  • Black Bears are hanging around my pig pen hoping for a free meal! I have it set up with an electric fence and was able to capture some photos of one getting a bit close to the fence...... Hopefully he learned his lesson and wont come back for seconds.

Great video and great workmanship there my friend. Here in northern Canada we have beer problems to including grizzly bears and we put down what we call a welcome mat which is plywood with nails or screws poking up through it so it tears them from even getting close to the fence which is also electrified. When the bear gets aggressive he just tears off the fence but if he can’t get to the fence because of the welcome mat then you’re doing pretty good. We also lay them down outside of the cabins when you close them up for the winter so when the bears come in to hibernate they don’t destroy your cabin or even in the spring they can’t get in

I have used electric fence to protect crops from many animals. You were very wise to get a big charger. Look into simple springs and wire tensioners. They make working with the wire much easier. Also smear a little peanut butter on the wire to train the bear. A zap to the tongue will be very effective. Best wishes.

Thankfully I never had to deal with bears. I live in Texas. I do deal with some not too bright cows in a electric fence. I found that adding a ground wire between the hot wires will keep even the dumb cows in and everything else out. I added more ground rods due to the dryness here. Great job on making use of what you have. Stay safe.

What a beautiful job!, that, “simple little pen”, required n amazing amount of work. From cleaning and brushing the area, to stripping and trimming the timber. Really, before you can even get started on the pen. Congratulations on a job well done.

A friend of mine had a number of bear breakins on his chicken coop. He installed an electric fence and wraps the wire with some bacon strips. He said the fence is a more effective deterrent if the first jolt they get is through the mouth instead of through their fur.

arcticwanderer2000 this bear got it on the nose first hit and never came close again. The pigs made it thru the summer and are in the freezer now. I’m not raising any this season but will for sure next spring. I’ll keep it in mind. Thanks for watching.

Or, I've heard, without adding bear attractant like bacon, just tie some colourful short flagging ribbon in the centre of the line and the bear will likely sniff that and get zapped in the nose or mouth that way (instead of through the insulating fur which may reduce the shock energy as mentioned).

One tip I would give you is attach your ground wire to the fence. This way in dry conditions you know if something hits the fence and hot wire it will be full power.

For what it is worth. If you stretch some wire and have it set up using tight springs and a horn system - Bear or wild animal pushes against this wire and causes wire ends to come into contact with each other and a loud truck horn goes off! Think about it. Not only does it protect the bacon but you get to hear when something is there! @ horn system used.

I would have went with seven lines but if that deters the animals you are trying to keep out then save the money but the door material and quality of hinges is very important that's why I always use stainless steel hinges and bolts especially as they will not rust. The other important thing is making sure the posts are deep enough and that you use a Sonic tube for a good concentration of cement at the bottom on top of drilling a hole through the bottom with a steel rod about 3 ft wide show the pole does not spin but I'm sure you know what you're doing. If your door is not that secure I would definitely put a electronic 4 ft mat in front of each door. I once made an enclosure and did not use electronic fence I used electronic mats all the way around the perimeter and nothing 10 plus after stepping on that mat but then again if you have snow then you would get heated Electric Mets that are 4 ft by 4 ft. After surrounding my house with electric fence about 50 ft away from my house I put electric mats just in case around all of my entry points but I also have a proximity sensor that is 5 ft away from my electric fence so I know if an animal is going to come near my electric fence or just to know that there is something out there that wants to get in. Besides having a very good alarm system I have installed thermal and night vision cameras all around my homes. The home that is most secure is my home in Utah on 135 Acres.

Butcher the hogs yourself. It is really easy. My husband made a wooden engine puller with a come along. You need a few cement blocks, set a metal cattle tank on the blocks big enough for a 220 pig in it. Fill the tank with water. Figure for displacement. Build a fire under the tank. Get the water up to scalding temp. Shoot the pig between eyes baiting them with grain. Scalded until the hair comes off scraping with a thick backed knife blade. You don't need to hang a pig. Butcher in cool fall temps. It takes about 8 hrs to get process one pig to clean gutted carcass that's with clean up. Another whole day to completely butcher into cuts.
While your pigs are small do your research into rendering lard, ham and bacon processing. The lard makes for the best pie crust ever. Pig meat is exceptional because it can be eaten right away. Beef should be hung because when you first kill and gut beef cattle. Especially wild cattle their gut is full of grass. The smell of the grass in cattle's stomach stinks to high heaven. After butchering cattle you won't want to eat any for a full month. I imagine before the processors do cattle they withhold food. Good luck.

I would opt for four wires minimum if you really want to keep the bears out. If two wires, the bear will try and go through. If shocked he will either back up or continue through, and most likely continue through. If four wires he will approach more slowly and more than likely get zapped earlier in the process before trying to scoot through. Tying on bright strips of cloth, typically white, or fluorescent surveyors tape at intervals along the fence row often slows their progress as the flash made by the strips in the wind current unnerves them. If you have horses, it will keep them off the fence as well and stop new arrivals from running through it.

I have seen photos of cars that were ripped open by black bears who looked in the window and recognized the shape of a cooler inside. They have claws like can openers. I have seen a video online here of someone who took a leg of a deer or something, and hung it up, electrified it, and filmed what would happen. The bear kept coming back and testing, until finally disconnecting the electric source and taking off with the reward.
If the bear is hungry enough, or maybe sick or wounded and can't hunt, it will be back for easy prey. I hope this system works.

monday850 this set up worked, two bears came in and both left empty bellies.... although like another viewer said if they want it bad enough they will get it.

Being a retired Marine, know importance of securing an area against predators, man and beast. Just some food for thought, if I may. I'd consider not only the electrification of the pig pin, but at a minimal, attaching consternation wire (razor sharp) on the top logs and install similar logs on bottom and attaching wire there as well. But, the sadistic person I am, I'd wrap the entire pin with consternation wire and LET THE GAMES BEGIN!!!

BTW, I forgot to mention above that I would place wooden boards with LARGE nails on the ground by the fence connected to the electrical wires. And the constatina wire would be connected to the electrical lines as well. If I think of any more cruel and unusual ways to $%^& with the bear, I'll let you know.

Beekeepers have been leading the way with this for years...but bears have always figured their way around it..….To avoid the electric fence, one bear, in South Georgia, dug under the wire and into the hives! Next to feral hogs, bears are, possibly, the next most destructive animals around....sometime they appear to destroy things just for the hell of it......they can wreck a water melon field or, even, a corn field.....intelligence and strength are their allies.

I had to feed the 4 horses in a open field, shit, ran 25ft, bucket drop, horses are on my ass. Continued, ran, 25ft, dropped another then did a huey, dropped 1 more, and the frigging Hackney was trying to kill me. I managed to drop it 15ft from fence and closed lined the 3ft electric fence. Burn, left a nice mark on my neck, not to mention it stopped my in my tracks, body slammed and ended up on the other side of the fence. Good times. LOL Good video, bacon rules.
