  • Welcome to another layout tour. This video covers Mr. Frank Pastore's Allegheny Central HO Scale layout. The layout fills Frank's basement, and has been expanded several times over the years. It is an operating layout, and Frank has a crew of regular operators who come over often for three hour sessions.
Follow along as we tour the layout with Frank and see a coal train traversing the main line.
The layout lighting is a bit dark for videos, so I had to crank the ISO and shoot wide open. I also had to play with the lighting in editing. In person the layout looks great! And in a bit of a head slap moment I forgot to bring along the new video lights I had purchased for this exact situation. Duh Rob!
I want to thank Frank for his gracious hospitality and allowing us to visit and video his wonderful layout. I also wish to thank Mr. Andy MacVie, Superintendent of the Western New York Division of the NMRA, for arranging this visit. And finally, thanks also to my layout tour partner Mr. Bill Schopf.

Oh my goodness, what an absolutely fantastic layout, mind blowing.
That's what I love about you guys over the other side of the pond, you build cellars and big ones for our model railway layouts. Sadly we do not as it is too expensive, only for rich people.
I love the thick woods made out of round foam and plump foliage, how does that work?
Would look great on my layout, we tend to build sparse woods but I want one like we have round here, thick and lush.
You could do with a tour like this on your layout as its been awhile.
    Regards Chris

What a layout.... Simply an incredibly authentic and enjoyable tour... I was expecting to see the 66 vette sitting by General Mills or PM Junction... I hope to stay in touch and maybe take a live tour in the future. Good luck on your current expansion.

Thanks for the tour Rob, nicely shot too. 👍
As the tour progressed, I noticed more and more similarities to the Bennett RR. Apart from Frank having the second level, the style seems to be quite similar. I'm sure they look very different to someone more familiar with U.S. railroads but, to a Scottish modeller, it looks like you two have the same sort of goals in mind.
    Cheers for now,
    Dougie.

The V&O in the 70’s MR! Oh, the memories! I remember reading years ago that Allen McClelland (spelling?) had decided to dismantle the Virginian & Ohio, and haven’t seen or heard anything else about him since. I’d love to know what he did next! This layout is a work of art, and he’s definitely equaled or surpassed the V&O!

I’m over a year now since first starting on my current layout. And unless I start making an extra 10-20k a year it’ll likely be about 2-4 years before having a new system ready to go, all the remaining benchwork cork bed and track laid and all extensions and modular helix purchased and in place, and even then it’ll take a while to accumulate more steam as I have always modeled BN and ATSF late 70-80’s era and now my layout is 1910-1935. Like this layout a lot and super fun ops

Bob- I use a Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX10 Mark II. It works well for me and has been good for my layout update videos, tour videos, etc. I've considered upgrading but always think "why?" as I am not a professional and this camera does what I need, for both still and video.

      John,
If you watched Rob Bennett’s layout tours in the past he basically follows the same format each time. Start with an overall tour of the layout while interviewing the owner, show some interesting features of the layout, focus on some finished scenes, run a train over the layout, and close with still photos and captions.
I was extremely pleased with the results.

How Ironic! My free-lanced Railroad started in 1976, is also called the Allegheny Central RR.
It's based on the C&O, and my main yard / town is Huntington, WV. Other towns are Thurmond, Hinton, and White Sulphur Springs.
I also model PM, NKP, & some B&O prototypes. My òwn diesel power for Allegheny Central is painted Southern Ry. green & white with black lettering, & yellow trim.
I have several steam locomotives lettered Allegheny Central as well, that the C&O would not have had.
    Very nice layout!
