Learn a method for tank sprayer calibration for weed control in lawns. Knowing how to calibrate a sprayer is very important for lawn care because you need to know how much water volume is being applied to a lawn to know how much of a herbicide to mix in the tank. We are looking to get down 2 gallons per minute on 1000 sqft. After calibrating, it looks like we are at only 85 oz per 1000 when using the 2.0 yellow tip from lesco. I have ordered a 3.0 green tip, but wanted to know if there was any problem with upping the pressure a bit till it comes in? Any idea what the gpm was on the nozzle used in this video?

Wondering what's up with my sprayer LOL. My hypro D403 won't already but 80oz/15 seconds (320oz/minute).

What size hose do you use? 300' x 1/2"?
what psi were you running on here and nozzle and rpm of engine?
If you have a sprayer with 7 nozzles, do you take the water from one nozzle and multiply by 7?

Jason..im looking at that exact sprayer for my biz...a couple questions about the video. first off....pressure wasn't mentioned. Approximately what pressure was he running. Being that I'm here in Texas, wind drift is always an issue. Sounds like his tip of running a larger volume (2-3 gallons per 1000) would be beneficial overall in my area. I have a handful of customers requesting applications, and have been trying to figure out what I need to get. I already have my commercial applicators license, and gen liability insurance. Can you also provide more info about what gun/tip he was using. Very helpful video.....am REALLY hope to get into this portion of the industry for 2018. Thanks! Is it hard to clean tanks after use? going from one chemical to another....what steps are involved to ensure I don't apply the wrong chemical to a lawn. I'm guessing it would be best to keep sterilants in a stand alone sprayer rig to ensure there is no cross contamination. The reason I ask that is because I have already been doing some of that type of work on a few commercial properties that I take care of using backpack sprayers (for cracks/crevice type stuff). My other option instead of this 200 gallon unit is the Gregson clark sprayer that has the small boom and mounts inside the lesco type walk behind Fert Spreader. My concern with a boom is wind drift. My thought is the gun would ensure less drift vs the booms. I know...long post, but hope you can provide some assistance here. Thanks so much, and happy holidays!
+rbljackson I can't speak so much for the tank that was shown in the video because that's not my time. Many people use a Lesco gun. That is what I use. I think you are correct in saying that more water volume would cut down on the Wind Drift if that is a concern. Cross-contamination could become a concern depending on what chemical is in a tank. Sometimes I try to cycle clean water through the tank to remove as much of a particular herbicide as possible. There is a lot to learn in the weed control and fertilization business. You need to put together a program so that you know what you are planning to spray and when you are planning to spray it on certain grass types
If you have your applicator license you should already know what the eff your doing
Is that nozzle a 4.0gpm ?
Have a graham sprayer. It came with a 3gpm nozzle. When I calibrated the sprayer its spraying at 1.36g per 1,000sqft. Its this a good rate to spray fertilizer and soil amendments? All my herbicides i am using d flowzone backpack sprayers
I would try it and see if it clogs the filter. I would think it would be fine

I just started working for a Company they spray 4 gallons per 1000 sqft the tank we use is 150 gallons for lawn and 50 gallons for shrubs im sorry I’m not getting the math not clicking please help
Great video, could you do one on how to calibrate a broadcast spreader?
Find the spread width of your spreader and from there measure out your test length to get 1000 sq ft. I just use a straight line. Once you have that, find the recommended amount of product to be applied per 1k sq ft. Let's say 4 lbs of fertilizer per 1000. Measure out 5 lbs, put it in the hopper, apply it over the 1000 sq ft area. If you have some left over, weigh the remaining amount. If you come out with 1 lb left over, you're perfect. If you run out in the 1000 sq ft test area, you're applying too much. If you're under or over, adjust the flow opening accordingly.
Basically you're just spreading in a known area of 1000 sq ft. And aiming to get the spreader to apply whatever the recommended rate is in that area by trial and error. Know your starting weight, and weight the leftover material.
i feel like its to complicated that way. i mark 1000 sq feet adjust my speed and pressure to 2 gallons per 1000 with a stop watch and bucket.
The main reason is the trainee will focus on not spraying outside the square and that will usually change his pace and arm movement with that attempt. The ultimate goal is to have used the right amount of product per 1000 sq. ft. when a lawn treatment is completed. There are several good ways to approach calibration. This is just one.
How often should you calibrate?
+Scott Allison I would say it would be important to check your accuracy on lawns on a weekly basis. I don't check my water level after every lawn. As far as calibration like was demonstrated in this video, I don't see a reason to do it often unless something has changed. Perhaps twice a year would be a good amount. I would be interested to hear others opinion on the question
Can you put the formula on here? It looks like he had 1000 written but said 100
1000 was correct. My mistake!
Personally I think that's way to much square footage in the time frame. To low of volume as well. In Florida you can't run that low of volume unless you want poor fert, weed, and insect control. I'm sure further up north you can get away with this.
Just my opinion and experience. Our turf grasses are thick and hard to penetrate.
