      I love how trendy unicorn stuff has been the last few years. I think a unicorn baby shower would be super cute- also on my shortlist are circus theme (my husband is into magic and circus arts) and celestial/cosmos.

      I had two showers. I’m having a girl. The first was woodsy themed with bears and red and black plaid, because that’s something neutral that made it easy for my sil to plan in advance before we knew the gender, she added girly splashes when we learned the gender. The second was spring flower themed, planned by my mom for my side of the family.

    Baby showers are not such a big thing here in germany, especially if you had a few kids before and basically have everything a baby needs already. And as far as what you need, I didn't have half of the things you mentioned and we came through the infant stage just fine! I guess every family is just different and what works for them :) also I preferred the snap button onsies because I always felt the zippers are so bulky in some areas and could scratch their skin easily. With the snap button ones you don't have so much bulk and it's perfectly smooth on their skin and once you get the hang of them it's not such a hustle in the night anymore ;)
    My absolute must haves were:
    -Burp cloths (lot of them lol)
    -comfy clothes over cute outfits (like onsies and footed overalls)
    - thick comfy crawl blanket for the floor
    -a carrier or sling/wrap
    - two receiving blankets (one knitted and one thin versatile cloth blanket)
    -a monitor (I only ever had the ones that transfer sound, no video)
    -a crib that attaches to your bed side but provides baby with a safe space to sleep so you couldn't accidentally roll over but keeps baby close at night, also makes night time nursing so much easyer)
    -a good bum cream
    -comfy no wire nursing bras and nursing pads
    I think those were all my essentials :) hope this helps some other mamas out there

      Not sure why you felt the need to try to one up this TH-cam vlogger by posting your personal preferences. This is her channel and her personal recommendations. If you don't agree or dislike her opinion, make your own TH-cam channel. Your comment is incredibly rude and disrespectful to this vlogger and her efforts that went into making this video.

      @@megzhutch777 NO! I love her content! I didn't mean to come across rude at all 😱 I was simply just telling what worked for us and point out that every family is different and every mom has different preference and that a must have list it not necessarily a "must have". This video is about the things you need for a new born and I just stated what things I personaly needed as a new mom. In no way was I gonna disrespect her or invalidate the things she needed! She had good reasons for the things she mentioned.

    My heart almost jumped out of my chest when you said that you can put the "Dock-a-tot" on the kitchen table to keep an eye on the baby. These products (while advertised for sleep) should not be used for unattended sleeping or placed in baby cribs or other places. They should especially not be placed on high services, even if you are right there. These are a place to 'dock' your infant, but they can and do roll out of them and fall off of things. It could go on a safe spot on the floor or you can use one of the many other baby products designed to hold or entertain your infant. While there are no single ways to parent and there are tons of things that work individually for families, just about any baby product on a surface like a counter or table invites disaster. It is easy to get a false sense of safety or security, thinking you might only step away and the product is safe to keep the baby secure. It takes one second for the baby to suddenly unexpectedly roll (yes, they do this even at very early ages unexpectedly) or for the baby to move and slide the product. A fall from a table, countertop, or other similar surface will most likely result in severe injury or death. I appreciate you were probably illustrating an example, but people will take it literally. Use it in the kitchen, but keep it on the floor away from foot traffic or by the route of cooking where something could fall on them. This article is also FAQs about the Dockatot regarding co-sleeping (does not align with AAP Infant Safe Sleep Guidelines). support.dockatot.com/category/86-general-use Great review! Thanks for sharing-didn't mean to jump in with feedback, but felt it important to highlight this.

Thank you for clarifying this though because some people listening might not know better!

    I bought all of this stuff, and only really got good use out of three things: a baby carrier, a sound machine, and the cloth diaper inserts for cleaning spit up. So much stuff is recommended that isn't needed or is actually useless. The perinatal cold packs were like torture. The car baby mirror is popular, but dangerous if you get into an accident. Highway Patrol advises against them. The reusable breast pads can clog ducts.
    Anyway, just providing some feedback and my experience. :-) I found things went much smoother after sorting out what I was actually using, and putting all of the other stuff away in the top of the closet.
    Keep it simple!

