    In a long-ago job, I deployed a few wireless networks with DOS clients using pre-802.11 Proxim RangeLan cards. I think top speed was around 1Mbs. The DOS machines ran 3270 emulation connecting to the patient record/billing system. The machines were on carts and used in ERs. The idea was when a seriously injured patient, for example from a bad auto accident, was brought in patient registration could go to the ER room to capture the patient info and record any billable events. Usually this was done after the fact and based upon the memory of the medical staff. This led to billable items being missed. Unsurprisingly this didn't really work. Medical staff would kick the patient registration people out, patient registration would forget to plug the carts in to recharge and anytime someone used the leaky microwave in the breakroom signal would be lost. These systems were usually abandoned within months. We would recommend against installing the systems pointing out the non-technical issues, but every hospital thought they were going to be the ones to make it work.

    • @RetroTechChris
      @RetroTechChris  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey there! Basically the only way to get rid of that is to run at a higher resolution (in Windows, etc.), or with the right display driver, you can scale nominally the text modes in a DOS window under Windows using FN+t. Hope that helps

    Hey Chris, how do you find these laptops? I lost my Pentium 133/ESS Fujitsu as my car was impounded after a cross-country move where there was nothing I could do to recover it. Over $7,000 of my personal belongings were tossed out, including the Roland sound canvas SCP-55 pcmcia card I shelled out $600 for. I was just wondering if you knew an easy way to find a comparable replacement. Is there a model of this laptop that has both a Pentium 133 in speed, as well as a 640 x 480 TFT screen? The only flaw of my Fujitsu was the screen was 800 x 600, but 75 MHz of these lower-end Compaqs is a bit too choppy for the DOS games I like. The 120mhz 5000 model you listed may be good enough, but it appears to be uncommon, and I'm curious on if it will divide evenly "turbo wise" for correct speed on older games.

    • @RetroTechChris
      @RetroTechChris  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yikes! I'm really sorry to hear that. As far as how I get these, the running joke is that these damn things just keep appearing here. But I usually get them on eBay. If you are on Facebook, join our Compaq LTE and Armada Owners group, sometimes members will sell things there as well! Regarding the 640x480 with a Pentium 133, any model LTE 5000 can take any processor. The LTE 5000 does have a 640x480 model, but with a Pentium 75. If you find a processor card, you can swap it in!

    • @Zuon94
      @Zuon94 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@RetroTechChris well it is optimistic to know you can swap the CPU. Unfortunately, I'm unable to make a Facebook account, so I guess I'll just keep eBay hunting. I'm definitely not going to be that guy to ask you to part with any of yours haha. I get what it's like to have something you love - no amount of value offered can convince us to part with nostalgia. Some things are priceless. XD

    • @Zuon94
      @Zuon94 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@RetroTechChris I have one last question while I wait for a listing on eBay to appear... Do these laptops launch the DOS Megaman X port correctly? I remember that game in particular flashing an error code if your system RAM was greater than 32 mb. There may be other games like this, but this is the one that I experienced.

It's a creation of mine I'm very proud of, but deleted all videos on my channel after going through some life stuff. I'm sure someone made a mirror of it somewhere. Either way, I don't recommend playing with the default music. They weren't very good at MIDI composition.
