It took me a while to really discover the Magica album but I would now say that it's my favourite Dio album: but then I prefer slow numbers

I’m with Martin my favourite Dio band album is also Dream Evil and it’s also the first time I heard Dio… well I thought it was until many years later I heard butterfly ball and realised I’d heard that as a kid

"Lock Up the Wolves " and "Strange Highways" are the best of "the path not taken" albums for Dio, but the chemstry with Dio and the boys on the first two albums is incredible. Like they had been together for 10 years.

I actually really like Hungry for Heaven...that song pumps me up and is inspiring.

You could not have chosen two more knowledgable people to join you on this ranking video than Martin and Pete. What they don’t know about Dio, isn’t worth knowing. I enjoyed this and was surprised at how different everyone’s list was.
I saw Ronnie over 20 times between 1987 and 2008 and even met him on many occasions courtesy of Wendy and the backstage passes she was always able to arrange for us. A nicer guy never walked this earth.

Good to see ‘Master Of The Moon’ getting some praise. ‘Shivers’ ‘The Man Who Would Be King’ & ‘The Eyes’ , the latter’s lyrics sounding still very relevant,with the internet being used for good and very very bad..My favourite track from ‘Lock Up The Wolves’ is ‘Between To Hearts’ . It has that ‘Don’t Talk To Strangers’ feel initially, but the discordant guitar, helps to signpost the darkness that can exist in some human relationships. ‘Wild One’ is that classic fast and fluid opener,and I’ve always loved the way Ronnie works in that old saying from my Grandparents time, “A Bird in the bush,is worth two in the hand”.. From Angry Machines ‘Dying In America’,still has some mileage today. ‘This Is Your Life’ remains poignant. Always enjoyed a lot of ‘Strange Highways’. Of course the Viv Campbell era is where sparks flew. I do believe that because Viv didn’t get a more ‘’equitable’’ financial deal that was allegedly promised to the band by Ronnie ,Viv didn’t want to submit his best ideas to the band come the ‘Sacred Heart’ album. I remember seeing the ‘Rock’n’Roll Children’ promo, and felt the band had sold out. The all for one,one for all band vibe of the first two albums had rapidly dissipated. I stopped listening to Dio band albums until I heard ‘Jesus Mary..’ and a little later Doug Aldrich’s guitar sound and fiery playing on ‘Killing The Dragon’ ‘…Spider’ & ‘Push’. I agree with Pete about ‘Magica’. Loved Craig’s doffing of the cap to Ritchie on that album though.’Fever Dreams’ & especially ‘As Long As It’s Not About Love’, the latter being an all time Dio band classic.RJD was happiest working with Iommi,Butler & Appice and they left us some great music.Fantastic chemistry. ‘The Devil Cried’ & ‘Bible Black’ to name but a few. I wonder what Ronnie would have brought to the table if Blackmore,Powell & Dio had reunited. All in all a great musical legacy.
I love Dio as a singer and I like the band. I wish though that he had dared go in different directions. My favorite Dio-material is Rainbow. Mostly because there are plenty of varied material on the records. While "Holy Diver" is just as good or maybe even better than "Long Live Rock N' Roll"... I think Long Live is the more interesting record. After "Dream Evil" I wished Dio had reached around more and perhaps gone a different route somehow. It got too much of the same thing without really being as good (a part from maybe a few songs here and there).
I've seen you on Petes channel, i think this is the first vid I've seen on your channel. I'm very much looking forward to this.

My favorite Dio work is his work with Sabbath, then Rainbow, then his solo stuff, and finally with Elf.
Since I collect Sabbath like a nutnut, I've got every Dio fronted album, from each group, in every format it was released in.
Purely Dio related grails, I've got OP's of Magica, Killing the Dragon, Master of the Moon and that unofficial Angry Machines(of course i picked up those recent reissues with the lenticular covers).

I have always viewed Strange Highways as the natural evolution from Dehumanizer for Ronnie. I actual really dig the Tracy G stuff because to me, he’s the closest thing in the solo catalog to Tony Iommi.
As far as my top spot, it’s a tie for me between Holy Diver and Dream Evil (the first Dio album I ever bought, and I’m sure that plays a part in its ranking)

Tremendous show / especially this “ trio” LAST in LINE by a hair over Holy DIVER for me. ( today anyway) saw DIO 7x in the New Jersey/ NYC area over the years . Master of the MOON 🌙 is probably my no 10 selection. 👍💯

DIO; man, love'em all. My least favorite would be "Angry Machines" but it's still a good album and I listen to it a lot. My absolute favorite is "Dream Evil", without doubt. 🍺🤘

Doctor Eddie Ganja here I first got into Ronnie James Dio with Rainbow The Rainbow On Stage live album he does a great Job on that live album is my all time favorite vocalist saw The Black and Blue Tour 1980 Saw The Mob Rules saw first 4 Tours with Dio Holy Diver is The best Dio album

DIO man who don`t like DIO the little man with the great vice. Rainbow, Black Sabbath and DIO Band. I have must of his works. DVD DIO live from England 1993 i have that one.

I LOVE all of Ronnie's music. I thought Sacred Heart was a solid album but it is a bit of a disappointment for me. I lovecthe 2nd half of it but for me the songs were too short and Shoot Shoot could have been left off the album for me. Don't care too much for Hungry for Heaven & Rock N Roll Children. I was just starting high school when Lock up the Wolves came out. I really love this album. This is such an underrated album to me. I love the tone of Ronnie's vocals here, I think it's one of his best. His voice has this rich tone that I love. His voice wad stellar his whole career but I really love his tone from Lock Up the Wolves, Dehumanizer/Sabbath & Strange Highways. Rowan was I think Ronnie's best or 2nd best guitarist tied with of course Vivian. Not many people will agree with me, I know. Just my opinion. The last 3 on my list I thought could have most substance, Magica was good but the first 2 songs are instrumentals and I don't listen to Dio for instrumentals.