      The Perineal packs were a life saver for me!!! Everyone is different. My great grandparents were carried from Texas to Tennessee in saddle bags on horse back as infants, and my grandmother changed all her babies on the floor instead of a changing table! Technically you don't "need" anything to habe a baby except a uterus, sperm, and boobs, but why make things difficult or uncomfortable when we live in 2021!

    Just a note on the car seat cover, please please please research the safety of car seat sleeping, although it is tempting to leave a baby asleep in the car seat once you remove it from a car the seat does not sit on the same angle out of the car and can cause the baby to suffocate, please avoid and research more before buying a cover to encourage this behaviour. There have been many reported tragedies on this issue.

    Dockatots are actually banned in Canada and are not considered safe for sleep in the US. I would recommend looking for another option. Babies have suffocated in them.

    • @shannonholliker8133
      @shannonholliker8133 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They are going to implement more restrictions in the US, but it is in the future. I think they are a good product as a place to lounge with supervision. However, you are right as they don't align with AAP Infant Safe Sleep Guidelines. Placed on the wrong surface or placed in a swaddling blanket that completely disables an infant from turning their heads or using their hands/arms would take one roll-over or a face pressed to close to the side and it is immediate smother risk. I don't think a lot of parents realize just how quickly SIDS happens. I'm not a fan of these individual companies popping up everywhere with no rigorous expectations, recommendations, or testing. Mandatory Infant Safety Testing in the US is so minimal. I tend to stick to the historical brands for most baby products, especially those that are heavily reliant on infant health and safety. There's some really great new products out there, but if they're buy direct or Amazon only, not enough research to convince me.

      @@shannonholliker8133 yes! I was gifted a snuggle me and I did a lot of inquiry about it. I would feel comfortable using it for supervised lounging on the floor/couch, specifically because it will be winter when baby is here and we have wood surfaces and animals. But the person who gifted it to me said they used it for bedsharing and sleep and I just felt like that wasn't safe. I have nothing against cosleeping and would probably do it with the safe sleep 7 on a firm floor bed if it felt right for me and baby, but to do it with an unregulated product with known suffocation risk feels sketchy

    The only thing I dont agree with is using things like the doc a tot for sleeping. Theres been a spike in SIDS since they became trendy and they are very dangerous. I went straight to the comments when she said this, same concept as crib bumpers, if their head gets to the side and they don’t have the control or wake to move their head it’s a really bad suffocation risk!

    • @shannonholliker3591
      @shannonholliker3591 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Yes!! I also cringed when she said putting the baby on the kitchen table. Dock-a-tot, Bobo seats, carriers, etc...A baby should never be placed on a high surface unattended-it's a misconception newborns never roll. The dock a tot is dangerous anyway, then even worse on a high surfy. People put their babies in bobo seats and feed them on counter and table tops. It takes one unexpected jerk by a top-heavy baby and they're life is at-risk. While I am glad just about anyone can use social media for a message and a profit, people really need to stay in their lane when it comes to what they claim to be their expertise. As a parenting vlog, you have to be especially careful and have a responsibility to correct research and recommendations that align with infant/child safety guidelines, especially in product recommendations.

    Some really excellent points! I love these kinds of videos and you have such a nice presence and are so easy to watch.
    The only thing to keep in mind about lanolin and breastfeeding is that lanolin is a natural substance that sheep produce to protect their skin and keep it moisturized. It is removed from the skin of sheep after the wool has been harvested. It’s processed of course to become what we use as nipple protectant and in makeups, etc, but sheep are directly sprayed with pesticides in order to keep wool free of insects and such. The pesticides get on the sheeps’ skin and therefore into the waxy lanolin substance. Those cannot be removed during processing and can be harmful to baby. Earth Mama has an awesome nipple cream!

