Heck it became an inside joke that covid social distancing rules were always a thing even before covid.
    Juhannus is a pretty big thing in finnish traditions and while you don't beat people to deatb during Juhannus it is believed that summer is the best time for marriages. We also have this tradition of burning huge piles of woods and tying trees next to our doorways.
    Also yeah saunas and lakes are popular throughtout the years no matter if it is a searing summer or snowy winter.
    We also have Juhannus Kokko which is like a huge bonfire we burn on midsummmer altho city people don't really dwell on traditions.

    I like how when the protag goes on a rampage he kills people in a different ways with different hand movements.
    When he snaps his fingers, the person's head comes off, when he spreads them, the person is dismembered and when he curls them into a fist, so does the person. Nice detail.

    I've read that the boy's true love is Perkele (demon) because his hair is black. And that's why they all bully him (like everyone else is blonde), and his mother also had black hair (the guy disguised wore black hair), and that's why they defecated on her grave.

    Some vocabulary involved:
    Hunsvotti, "up to no-good"/vagabond.
    Paska, "shit"
    Ruis: "Rye(this case ryebread)" -linko: "Sling".. = Ruislinko: ???, I dunno, but looks dope.
    And as for Manly's-question:
    I am highly tempted to say; this looks like our extented family's last midsummer-fest.. But in a way it actually might end up being too accurate for some.. Since there has always been at least an undercurrent of 'pushing through with gritted teeth', which in finnish is embodied by one word: 'Sisu'.. And this behavior which pretty much peaks in times of cultural holidays.. Most notably the 'Juhannus'/a.k.a Summer Solstice, a.k.a 'mid-summer fest', other one I would throw in would be 'Vappu'( "workers' vacation"). And both have lots of drinking and 'saunomista'(verb. use a sauna) involved.. These might not sound too bad, but when paired up with 'sisu',(which some also conclude to mean, weakness can be smacked out of you with a fist (-By wielding or receiving..) ..although, these behaviours are not exclusively finnish..) ..But you probably detect the recipe for disaster.
    Of course these sort of gatherings depicted in-game are from a different time.. And what one could call the 'Juhannus'-phenomenon has been dialed up & over eleven. And even though you do not have to go as far back as 1888 to have seen something reminiscent of this.. I for one have not once in real life seen anyone don the traditional finnish attire.. But there still are some reminders of times past.. F.ex: The 'ritual' you're taking part in, gathering flowers and looking down a well, has been referenced throughout my childhood in children shows, most notably Muumit/Mumin/Moomin.. in which it is more illustrated to be performed by maidens, whom first must collect 7 different flowers.. Twirl around, and walk backwards toward a well, and when you bump up against the well, twirl back around and look down.. you're supposed to see your future spouse. (DARKNESS, DUN-DUN-DUHG)
    Also; 5-stars and a parrot-sticker to all whom finished this train-of-thought of questionable quality.

    A Finn here xD It's largely embellished though, we're not.. THAT grim :D At least I don't think so. But also I do recognize a lot of finnish attitudes in this. And well, since this is obviously set in like early 1900's the setting is very old. In very small villages people can be pretty narrowminded though and it's annoying when everyone knows everyone. But I think that goes for any place really x)

    Because the story is happening in 1888 Finland the things to do in Juhannus are kind of old in this. Mosty the drinking and going to sauna are still things to do on Juhannus, but some Finnish people do those things on normal days too. As a Finnish person, the voice acting in this was the best part for me! 🤣👍

    For the bad ending topic, I always feel the satisfaction of putting the good ending last than getting it first. Especially for those games that have awful or heavy bad ends, but yah.. That's just what I feel about it...
    The game has good enemies, the AI I mean. I also like the chases when the screen turned black and white...

    Half the charm of this channel is watching the objective discovery of a game that's new to me, a game I would never play, and the other half is watching the Let's Player react to that experience. What a fun example of both!

    Surprisingly really enjoyed this one! I like to learn about different cultures celebrations, holidays, etc I thought the art style was well done, the creatures were creepy even the people... Almost as though you were in a fever dream that made a little more sense. Idk how to describe it... Ty for playing this, Manly :)
    Btw I don't mind if you get through the bad ending first you do playthroughs so well I don't even notice.

  • @VelhoTeste
    @VelhoTeste 2 ปีที่แล้ว +47

    I tell you, Finnish fever dreams are on completely different level of "WTFness?". I genuinely couldn't understand much of the game beyond "oh, the MC is being bullied by the villagers because he has dark hair and he 'sacrifices' flowers to a devil so he can gain dark powers and get revenge on the asshole villagers".
    ...them again as a South American i might just be missing the cultural familiarity that comes with the themes of the game such as the rituals and entities portrayed in there. Finnish viewers are more than welcome to point out to me which of these are right.

      I'm not Finnish. So I can understand how difficult it can be in making the appropriate connections within a different culture. That said, I usually take these at face value and enjoy what I can from them.

      The game states that throwing seven flowers down a well will grant you a vison of your true love. The protag's true love seems to be the Devil himself.

    • @Buglin_Burger7878
      @Buglin_Burger7878 2 ปีที่แล้ว +38

      I think part of it is pieces of information didn't connect when you looked at it.
      The protagonist is a weak sick kid who's birth resulted in the death of his mother and is a burden to everyone in the village. The scarecrow inspection speaks about black hair being viewed as a negative trait, one of those which the protag has.
      He is basically viewed as a plague.
      With the entire "demon" bit it follows a relatively common belief. A innocent treated as a monster eventually becomes the monster. The kid is a "monster" forsaken by the good so it makes sense he'd turn to the bad literally/metaphorically.