Dream Evil got ignored by me because of my dislike for Sacred Heart. I've since played it and like it, but I don't feel I've played it enough to feel solid in ranking it. I know I want to play it more(not enough hours
1 - Sacred Heart - 'Shoot Shoot's the only song I don't care for on it other wise it's a fantastic album.

Master of the moon...my fave...I think a lot of people don't like it because in 2004 metal was almost death and the supposed metal heads were too lazy to take time to listen the album..
On the biggest contrarian of them all. My favorites are sacred heart, killing the dragon, and Master of the Moon. In that order.
Love Master of the Moon
Those 80's synths diminish Sacred Heart, Headless Cross and Bark at the Moon for me. For some reason I can overlook it on Bark more than the other two.
I love "Dream Evil", too, but at the time it came out I had been so disappointed in "Sacred Heart" and "Intermission" (introducing a new guitarist with a song like "Time to Burn"?) that I didn't even bother trying to hear it. Even though there were a few songs I liked on "Sacred Heart", each time I managed to slog through the title track only to hit "Rock 'n' Roll Children" at the end of side 1, the album would just put its head down and expire. It's not even a long album, but I still can't sit through it all. It was 20 years until I gave "Dream Evil" a chance.
I believe I have somewhat of a contrarian view on Dio's discography as I prefer the middle part (Lock Up the Wolves, Strange Highways, Angry Machines), followed by the First 4, then the latter period. Cheers.
Pete, one thing you said nailed it for me, 'when it's too commercial it's not good.'
For me, Dio is not meant to make 'commercial' music. To that end, I didn't like Sacred Heart, and that had me ignore him for a while.
I don't like the Angry Machines tone, vibe very much. I like Master Of the Moon a bit more than you guys seem to, as well as Magica.
The first two are my favs, probably the same as just about everyone.
Lock up the wolves and Strange highways are my 2 faves. I am in the minority for sure.

Pete is correct when saying the DIO albums are such a mixed bag. I loved all of the differences in opinions when it comes to these records. I feel as if it's mostly a foregone conclusion with most people's first two choices, but 3-10 could be a bit of a surprise.
10. Magica: This is the one album I just have NEVER been able to get into. I'm super hit or miss on concept records, and I find this to be a huge miss! It doesn't matter a bit that Craig Goldy is back for this one, as I find this to be an absolute snooze fest. I really like "Fever Dreams" and "Chalis" and slog through the rest of the album
09. Strange Highways: I use to hate the Tracy G years, now I'm a bit more acceptable to these albums. This is the only album that I don't own from DIO. I'm a completist, so I will eventually get this, but I'm not in a hurry.
08. Master of the Moon: This quite possibly might be the coolest album cover of the DIO albums. This is an album I want to like more than I do. I almost had this at #9. I find a lot of the songs on this album to be just meh. Not bad, but not particularly good. It just doesn't have a lot of hooks/memorable riffs.
07. Angry Machines: It's sort of weird to see this album this high for me, as I've always slagged on the Tracy G stuff. I love Dying In America and always have!
06. Sacred Heart: It kills me not to have this in my Top 5, as it seems a bit sacrilege, since Vivian is on this album. The title track might be my favorite DIO song of all time. I also love "Fallen Angels" and "King of Rock and Roll", but I struggle quite a bit with everything else on this record. The song Shoot, Shoot is easily the worst DIO song of all time. What a shitter!
05. Killing the Dragon: Like the guys said, this is a record with a bit more of a gallop. It breaks away from that slow/doomy sound which I appreciate from a DIO record. I love Doug Aldrich on this record. He's one of my favorite guitarists.
04. Dream Evil: This album has the history of flip-flopping with my #3 selection. I feel like my Top 4 have always been my Top 4 DIO picks. There's really nothing wrong with this record, outside of the fact that Vivian isn't on it. I think Craig Goldy does a pretty admirable job, but Vivian is missed. There are still some great moments, most notably, the title track, "Sunset Superman" and "All the Fools Sailed Away"
03. Lock Up the Wolves: I've always championed this album. It's always been an underdog and I love that an 18-year-old guitarist got his chance to play with one of the greats. I don't mind that this album more than others is dominated by slower songs, because I like most of those slower songs. Like Pete stated, I wish we could have seen another album from this lineup.
02. The Last In Line: This album will always be in my Top 2 and will probably never move from the two spot. The difference between Holy Diver and The Last In Line, is the second side. There are a couple of songs that I skip on this album. "We Rock" and "The Last In Line" are brilliant songs.
01 Holy Diver: If not a 10/10, it's pretty damn close with this album. What an amazing debut!

Had to laugh at the end when Martin showed the Dream Evil tour booklet, saying it was much better than the Holy Diver one. First time I saw Dio was on the Last in Line tour and we got the leftover Holy Diver books and, yeah, they sucked
Strange Highways best album after the first two!
It seems to me that while Dio is an incredible vocalist, he was not great at being leader (dictator) of the band. When he combined with a good / great band with people who actually had a say in the music, he was as good as they get. As often as he changed band members, I wonder if he was difficult to work with?
Not sure but he definitely had a vision of what he wanted to do.

Angry Machines is criminally underrated and it would be in my top 5 DIO albums easily. Tracy G kicks @ss. In my opinion Sacred Heart is OVERRATED. It is such a weak album I don't get the praise for it. It has like 3 strong tracks. The rest are forgettable
