The popularity of Cloud Strife cannot be overstated! Ever since he appeared as the main protagonist of Final Fantasy 7, he was just catapulted into video game lore and his rivalry with Sephiroth has become legendary.
Within this video, we're going to run-through some interesting facts maybe you don't know about Cloud, with some focussed on his creation by Tetsuya Nomura and others relating to his appearance within Advent Children!

So yeah, delivery boy was missing from his skill set!

Yes, I still don't get how he got that reputation. It's so different from his actual characterization in the original game.
What I always wondered about was the fact that Cloud actually suffers from motion sickness (which leads to a very funny scene in Crisis Core), yet he is still able to ride on a motorcycle and to drive the submarine in the FF7 maingame. It got all cleared up when I read that it's only the case when Cloud's not the driver. When he's driving, he's not suffering from it.

Makes sense. Related in a way....when I drive I can drive for hours without stopping or getting tired. But when I'm a passenger I can't stay awake past the driveway.
as far as im aware he stopped having motion sickness because of his high mako levels. mako gives advanced healing n shit so it prob canceled out his previous conditions when he got his mako.
I just commented this same thing, lol! I always kind of liked the idea of Cloud as a bit of a country bumpkin so unused to machinery and moving fast that cars and trains made him sick :)
SQAURE took full advantage of the spikey hair anime character trend that hit the U.S HARD in the mid to late 90's...for the longest time growing up I knew FF7 as the spikey hair, church girl and guy with the gun-arm game.
Or ya know...that didn't actually hit the western world until the next decade.
@@thedarkness125 No, it was already gaining a footing during the 90s with the advent of Dragon Ball Z's localization in English territories (with the rest of the western world already having A LOT of anime, including DB/DBZ, already dubbed in various languages much earlier on).
Coupled with the fact that FFVII was the first mainline Final Fantasy to get a global release (rather than be translated just for NTSC territories) and you get a game with very familiar badass imagery to most of the world.

A lot of people call Cloud "Emo" he isn't "Emo". He actually suffres from PTSD aka Post Tramatic Stress Disorder. As a result of experiencing his friends and mother being killed by his formal Role Model. As well as had a sickness that could have killed him. And was expermented on.
Note Cloud calls himself an EX-SOLDIER. In FFVII he is 21. He became a SOLDIER at age 14. So from age 14 to 21 (7 years) he had experienced ALL OF THIS. If you think anyone would be Mentally sound after experiencing ALL OF THIS as a teenager/Young Adult. Maybe you haven't played the games, are just going off of what the haters or ill informed said on the internet, Dont like the game at all or don't know the character well enough to make a judgment call on his personality and him as a character.
i got all of this information from simply watching clips of the movie, playing the remake /seeing the cut scenes in said remake and reading the character's profile. I am a NEWBIE to Final Fantasy and Did more research. And even I a NEW FAN can see that it's deeper than him just being Overly emotional or "Emo". He went through so much trama in such a short period of time. It took 7 years for him to finally get out of that hellish situation. You as an ADULT in wouldn't even be the same if you had experienced all of this NOW as an adult. Now imagine all of this happening when you are a 14/15/16/17/18 year old KID. 😕
Cloud never joined SOLDIER, he was an infantryman in shinra’s army. He just absorbed Zack’s memories causing him to think that he was in SOLDIER.
Only neandathrals call Cloud emo.
I feel like Cloud gets more and more moody with every game. In FFVIIR, he's very serious, but in the original, he says phrases such as "hoo boy."
Funnily enough, he also said “hoo boy” in the remake

I blame Nomura. FF7 Cloud was a bullied nerd who suffered mental torture at the hands of Shinra that resulted in a literally broken psyche, but he wasn't an angsty jerk. He was witty, sardonic, and not afraid to crack jokes. Any angst came from his identity crisis, wherein his brain had literally convinced him that he was someone else, but once he overcomes that, by the end of the game, he's the type of dude who says shit like, "Let's mosey."
Kingdom Hearts reinventing the character as a brooding mystery man was fine, because he's technically not even the same person in those games. But then Advent Children came along and just kinda... reused his Kingdom Hearts personality, which then carried over into Dissidia and the like.
Somewhere along the line, Nomura got it into his head that Cloud is the franchise sadsack, and that's a severe oversimplification at best and a flat-out misinterpretation at worst.

Similarly, can't agree he is even a sadsack in KH or Dissidia, that's Squall. That's most definitely Squall. Cloud has quite friendly moments in both but has a reserved side.

