The Soviet VR Game Problem - Convrgence
ฝัง
- เผยแพร่เมื่อ 21 พ.ย. 2024
- Convrgence (if you couldn't tell) is a VR extraction shooter I think. It's kind of like if Into the Radius and Tarkov had a baby. But despite spelling it's name CONVRGENCE it's actually really beautifully understated. It's the dark grimy post cold war soviet loot hoarding gameplay that is so popular right now but just in VR with amazing graphics. Which confuses me because I want this to be my go to spooky soviet VR game now even though Into the Radius is much bigger and more open world. My smooth brain hurts.

it’s a soviet soap at 6:40 and 72% is it’s fatty acids contents. It was used for a laundry, but I heard stories about how good your hair can be washed which this
I've always been fascinated at how different isolated cultures addressed the same thing. So swing Soviet era normal stuff like that really makes me smile.
@@zendell37 that was like the default soviet brown soap that everyone had, and man did it stink. had this weird, bitter, chemical smell... if you know, you know. but yeah, it did the job.
man, your hair gets stiff af if you wash it with this 😄
although there is one more which is made from birch tar, it smells awesome
@@overmind06 "It did the job" - as good as cinder.
6:32 "Into the 2 radius: Diameter" I choked on my drink so bad I almost died. Poetry
That was possibly the funniest moment for me in all of Habie's hilarity.
and the third game is gonna be called Into the Radius 3: Circumference
@@allpixelsmatter5471 or rather, "Radius π: Circumference"!
@@Catalysten ok that was a good one way better then mine lol
I was literally about to post the exact same comment lmao
"guitars and gas masks" is the absolute best name for this genre of games, it needs to catch on
I've been calling them "Roadside Picnic" games because I like how delightfully confusing of a name it is to people who don't know what I'm talking about, but "Guitar's and Gas Masks" is a pretty good one too.
Today I learned Habie has never read Roadside Picnic.
Every game mentioned here is inspired by that book.
Except for metro which is based on the metro books...
@@SpiderFuka Metro books came out in 2002 so its very possible that those books were also inspired by roadside picnic
@@SpiderFuka Except the Metro books were inspired by Roadside Picnic :P
I had always heard that, and its definitely true. But aside from The Zone and its qualities, Roadside Picnic has very little to do with STALKER. Lol
@@SpiderFuka the metro books not only are inspired by Roadside Picnic, they contain a few direct references to it.
Can’t recognize soap? Habie has finally become a true gamer.
I think it might get a little confusing after playing a game with a dude called soap (as the main protagonist as well)
@@nickzinner9318 Same here, I thought it was a MW2 reference before I saw it come up in the video
R.I.P paradox of hope
was pretty dirty what the Metro publisher did to it, but it makes since with them releasing a Metro VR game soon. will be funny if the VR game made by an entire studio is worse than a fan game made by one guy tho
@@HickieyFS so, competitor was removed
@@jedizhawk If you can call a fan project made by one guy a "competitor" then yeah. seems pretty telling that they're scared of "competing" with a one man team.
@@HickieyFS paradox of hope is almost a direct rip off of metro, it was not a surprise that it was striked. How is striking it "dirty"?
@@panu92 where you see a ripoff I see a passion project by a fan. The publisher clearly isn't confident in their upcoming product and saw a fan game made by one person as competition to their game being made by an entire studio.
Well, Stalker is actually based on a book called Roadside Picnic, though I've not gotten around to reading it yet, so I can't ACTUALLY confirm whether floating Russian objects came from there or not, but it's very possible!
Pretty much all of them are. Into the Radius' opening screen is a quote directly from the book.
Wow I never even knew this I have to check that book out
Well actually it was based on a soviet movie called Stalker, which in turn was based on Roadside Picnic
@@battlesheep2552 "Well actually 🤓"
Well in roadside picnic it'd be floating canadian objects
2:05 Read "Roadside Picnic." It's where all this kind of stuff originated. It's slow but really well written and honestly kinda whiplashed me from how good the characters were written. Fucking AMAZING ending. Props to Into The Raidius for the Quote from the book in the loading screen that got me to read it. "Happiness, free, for everyone, and let no one be forgotten."
Btw if you enjoyed that one and maybe some other books from Strugatskie brothers, try out a small indie title Final Station - came in for a zombie survival on a train, stayed for thick atmosphere of the entirety of Strugatskie books, there is even a HUGE monument to them in game, devs are clearly big fans

