When he told the story of shooting Nicky black with a riot control shotgun in the head in broad daylight was possibly the best story ever told on TH-cam. I remember how big this flex by Strawberry was at that time. He was on the TV and radio circuit making his case that he deserved bigger money and anted to test the market. When he signed with the LA Dodgers it made them front runners for division again after finishing right behind the eventual World Series Champion Cincinnati Reds. It just took an amazing run by a then Cinderella Atlanta Braves at the start of their National League dominance.

      @marcellbrickey348 I partially mistyped/misspoke and also just didn't word what I was trying to say properly, which created some confusion. So that's my bad.
      Prime was on the 95 team. Strawberry arrived during the summer of 94. But by the time Sanders got to the Giants, Bonds was still there and Dusty, and that was it.
      What I was trying to say is that the giants were clearly building onto something and it would have been nice to see it through with all those guys from 94 to trickle into 95 and 96 and make a run. They had Willie Mcgee and Darren Lewis too. Royse Clayton, Matt Williams.

      @@joojoobaw From a March 14, 2002 NY Post article
      "Former Yankee slugger Darryl Strawberry was bounced from a court-ordered drug-treatment program three days after he had sex with a female resident, according to a court report released yesterday.
      The eight-time All-Star had been put under a “behavior contract” at the Phoenix House residential rehab center last October after repeated rules infractions - which meant he had to shape up or be shipped out to jail.
      Despite the contract, Strawberry continued to flout the rules, according to court documents which detailed how he was caught:
      * Carrying unknown medications - and swallowing them before they could be checked by a staffer, whom he cursed out.
      * Kissing a female resident.
      * Being disruptive. Asked to leave a group seminar after interrupting another resident, he snarled at a counselor, “Cracker ass, kiss my ass. You’re not God.”
      * Smoking.
      The last straw came Saturday, when he had sex with a female resident - which he admitted Tuesday to his probation officer, court documents state.
      Strawberry was sent to Phoenix House last May for two years of rehab after he fled another court-ordered treatment program and went on a four-day drug binge.
      It was his fifth violation of probation since an April 1999 arrest for cocaine possession.
      He was told at the time that he had to complete the Phoenix House program to avoid an 18-month jail term.
      Strawberry’s wife, Charisse, was reluctant to discuss her husband’s latest fall from grace.
      THE LAST STRAW
      On March 12, 2002, Strawberry admitted to this officer that he had had sex with a female resident on March 9, 2002.
      On October 16, 2001 Strawberry was placed on a Phoenix House Behavior Contract, for breaking the following rules:
      * Smoking and supplying residents with cigarettes.
      * Having at least $140.00 cash on hand and giving money to residents in Primary and Phase II.
      * Having other residents purchase cigarettes and making telephone calls.
      * Autographing baseball cards and clothing.
      * Exchanging two (2) baseballs for cigarettes to a person outside the community.
      * Making indirect threats on several occasions.
      * Accepting cigarettes from his brother on a visit, when both were informed that any such transaction was not acceptable.
      * Misuse of telephone privilege.
      * Shaving his head against Program Rules.
      * Contracting and exploiting himself on others."

    "280 Homers by age 29 & people were comparing you to Hank Aaron"... FACE PALM
    I always loved Strawberry, was one of my favorite players as a kid, but no rational person was "comparing him to Hank Aaron".
    Strawberry isn't even in the Top 20 for most HR's by age 29. A Rod hit over 400 HR's by age 29. Griffey Jr. hit 398 HR's by age 29, Jimmie Foxx hit 379 HR's by age 29. The point is nobody that knows anything about baseball was comparing Strawberry to the late, great Hank Aaron.