Cloud and Sephiroth definitely had some berserk influence whether the writers admit it or not. The betrayal of a long white haired angelic looking man with a sleek sword vs another man filled with rage that has a giant broadsword.

Key people got moved around or leave that led to others being moved up and changing around...
Like, Nomura was just the character designer behind the original FF7, he wasn't the director, story writer, gameplay writer, etc.
Like, take it as artistic liberty and Nomura may have actually had more of a say in the game than I or even you personally thought.
Like, I don't take Nomura as the guy who really shaped Cloud's character, since, FF7, for it's writing staff and direction, had A LOT of baggage from it's development team, especially Hironobu Sakaguchi, the game's director...
That while, Nomura had a hand in creating the final character of cloud, I took his rendition of cloud as sort of a retcon of the original character... But I'm just conjecturing... My username's just FF18Cloud, not a guy who actually did anything with the game's development...

I feel like "shut up and take my gil" sums up every time I go to a shop when they have a dialogue before they buy/sell, though I can't think of a final fantasy game other than XV and Rin from X at the moment that had those scenarios
I love the Fusion Sword so much, I just called it Fusion Buster Sword, I just love the inner workings and mechanics of it :D

To add on, that's why I don't mind the original graphics to FF7...it's a time capsule of it's era of 90's anime style period... FF8 was hard to get used to for me because I was too used to running around looking at overextended Spikes @ the back of Clouds's head..I was one of them ppl who FF7 was my 1st RPG ever... It's just that cartoony/anime vibe Cloud had that u loved playing him as a main character... Plus he had a huge ass sword that was bigger then him lmaooo .... I look at FF7 alot different now BUT growing up that's why I looked at the game.

I don't mind the graphics either, even though it wasn't my first JRPG/RPG by any means. I just recently started playing it when I decided to check out some of the old school games. I love the game, the graphics definitely didn't age well, the story is great, and the characters are as amazing as I heard. I can definitely appreciate it for what it has done. The only thing I don't like is what they did with Vincent as a party member. So cool but so useless in terms of others party members

more like the emo wanna be of rpgs. ^^;; i mean his whole story is about being a fanboy of sephiroth, joining SOLIDER, only to be an underling. Getting saved by zak then takes zaks identity, only to try and date zaks fiance, who knew cloud was impersonating her dead lover. Wasn't my cup of tea. if anything sephiroth was a good villain due to him mostly finding out he was a science experiment, and going ape shit from the revelation that he was maybe a monster.

I understand, every single console I have purchased over the last ten years has been in the name of Kingdom Hearts titles, lol! And then I get a PS4 several years ago to finally play KH3 last year only ONCE because I was so disappointed with it and it almost feels like a wasted purchase. Final Fantasy XV, half-baked as it was initially upon release, still was more amazing than KH3. Actually...I really love XV, and that alone does make the console worth it.

the only other actual fighting game out there, not including Dissidia. where you could play as Cloud, Tifa, Sephiroth, Zack (cloud skin swap) Vincent and Yuffie was a game called ehrgeiz

We need more Final Fantasy Characters in Dissidia
Though it would be cool to get more FF characters in smash, and there is an absurd amount of potential in doing that, its never going to happen. Its pretty unfortunate that they are wasting character slots with echo fighters instead of unique characters, when they have not only nintendo, but final fantasy characters to work with. Not to mention, a lot of the characters write themselves, for example, just for the heck of it, I came up with an idea for incorporating Tifa into Smash, where she would have the same limit system as Cloud, but no ability to charge it manually, however she would have her ultimate weapon hidden mechanics from FFVII where she would do more damage, and have more knock back the higher the limit gauge is (I did come up with all of her actual attacks and what not, a lot of which were heavily inspired by cptn Falcon from the original smash, but I'm assuming that people don't actually care about the crap that I come up with when my mind is wandering aimlessly. :)).
I was hoping Square would let Lightning in. Atleast let Cloud have a special attack where hes on the back of a chocobo

Squares latest report to shareholders shows they expect a very big spike in revenue towards the end of 2019. When asked what the reason for the spike will be, they said it was classified. Remake in 2019?
There's also the avengers project they've been quiet about for something like 2 years.
As Jackson stated, it's most likely the avengers project. FFXIV just had an addon, so I don't think we'll see another one so soon. And FF7 is probably coming in 2020

In certain versions of FF VII u can actually see Clouds art style change in cut scenes. In the vast majority of versions they updated the earlier cut scenes so he looks the same.
Cloud was in Ehrgeiz too.
I haven't had a gaming system for like 10 years, but I will be getting one when the FF7 remake is released, absolutely can't wait. I lived and breathed the original, that game touched my soul, definitely want to have that feeling again.

