2014 Subaru Impreza - POV Winter Drive Review & Reliability

  • Is a 2014 Subaru Impreza a good used car decision? Having this one from new, common Subaru faults like head gaskets and excessive oil consumption have already occurred well under 70k miles along with a few other gremlins.
    Though when it works, it all works quite well and still is a great option for wet and snowy climates.

    I believe that the 12-16 Impreza uses electric power steering. It is the wrx/sti that uses hydraulic power steering

    • @Allcarnews

      i believe you are correct actually! The motor should be mounted on the steering rack i believe aiding in the handling part. Not sure what they did with the new models because the steering is so light it’s honestly a turn away

    Thanks! I’m looking at an Impreza sport limited right now and you’ve taught me a bit of what I wanted to learn.
    I’ve bern driving BMWs only since 1975. Now that I’m ancient meat, and a senior pauper, I need something more frugal. I used to run a BMW shop and was lead tech. I can’t afford the Bimmer cause mow I have to pay my replacement for labor,… it breaks the relationship.
    I like Subaru’s politics and their belief in dogs. And the Impreza is my style. Speed mean little after a lifetime if building, owning and driving rockets ships in the street and track.
    By the way, you do realize that Subaru spelled backwards is U R A Bus, yes?
    Thanks for the thorough going over.! 💋

      Allcarnews would you say the cabin noise is comparable to other compact cars of the same year? I plan on getting one of this generation and I have seen many people complaining about the cabin noise.

    • @Allcarnews
      @Allcarnews  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@xnopyt13 I honestly think cabin noise in something like a civic or corolla is the same if not louder. In the impreza, i would say it’s more of wind noise at high speeds vs loud cabin noise though it’s on par and common in this class of car. Most of the noise comes from near the front mirrors at speed and highway related stuff.

    Im sorry you had any many issues with your '14 Impreza, I had 2 wheel bearings fixed on mine and the CVT issue fixed that they extended the warranty on, had the recall on brake lock sensor fixed before I ever had an issue. But mine has never let me down or left me stranded and Im at 172K... Do keep up with your oil changes every 5K, CVT & Diff Fluids every 30K and Coolant every 100K, PCV valve every 30-50K and its happy, Brake flushes are good. They are a good car, My second Subaru I notice you may have issues in the first 100K but it becomes more reliable as you go on. Just wish they would stop having issues just outside of warranty like tiger wheel bearings. Oh I had a muffler hanger bracket rush at 50K Subaru fixed it cause it wasn't normal.

    The paddles are useful if you live on the west coast or just in the mountains because when your going uphill you can hold it in a gear instead of the cvt always trying to find the best rpm and it gets annoying. Also when you are going downhill it’s puts less stress on the brakes when you use the “gears” to slow the car or keep it at a certain speed.

    • @Allcarnews
      @Allcarnews  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Definitely! It is a bit more clear with the current CVT’s as they are more designed to mimic a 7 speed auto gearbox but the manual mode on this one actually does hep in situations

  • @Denspion

    I have this exact one, but the 5 speed manual, it is loud as hell in terms of noise for sure, what tires do you have? seems a bit quieter than mine, my tires are very low profile.

      It is very unusual for this one as we have a 2013 crosstrek that has had 0 of these issues (111k miles) as the impreza and they are whiter literally the identical car just one is raised off the ground! We seem to have gotten a bad egg 😂! Otherwise they are generally reliable.

    Great video and insight! I’m in the market for one of these to replace my 98 (!) Impreza Outback Sport but worry about head gaskets / reliability. I can’t afford lower than 80-90k miles. What did that work run, if you don’t mind?

    • @Allcarnews
      @Allcarnews  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      From doing research stay clear of the 2012-2015 models as they seem to be the ones with the head gasket issue if at all for some reason ! General reliability has been pretty good other than various minor gremlins on ours. Expect, as a subaru owner you should know already, frequent oil changes and things like axel boots/ half shafts to be replaced, wheel bearings as well as normal tires and break wear. For us we have had no CVT issues though i’ve seen people have some. The head gasket problem was partially covered by subaru of america so don’t have exact data on it but it was well north of $1,500 at the dealer as it’s an engine out job.

  • @davidbarnette1561

    How is it not a bad car if you had to do a head gasket at less than 70k?

    • @Allcarnews
      @Allcarnews  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      it’s great when it works 😅 Need to make an update video actually because i would say 4-6 months after that… just more and more issues. Mostly are technically “expceted” but it has been A LOT. Just last month some seal and other thing had to be replaced in the differential upfront which is blended into the transmission so the drivetrain had to be dropped again. Thankfully Subaru of America has been incredibly greatful covering some costs and throwing in gifts , but still. None of this is what you expect with a Subaru. But it is unfortunate as we also have a XV Crosstrek from 2013 and it has relatively been ok as well as many other family Subaru’s all going strong for years. It’s a love/hate relationship with this Impreza. When it works, it’s 👌🏽 (other than the sun 150HP) but just creeping up to that 100k mile mark things start GOING. The whole head gasket blowing was unusual at that mileage even the dealer was confused and that when Subaru stepped in to help thankfully. Otherwise it drives great for a car in this class, is super super good in the snow, does decent MPG and can haul a lot.

      Strange? Ours drove fantastic, never will find a car like that again. But we must have had a lemon or something. The engine was a disaster every few months. Head gaskets failed TWICE. Constant excessive oil consumption, components constantly failing.