    • @CMD422
      @CMD422 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That was Strawberry's 9th season! At that time he had the 8th most Home Runs for someone in their first 9 seasons. Aaron had 298 with 900 more AB's. He wasn't far off! Aaron HR per AB was 17.81, Strawberry was 15.7, Junior was 15.6 with 294

    • @acason4
      @acason4 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@CMD422
      How does your response negate anything I said? I'm aware that it was his 9th season, but that's IRRELEVANT! The point is by AGE 29, how many seasons is completely irrelevant. Strawberry is currently 27th in most Homers by age 29, but even if I remove all 11 players that accomplished that AFTER the fact he'd still be OUTSIDE of the Top 15 in "most HR's by age 29" therefore making the comparison DUMB! There's a list of 16 players ahead of him on that list (at that time) & Strawberry had already been injury prone missing an average of 20 games per season (178 total in 9 seasons) which is a huge factor to a players ceiling so to think he was comparable to Hank Aaron knowing that a players careers starts to dip at the age of 30 just doesn't make sense. I get it that Strawberry was a prolific HR hitter through age 29, but comparing him to Hank Aaron who at that time had already retired hitting 755 HR's is just silly. Even as a kid (I was 10 years old at that time) I would've scoffed at the notion of comparing Strawberry to Hank Aaron because that comparison has to assume he's going to play 20+ season & keep pace even though Strawberry has already struggled to stay healthy & he was hitting the age where most players start a slow decline.
      FYI: your math is wrong (by age 29 ratio):
      Ruth: 3,567 AB/284 HR's = 12.55
      Stanton: 4,253 AB/308 HR's = 13.81
      Pujols: 5,146 AB/366 HR's = 14.06
      Rodriguez: 5,958 AB/409 HR's = 14.56
      Foxx: 5,551 AB/379 HR's = 14.64
      Griffey Jr.: 5,832 AB/398 HR's = 14.65
      Mantle: 5,518 AB/374 HR's = 14.75
      Trout: 4,656 AB/310 HR's = 15.01
      Strawberry: 4,408 AB/280 HR's = 15.74
      Aaron: 5,940 AB/342 HR's = 17.36
      There's way more I could include, but this is a list of some of the players on most HR's "by age 29" list.
      Also, no one is using HR's per AB (even though I think it's the true measure of best HR hitter) as the metric when making that comparison. What they were attempting /compare is how many HR's were hit by the age of 29. Hank Aaron didn't hit 755 HR's because his HR per AB ratio was the best as it's actually not even Top 20 All-Time. He hit 755 HR's because he played 22 seasons in the league & averaged 150 AB's per season/34 HR's. Aaron's longevity is what made his legacy, not his HR per AB ratio.

    I saw Strawberry hit a massive HR at Shea in 1990. The next day on WFAN they had a call-in show asking fans to reminisce about the best dingers they’ve ever witnessed. I’m glad he got clean and he’s not a wreck like Dykstra.

    Back in 2012 or 2013 or so I met him in an Applebees parking lot in St Charles, Mo lol (next county west of St Louis County). I think his mother lived there for a time maybe. Just walked up to him and said "Hello Mr. Strawberry." Talked for just a few. He asked me a couple questions about what I did ect. Nothing more than a min maybe as we were leaving. Being from St Louis, I am a huge baseball fan so I instantly knew who he was. As we were finishing up we shook hands and as he was leaving said "Nice hat" lol. Had my Cardinals hat on. (A team he did not like haha) Awesome guy. Hell of a player.

    Doc Gooden and Darryl created an eternal connection and great memories for NY Baseball fans. Even for us Yankee fans. For myself, it was the only period where I followed and attended Met games. For the youngsters, if they hadn't been caught up in the drug "war" in the 80's ( i.e when the U.S Gov't flooded black neighborhoods with drugs to finance international proxy wars for stealing resources) they both would likely have been Hall of famers. Straw who hit 335 while missing major parts of 6 seasons with drug and cancer problems had can't miss Hall of fame talents. Doctor K had HOF abilities too. I'm glad they will be honored at SHEA this year. ( a little Yankee fan dig😁)

      Crack and cocaine are the same damn thing. When your hooked on snorting cocaine you are better off smoking the sht as it is absolutely destroying your nose. Worst headaches you can imagine as your nose deteriorates. I've done both and was snorting an 8 ball a day for about a year. Told myself that I was either going to quit or start smoking.. couldn't take the pain anymore whole face hurt to the touch. Bloody noses daily your not sleeping just like a crack head. Same sht but worse honestly

    Growing up a fan of Strawberry; sadly I always associated his name w/ cocaine problems. Interesting to hear he consumed amphetamines (Adderall) during games; makes sense as the focus/concentration while batting would be lasered-in. I'm sure many players now use w/ a valid prescription.