ah yes a sequel to one of my favorite vr games! "in 2 the 2 2, 2222"
Where is this in the video? I can find the other 2 references to the In2 the diameter/2, but not this one, and I'm getting the feeling it got cut or something.
Edit. I'm just deaf and blind i guess, it's 7:04
definitely my favorite full 8 minute video that i have watched all of
I just... It's been a couple of years since i bought my Quest 2, and i was not early to that party. But i think there's still a categorical difference between people who have tried a VR game and gone from thinking "ey this feels a bit odd" to having their brain completely accept a new fictional reality, and then people who have not done any of that.
And there's just no way to bridge that gap with words. Someone has either done that, or they think it sounds fucking stupid.
It's so difficult to describe to people who haven't tried it. Having depth -perception means so much
I always forget when watching these videos that how i'm seeing this is very much not how Habie is seeing it - he's seeing it through his eyes, not his screen (I get that we're both seeing a screen through eyes, you get what I mean)
_Right?_ I've been struck by two things about VR:
1. Putting a bad game in VR doesn't stop it from being a bad game. This has burned me on a lot of flatscreen-to-VR adaptations.
2. The physical, _kinetic_ presence which a VR game entails really does make clearly appreciable storytelling magic out of what might be called the most understated text. This has sold me on a lot of VR games which I hadn't been expecting to enjoy at all.

broo ive been playing this game all week, has a really good foundation and polish but has a long ways to go outside the main safe hub. the second area is nightmare fuel
This is quite possibly the best video habie has ever made. Something’s about the humor and tone was just peak habie but also really entertaining. Bravo.
For those who don’t know: Paradox Of Hope got taken down because there is an official Metro VR in development and should be released sometime this year, so I imagine they didn’t want competition.
If it’s not as good as paradox I’m gonna be livid
Im really curious cause i could find nothing that say it was the metro publisher that sent the cease and desist could someone send me a link or something
@@corndogfilms I think whoever filed that is still anonymous, all I know is that the same devs who made Arizona Sunshine are the ones working on the new Metro VR.

Hello, as an integral part of the ConVRgence Discord, I want to say thank you for sharing this content 😊
We, the human race, will never get enough of roaming a dystopian, upside-down, topsy-turvy Russian themed wasteland.
Cannot wait for Metro Awakening
Don't support greedy devs/publishers that abuse the copyright system to bully small indie teams.
@@BlackWolf9988 I mean.... the game litterally looks like metro and has most of it's mechanics, I think "abuse" could be wildely discussed here
@@verzocktes look at the early beta builds of metro 2033. They literally had stolen assets, weapons and sounds from stalker. The metro devs also worked in the stalker team before also had their first development experience working and selling a modded warcraft build. Its very hypocritical they copy right abused when their own past was arguably worse.
I know I'm the 500th person to tell you this but the concept of 'The Zone' filled with anomalous, floating objects comes from the classic Soviet Sci-fi novel 'Roadside Picnic', and yes you should definitely read it. The name 'Stalker' is derived from the name given to those who enter the zone and was popularised as the de-facto naming convention by the equally brilliant Tarkovsky film 'Stalker', and yes you should also watch it.
There's also a second, underground, area, which has some nightmarish stuff, and is pretty much the assets from the areas of the first game.
I cant wait for In 2 the 2 Radius: Diameter
Flipping love this game. Its got so much potential. Especially if he expands it into larger maps line in2 The (diameter/2).
I'm hyped for the officially licensed metro vr coming out later this year
Rip metro vr (paradox of hope) 😢 you will be missed