FF1-7, FF Advanced Tactics, Tactics, WotL, and the movie Advent Children got me hooked in Final Fantasy franchise, definitely an unforgettable part of my childhood including Cloud my favorite character of the franchise.

Miyamoto Musashi & Sasaki Kojiro
- Musashi thrusts at Kojiro with a blunt wooden boat oar
- Kojiro cleaves through the oar with his famous upswing, leaving a sharp tip on the oar
- Musashi follows through on the thrust, driving the tip of the oar into Kojiro's throat
There are a few variations of how it played out, but all things considered, it was more of a farce than an honorable duel, and even Musashi himself reflected on it with regret when he realized he had prevented one of the worlds greatest swordsmen from ever passing on his teachings to an apprentice.
This is the same Musashi who slaughtered katana-wielding samurai with a pair of wooden blades. I think at some point, anything is fair game.
@@danielpayne1597 I think when he was young he just wanted to see if there was anyone who was capable of defeating him, and he was constantly disappointed in that regard. However his duel with Kojiro took place when he was older and was starting to realize the pointlessness of killing for sport. And your absolutely correct, if it wasn't fair game, Kojiro wouldn't have accepted the duel.

My personal headcanon interpretation of the Cloud birthday discrepancy is that the 19th is Zack's birthday, which Cloud thinks is his because he conflates their histories together. It works because as far as I know Zack has no official birthday.

I don't know if it's been said, but another thing about his birthday, that the first iteration of it in Japan was in the International Version that comes with a 4 disc that's a guide to the game. In it, it states that his birthday is August 11th. I figure, much like a bunch of other things, the Western team took liberties and made it the 19th, instead of asking.
To be fair Zachs final hair by the end of crisis core was almost identical to the original cloud concept that Nomura made

In the Final Fantasy Ultimania that covers VII, there's a piece of concept art of Cloud's mom stating that she is 33 years old. If Cloud was 15 at the time of her death, it means she was just 18 at the time of his birth. Not a huge revelation, but surprisingly nonetheless. Always assumed she was much older given the flashback dialog.

Additional Fact = Cloud actually inherited his spiky haircut from his mother, who also has spiky hair during the Kalm scene that happens after the party leaves Midgar for the first time.
@Chips HandonOne sees this sort of thing a lot in fictional works like anime, where bonds are shown through similar features on the bodies of characters.

7:36 Perhaps that's the prototype modelling? (I don't know where that image originates) The released design only has one bottom sword which is hollow internally for half the main sword to slot into. As you can see at 7:52

I was a bit late to the party so Final Fantasy VII was my first Final Fantasy game I played. It wasn't my first RPG, that was The Legend Of Zelda when it was released back in 1987 on the NES. Up until that point I had never played a game like Final Fantasy VII before, & I was totally hooked. Awesome Characters, Awesome Story, Badassed Battle Mechanics, & Badassed Music. From then on I've been a Final Fantasy Fan! Thank You For Another Great Video!

Oooohhhh!!! :O I never thought of that!!! Hold on, checking Zack's bday real quick. *does quick search* Nothing on the internet, but I think my sister has a magazine that had CC as the cover story or was just all about CC back when it was coming out, and it had bios on all the main characters--Zack, Seph, Gen, Geal, Aerith, Cloud--but I can't remember if it had their birth dates. :/ Will update this comment when I can get to my computer where I have scans of the aforementioned saved. >;3

This explains why we see Cloud so often use that hugely telegraphed overhead swing that always made no sense to me. Now it does.

How about Ehrgeiz and the Forsaken Dungeon? How the NPC in the hotel say that a man with blonde hair came with a man with silver hair? And the fact that you can find FF7 weapons in the Dungeon?
And for some reason they're sharing a hotel room... hmmm... fanfic ensues...
have you ever blade brave fencer musashi? i think nomura did the character design. but if you look at it, he looks like cloud’s early design. he also carry a large sword(lumina). he also wield a katana, too. the fusion sword. that game released 1 year after ffvii. you also get a the ffviii demo with it.
These birthdays for Cloud would make him a Leo. Final Fantasy Tactics says he's an Aquarian making his bday late January-early toid February.
I heard that Superbot tried to get him into PSASBR before Smash bros got him, but were told no by SE. (They apparently gave them permission to use Lightning instead, but she was never added to the game.) I also heard that Nintendo originally wanted to used Bartz, but went with Cloud because of his overwhelming popularity.
