Not winning American Idol was the real win for him. Dude was obviously cut out for something bigger than that and this just shows you he did way better than being obligated to record albums for them as a stipulation.

I know people who were involved with padding the numbers for American idol that year. Long story short, the same entertainment lawyers for AI were also the same ones for Fuel, and they wanted to get him in FUEL for monetary reasons.