I love you content bro, thanks for making new vids every week
Due to our profile pictures, I feel like we are required to be rivals in someway.
@@TheFoolish_BearI completely agree
i was really liking the names for the game he came up with before the stroke
Ironic that they got a C&D from 4A when they themselves got sued by GSC when Metro 2033 was in development for its similarities to STALKER
The reason why Russian inspired games look similar is because they take inspiration from Russian post apocalyptic books in particular the Metro books, and the book Roadside Picnic (which inspired S.T.A.L.K.E.R). The things like floating objects in these kinds of games is because the ladder books zones were created by alien landing sites.
They are making a VR metro game titled "metro awakening", I am so excited for it.
"Into the Taborius" is now the official genre title of this type of game
The amount of ridiculous names for into the radius is amazing i almost died choking on my pizza
Hearing Habi say Cheeki Breeki was a surprise, but a welcome one for sure.
“into the 2 radius: diameter” made me chuckle a lot lol

2 Radius 2 Into... damn, that one caught me off guard. My face hurts so much.
Thank you for your service good Sir. o7
As others have mentioned its Roadside Picknic and then later the Soviet era sci-fi film literally named STALKER. They were honest so influentential on russian sci-fi that trying to claim those settings seems almost like trying to claim robots or andriods to a degree.
I don’t even watch the video I just skip to the atomic mirror brain section, it’s my favorite part

"An empire that spanned half the globe until they decided they wanted McDonalds" is such a hilarious and not entirely untrue way to sum up the history of the USSR.
I love that the dev says he was "falsely" accused of Copy Right infringement,
like bro, I don't vibe with copyright like, at all! But you DID make a Metro VR game, IDC how you call it but it's metro, just damn look at it?
gaxap lol. It's sahar aka sugar.
the thing at 4:44 is kissel, or a powder of it that you mix hot water into. It's a kind of gello-liquid dessert that can be served cold as a drink or hot with porridge for example.
I must've bought Paradox of hope one week before it got DMCA'd, it was a VERY good metroesque experience, I want to pick this up as well, but I still need to finish/start into the radius. One day, when I can walk properly again.
this looks so similar to into the radius... they must be using a lot of similar plug ins or systems... the UI for grabbing items looks similar, the mounting and cleaning of guns is almost 1:1, and the atmosphere looks almost identical. you could splice this and into the radius footage and most people probably wouldn't be able to tell the difference. but that is a really cool idea for a game, and i hope they can flesh it out into a unique experience that lives alongside into the radius!

The fact that you can not only pet the dog, but FEED THE DOG has instantly sold me on this game
Your videos always cheer me up man, thank you so much
I like to think of games like this as 'Stalkerlikes' since that's where the trend really started, and where most of the games in that 'genre' pull inspiration from.
Can’t wait for In 2 The 2 2 2 2 2
I fucking died at sugar GAXAP part, love when people are trying to read cyrillic
hearing how habie pronounces "sugar" as "kaxap" as native russian speaker is gonna be silliest thing in this video
I felt so bad for the dev when Paradox of Hope had to be scrapped. Honestly, I wonder if they've considered a Quest port. The graphics, while nice, look like a standalone version could be possible (both Into the Radius games are also on Quest).
I have no stake in it either way, I'm just pulling for the dev to do well and having the game in a 20 million+ user ecosystem couldn't hurt.
Idk, the dev definitely copies a lot from other games. Not always bad but that is why this "review" is funny.
@@randilldoI mean most modern fps ripped off some pretty big mechanics from half life. It's basically it's own genre at this point. Post apocalypse looter shooter.
Im tardy to the party. Why was the game scrapped?
@@jayl5032 the devs of Metro said it was too close to their IPs. They threatened litigation and then the small dev threw in the towel.

This just makes me wish the Metro developers could have produced a more fleshed out or expanded version of the Last Light “Kshatriya” DLC.
I can’t say 100% what it was about it that made me so much more unsettled by the world but for me that was the quintessential metro video game experience.
Hey I'm glad instead of saying it's Salvador-Dali-like that you switched it up to be Daliesque 😉
