Kyotaro Yanagiya: Grim Reaper Rakugo performance English subtitles
Part of my final project for my graduate course on Japanese performance culture. I translated and subtitled the entire performance of what I picked as a stellar example of a Rakugo performance. There are a few spots where I had to fake the translation, but I think the final product is very coherent regardless. I translated the performance with the intention of making it as easy to understand as possible for English speakers with minimal knowledge of Japan ^^

Episode 9 of B-Fighter Kabuto brought me here. Now I understand what the episode was referring about the Rakugo amateur befriending the monster for his split personalities
Wow. I had heard the story before, but watching it be performed as intended... definitely a different experience. Amazing. The way his voice changes so completely is amazing. Almost makes me wanna learn Japanese. Thank you for translating of course! We wouldn't have been able to enjoy such an amazing performance without you!
Was recommend to me after seeing the music video of Shinigami by Kenshi Yonezu. Wild story, I love it.
When I heard what rakugo is I thought it’d be boring since we have lots ot technological entertainment with lots of stimuli nowadays but this is surprisingly fun and could catch my attention throughout. I really enjoyed it, thank you for subbing and uploading.
Anyone here from Masa Works Design?
Here from akane banashi, what a great performance
Came here because of Phoenix Wright 6. I had no idea this existed until half an hour ago! WHOA!
相変わらず、面白くない!頭固い!
頭固いねあんた
Why am I the ood one here, coming here because Joshiraku and yonezu Kenshi's song.
whoa i knew i got here primarily because of akane banashi but never thought the manga did capture the essence from real rakugo :0 really appreciate the translation my man!
The 'Ace Attorney' episode titled "Turnabout Storyteller" brought me here.
me too! poor geiru :(
There are many different endings to this Shinigami, and each one is different depending on the rakugoka(storyteller)
Am here because Raden
this was amazing!!!
This is super cool. I don't know a lot about Rakugo but was seeing some chatter about it and looked into it a bit, and someone linked me this video. Fantastic storytelling here.
if only showa genroku anime put more effort in showing us the full stories of the rakugo it would made the anime more beautifl than it is
After initially reading the manga Akane Banashi I wanted to see Rakugoka live. I found this video first, and instantly fell in love with the art form, and it got me even more hooked on the manga. When I realized that Shiguma was telling this story, the amount of chills, happiness, and excitement I felt brought me back to this video. I'm beyond excited to see that I'm not the only one reading this great manga who came here! ❤
Am I watching, Arakawa Shiguma 'The tearjerker"?
SHIGUMA MY GOAT
I watched this video years ago, and was fully pulled into the story. I was happy to see Akane's master do a version of this in the recent chapters of Akane Banashi.
Where are the English subtitles? There're no close captions on the video.
There are. I don't know why you can't see them.
does anyone know if i can find the story maikeru ani-san started in chapter 110?
Yes just search tachigire rakugo
@ i didn’t find it
@@eliaszinho tachikire senku
Thank you Akane-Banashi for introducing this art form to me and so many others!
when you read Akane Banashi and get curious about what this story is like... and then you go "wait.... GodFather Death????"
Can't help but coming here after reading the comments in Akane-Banashi chp.123. This story is gonna be told by Shiguma.
yoooooooo he's actually like shiguma arakawa in real life
Came here after Akane Banashi! So good 😮
Started reading Akane Banashi a month ago and was a bit confused... came here to YT and landed on this video. Was absolutely mesmerized by it! Went back to Akane manga and read it all. Today was my first time reading the weekly chapter on release date and I can't believe they're doing this story! Superb!
came back here because shiguma
SHIGUMA‼️
For anyone caught up with akane banashi
dear poster, i expect a rise in viewership and engagement, as current akane-banashi chapter just introduced that this will be the next story, so excited to see shiguma's intensity!
Here after the Akane Banashi Chapter, Shiguma is about to put on a master class. The story has only just begun.
this is the story Shiguma the tearjerker is doing right now, chapter only came out. cant wait to read it in akane peak
I feel like.. the author taking reference from this Rakugoka
The second i saw shiguma put the fan on the ground like a cane, i was like wait, isn't not from that video
Peak
This was literally why I searched for a rakugo video on this story!
Love Akane! Good on you for reading on of the best out there right now.
...yeah...the story this week in Akane Banashi
Back after shiguma performance
Absolutely stunning performance. It's hard to find storytellers this good in English that aren't just reading children's books.
What year is this from?
Akane-banashi has been a main catalyst for why I am here. But I’m also a performer as well, seeing stuff like this makes my heart feel so full and makes me want to do it myself. Thank you so much for the good work!
Like many of us Akane fans I too am mesmerized by this art!! Amazing job!!
Oh! This has to be based on “Macario” by B. Traven, right? Adapted from the old Mexican folk legend? (I, too, came from Akane-Banashi.) If you haven’t watched Macario, it’s a marvel from the golden age of Mexican cinema.
This Rakugo was written in 1706. I doubt there was much trade of stories between Mexico and Japan at that time. When was the Mexican Folk Tale written?
Akane also brought me here!
that is grimm fairytales godfather death
Just amazing 😮
came here because i was curious after Ace Attorney Dual Destinies' Turnabout Storyteller and it's really impressive
this is amazing
I was reading the book Nagomi by Ken Mogi and that inspired me to look for this excellent piece!
the guy in the story gives miroku energy
so everyone here came from either akane or shouwa nice
masterful! and thank you for amazing subtitles too
