- Peggy Lee joins The Fontane Sisters (Bea, Geri and Marge Rosse) for a rendition of the folk classic “On Top of Old Smokey” on TV’s Top Tunes, originally broadcast in 1951.
In the early 1950s Peggy Lee and Mel Tormé co-hosted “TV’s Top Tunes,” a thrice-weekly program featuring a variety of musical performances.
Lyrics
On top of Old Smokey,
all covered with snow
I lost my true lover
for courting so slow
For courting’s a pleasure,
but parting is grief
And a false-hearted lover
is worse than a thief
A thief will just rob you
and take what you have
But a false-hearted lover
will lead you to your grave.
The grave will decay you
and turn you to dust
Not one boy in a hundred
a poor girl can trust
They’ll hug you and kiss you
and tell you more lies
Than cross ties on a railroad
or stars in the sky
So come you young maidens
and listen to me
Never place your affection
in a green willow tree
For the leaves, they will wither
the roots, they will die
And you’ll be forsaken
and never know why
On top of Old Smokey,
all covered with snow
I lost my true lover
for courting so slow

Peggy is so young here, but you can hear her unique tone and just a hint of her natural swing coming through. 🏆
It’s interesting how her tone matured over the course of her career. And her sense of timing, well, how she put it was: “I really have no sense of time except for swing time.” 💞💫🙌
@@PeggyLeeofficial It's true, our voices change over time, and most but not all of womens voices lower in register a bit. She was a total natural and a very interesting person. Thanks for posting!! 🌹
Peggy Lee. ❤.
What a great rarity to see of Peggy so young and so talented.
Like she always said, music was her life ✨💝💐
I've got a crush on Miss Peggy Lee! Always have, always will! The best diva ever!❤
✨🥰💞
Maravillosas !! 🎉🎉🎉❤❤❤❤
This is one of the songs we sang as children with my grandmother a lot, in the 60s and early 70s.
Looking back, the lyrics are quite eye-opening! ✨💞

It seems as though my comment did have an impact! I wonder if there is any surviving audio of Peggy’s earliest radio recordings on local North Dakota stations in the 30s They would be very interesting to hear
It seems it did indeed! If any such recordings are unearthed, they will definitely make their way out into the world! 💫🙏💞
