  • In this video we will walk you through the first step in repair for the 24-speed powershift transmission in the Massey Ferguson 2000 series. This includes the 2675, 2705, 2745, 2775, and 2805. Using a 1979 Massey Ferguson 2705 as an example. Each step is covered, from tractor disassembly to an initial look at the powershift internal mechanisms. Reassembly and some repair best practices will be included with a Part 2 uploaded at a later date so be sure to subscribe!

I look forward to the other videos , these tractors are older than me but I hope to get mine fixed , we went to back up to hook up to a grain cart this summer and the engine labored like the brakes were set. I know enough about these things that I assume I have two clutch packs trying to engage , of the tractor is in neutral and you run the powershift through the gears the engine labors. I like these tractors , unfortunately I've only had mine 2 years before this happened and it was supposedly rebuilt recently, it's a shame they had so many issues with this transmission.

I have a 2705 with the same issue. In addition, the tractor won't go into reverse once it is warmed up.
I love the tractor because it is just like the MF1135 my dad used to have, except for the 24-speed transmission.
I have been looking for a quick fix, but I think the tractor will need split. Sadly, my shop isn't big enough so I will probably end up having the Massey dealer do it. Lots of $$$$$!

@@greenhillgarage If your tractor will not engage reverse, that indicates that the Low Range will also be unavailable, since both of these use the same clutch pack.
And yes, you or a more experienced individual will indeed have to remove and strip down the Speedshift Unit to repair it.
With the whole assembly out, it would make sense to replace any item not up to scratch, like the rotor and stator plates of the various clutch packs and the multiple 'O'rings of various sizes..
Of paramount importance however, is the method of reinstalling the new 'O' rings - they require a lot of lubrication as they will inevitably twist upon installation
. Do not do what they do in the video with regards getting the twist out of the 'O' ring using a screwdriver - that's just asking for trouble using that sharp metallic edge to fish the ring out of the groove. Instead, before installing the 'O' ring, place the screwdriver anywhere inside the 'O' ring, then install it, as I said with copious amounts of oil. Then slide the screwdriver side ways around the 'O' ring to get the inevitable twist out of it. Moving the screwdriver sideways ensures that the 'O' ring only comes into contact with the round portion of the screwdriver, and not the sides or end of the actual blade portion, which will damage the 'O' ring.
You don't want to have to do a job this involved, twice !

Not many people sharing Massey repairs! Keep up the good work! Thanks for sharing. Does Agco or aftermarket still make power shift parts?

Had a mf 1130 traded for 1135 nice tractor! Then got a 2705 had to split tractor twice because of this problem!! the power shift was a bad idea!

had the intermediate clutch plate break in 3 pieces...the trust bearing bearing ended up falling apart and had to split it...forward reverse gears were worn bad...some parts aren't carried or produced any more

This assembly you have removed, is it like a multipower unit? ie. a clutchless down or upshift able to be used in any forward gear. I did my MF training in Australia in the 70s. mostly in the sugar cane industry in central Queensland. At that time there were 1085s and 1135s and an occasional 1155. Most farmers used 165 to 188 tractors though.

It is a shift on the go assembly. There are three ranges in every gear (not including reverse) that you can shift while moving.

It is possible to delete the troublesome powershit and run it as an 8 speed. Back in the 80s I saw a 2745 with 20000 hours. Nearly all those hours were after the powershift delete.

Transmission Conversion Kits were offered to take the number of ratios from 24 to 8.
2 different kits were required depending on whether your tractor was a 6 cylinder or a V8 engined machine.
Reason being is that the gearbox input shafts were slightly different between the two engine types.

Where are you able to find parts for the 2000 series tractor. I have the V-8 version with a weak 3 speed power shift. I parked it because I could not find parts

Massey still supplies wear parts( seals and clutch discs for all three clutches)

I've got some questions for you on a 2675 and 2705. No reverse on the 2675 and intermediate is weak on the 2705. Would like to chat if possible

If you have no Reverse available, it is very likely that you won't be able to engage Low Range either, since both are actuated by the same clutch.
You will have to remove the whole Speedshift Unit in order to repair it. Would be wise to repair the whole thing when it's out, rather than just a single section of it. Repair Kit 837 811 M91 and Service Bulletin TR 91-09 were both issued March 1991.
Troubleshooting Guide for the Speedshift Unit Publication 1448-646-M1.
Unusual to hear of Intermediate Range not being available on your MF 2705, since this is usually the most reliable of the 3 Ranges.
Reason being, it's the only Range actuated mechanically, via large Belleville Springs, rather than hydraulic clutches, as is the case with the other two Ranges.
Perhaps said springs have given up the ghost ? Only way to find out is remove the Speedshift Unit and investigate further.
As with your other tractor, best to replace all suspect parts whilst you're in there, paying particular attention to the method of installing the new 'O' rings.
Plenty of oil to help them slip and not get twisted during installation - if they do inevitably become twisted, do NOT use the blade end of a screwdriver to fish back out of the groove - put the screwdriver anywhere inside the 'O' ring before installing the rest of it, then move the screw driver slowly around the 'O' ring to get the twist out, ensuring the ring only makes contact with the round portion of the screwdriver, not the edge or tip, as this will cut into the ring.
Also don't stretch the rings unduly, or they will not seal their respective compartments properly.
It has been reported that some Speedshift Units failed in such a manner that it was entirely possible to engage High and Low Range together or sometimes Reverse - you can guess the outcome !
To the best of my knowledge, the key failure was the method of installation of the 'O' rings at the factory. A revised method of instsllation was instigated after S/No; 12,000, which equated to the latter part of 1981.