    I’ve been watching a lot of your videos lately, trying to prepare for the arrival of my first baby (I’m due March 30th). Yesterday I found out that, because of the coronavirus, hospitals in my country are banning everybody from delivery rooms, from visiting, everything. That means my husband won’t be with me as I deliver and won’t even see our baby till we leave the hospital few days later (hopefully not longer than that). I’m honestly devastated. We were so exited to share this experience as a family. It’s so hard to wrap my head around the fact I’m going to go through the birth alone, but the worst part is that my husband will miss the birth of our child, the first feeding, first cuddles, first DAYS...I’m just so so sad. 😭😭😭 that is so sad, I think the hospital should make exceptions based on the mother's needs. Even if it's just him nobody else! Surely he can just wear a mask or something. It's so important the emotional and physical well-being of the mother during labour!! Ohhhh hugs of sympathy is the best I can send to you, that is tough :(

    BEST LIST and so so helpful! I'm expecting my third baby and EVERYTHING you mentioned here is a must have!! You mentioned a few items that i hadn't thought of but would really help with a few new born struggles that I hadn't found a good solution yet (reusable freezer pads, a dark carseat cover and cloth diapers that i cannot wait to try and not have a huge milk mess!). And yes, GET ALL THREE carriers and try them out, each of my kids liked different ones at first and I wish i had just had them all there to try when I needed them!

    My husband is quite a loud person and we were bringing our baby to church so found baby headphones helpful for naps in the parenting room where there were kids playing (they could still hear things but it wasn't as loud) and really wanted to make sure he could sleep in all environments (light, dark, loud, quiet) and it's really made our lives SO MUCH EASIER our house ended up being the sound machine haha then we put a Google home in his room and used it for music at bedtime

    I have hated the zip up sleepers. I love the Carter’s sleep and play snap sleepers. I find them much more convenient and they don’t run as tight as most zip up sleepers (my babies are big). You can easily check the diaper to see if wet or dirty, and you can keep their torso warm and covered while only opening the leg snaps. Plus I don’t feel like I’m breaking my child’s leg trying to shove it into the leg side without the zipper. I’m on baby #6.

  • @mariocartel544
    @mariocartel544 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I always use cloth diapers for burp cloths lol. My mom and sister gave me a huge stack of the carters type and i literally use them as kitchen rags instead because they dont work as spit up rags they dont absorb anything. The cloth diapers are good changing liners too since newborns and sometimes older babies will go while being changed so its easier to just toss it in the wash than clean up the whole mess some other way. And they make really good diapers if you buy a good brand too.

    Just one thing that no one ever mentioned about zip sleepers that when you need change a nappy you need to zero all the zip down…baby gets cold (especially with dirty nappy not just wet). I like zip ones but must say that I prefer buttons one more just because I can open only the bottom of the sleeper and change nappy. This works great with the sleeping bag which have two zips. You can unzip sleeping bag from bottom up half way than open buttons on the sleepers half way. This way baby is still cozy and most important still snuggled at the upper body 😍
    PS and this days the middle buttons are with a different colours to the rest of the buttons which helps you quickly closed the sleepers back 😁

    As a mother myself, I don't think all of these are "must-have", we did just fine without many of them. But I do have to appreciate how practical your tips are and... why in the world didn't I think of the vacuum bags myself? :D We were getting them for something else but not for the baby clothes that take up so much space... seriously. :D Thank you!
    Also, I love that you think of the environment. The moment you mentioned *reusable* breast pads, I was clapping my hands loudly. And they are so much more comfortable too!
    Btw, sadly, lanolin is super expensive in my country. I wonder how the market works that it's so cheap in the US... slightly envious of you. We have some good products for the things you mentioned, but of course it requires us to have a special tube for breasts and one for baby butt and another one for eczema... I too wish I could just have one thing for everything.
    Thank you for the great tips! Now I'm gonna sit down and make a list. :))

    The carseat cover should not be used while the baby is sleeping as you won't be able to see them and monitor their sleep. Babies have already died by being left in their carseat to sleep outside of the car. Always make sure you can see your child and do not leave them to sleep in a capsule. Please 😢

      I don’t think she’s pretending it doesn’t exist. There are a lot of moms that appreciate the information and her channel is about moms and babies. If people want to hear about the Coronavirus they can watch the news etc. Moms to be still deserve a baby shower/ registry and should be allowed to experience a pregnancy with as much celebration and support they can get. Yes people are suffering and dying and it is very tragic but there are a lot of moms to be too. Also if you ad items to a registry and no one gifts the items to you, the moms to be can get discounts on those items.
