The song is simply about watching a loved one (whether it be a romantic partner, friend, or family member) change negatively and how it's one of the most heartbreaking things you'll ever see in your life.
Going off the video it makes think of that feeling when the sun's coming up and everyone is strung out. The drugs are wearing off and the hangover is kicking in. It's not a fun feeling.
This song has a deep melancholy to it - you can tangibly feel the anxiety/sadness/depression in it, but it’s beautifully presented with overwhelming energy. I’ve always been drawn to the way they express these emotions simultaneously
I’ve seen this video a dozen times. But today I feel as though I’m seeing it through fresh eyes. At first I thought they were playing amongst the party people, but looking closer, I can see that they are all apart from them. It’s like they’re experiencing someone else’s memory of the events of that night. The muted color schemes, the pictures within pictures and each band member seemingly green screened into different scenes adds to the surreal and dream-like atmosphere of the video. My belief is that it’s not about any particular person, but just change in general. Change can be hard and painful, but stagnation is hell on earth. Going to the same bar or the same party pad with the same people and doing the same things over and over again for years can get tiring. You wake up one day and wonder where all that time went. Forward motion is the only way to overcome that stagnation. I think this is Chino looking back on those memories, and being painfully aware of all of this.

The better version of depression, this makes me wanna live to the fullest, and makes me depressed, but it's soothing, appealing to my ears, violent, scary, insane, drives me crazy, smacks my mind, depresses me, but I'm already depressed, but negative and negative is never negative, it's positive. So this song just makes me wanna thrive my life, I'm living myself inside my head more than ever. This song is life
This song is like that feeling when you finally give yourself towards something you once said you would never do only to discover who you really were all along.. "i watched a change in you, it's like you never had wings"
My friend loved this song. Was the first person to show it to me. He passed last month from suicide. Ive been really listening to the lyrics the past couple weeks and can now see how deeply this song related to his life. “I watched you change, its like you never had wings” couldnt be more true. Slowly depression takes over a person until before you know it, theyre consumed. I wish I would have stayed in touch with this person. I hope theyre in a better place. 24 is way too young to die. I haven’t felt the same since their passing. RIP friend. Life is cruel.
I lost 2 of my closest friends from overdose and suicide. The pain will never leave you. When you need to cry, cry. Do things you two talked about doing. Take his memory with you wherever you go. It's part of you now. And when you feel the need. Talk to him. He's listening. Believe me, he's listening. Turn this into motivation! Look what I did! Look, that's my son/daughter! It's a sad thing. And it'll never leave. So, when you're thinking of him in sad time's. Think of gum in happy time's! Carry his memory, like a true friend would do. And don't worry, you WILL see him again. I know this as fact. You will see him again. Have peace in you. Only you can do it. Only you...

My house has mice mold & roaches & im sick I won't clean cause of my ocd & it makes me depressed to see all of it so I just live in it. When I was shot maggots crawled around my arm. I don't want to die I want to rot & suffer & be disgusting.
When I first met my boyfriend in 2011 he said "for some reason this song reminds me of you, the line about the angel wings, but I don't mean it in a bad way" 12 almost 13 years later and everything we went through and I listen back to it now, he wasn't wrong when he said those words to me, he just didnt know it yet, but sadly, I already knew he wasn't wrong because I was secretly struggling with a tremendous heroin addiction that only got worse over the next two years living with him and his family and when it finally came to light, I already destroyed everything around us. But he still stuck with me, even with a few more years of addiction, lies, mistakes and struggles. Im finally doing good now, just celebrated 8 years in my program to stay clean and blessed to say he is still here sticking with me by my side to this day❤ and have also seen deftones in concert together 😊
It's not easy but it gets easier as the years pass. My wife stuck by me the same way and I'm eternally grateful. Still making eighteen years later. Congrats on your sobriety
This was the second Deftones track I heard after Kim Dracula in the mid 2000s. Needless to say, I became a die hard fan. Chino's voice is so intense. Only 90s kids can truly understand the power and magic of Deftones.
Nirvana, Alice in chains, these guys, not a coincidence that when mainstream music is as fake and bullsh!t as it is people like real people you know actual human beings YEARN for the best forms of self expression
not really a key change. it's just the third chord of the scale, eb major, which is the relative major to c minor - the key the song's played in. that's why it gives u that uplifting feeling i suppose. def hits u hard and i love it too
@@blackswan1301 no it's not. a key change by definition is the change from one tonality to another, which is not what's happening here. the chord eb major is still in the same tonality of c minor
Always loved that dark mysterious sound about this band, it’s like it slowly draws you in without you realizing it. Next thing you know you’re entranced by their magic
As a 16 year old right now with no friends and one of the most quiet in my school they only thing that keeps me busy is deftones. Keeps me distracted from dark thoughts and makes me think there is a light out there but it's only accessible with change.
The only way you can truly change is to be born again. I hear music differntly now when i incorperate my religon and positivity. Change, all i need is you, ect. All i need is god, change my walk from the dark to the light.
Your 16... Your whole life is in front of you. Do the very best you can in school and focus on what you want to do after and take life by the horns and go do that shit
My wife has her own business for 6 years... Got into real estate last year and took a new job last week as project manager renovating the houses she'll get to sell... She grew up in the hood in Dallas. Only white girl in her school.. life's a bitch. Fuck it
Witnessing my mom get lost in alcoholism from the age of 12 to over 7 years later, the lyrics “I watched you change into a fly I looked away you were on fire” are so accurate it hurts. This song and Scars by Papa Roach are the only songs I’ve found that portray the disparity of losing someone to addiction
I’m so sorry. I’m going through it with my mom. It really sucks. It sucks that they have to want help. And acknowledge that they need it. It’s something I wouldn’t wish on anybody.
Have to confess, to be a teenager in the year White Pony came out is one of the best things i remember coming of age. AND the music video is like a swan song for its generation. A ferawell party to the old state of world, like, you had it, and now its time to leave it behind and things have to move further. Lyrics and melody just gives me that feeling of bittersweet impassive last moment with something that is gone and it ends with break away. This vibe to me is heavily felt in the record and it came out on the wave of very special moment in gen x history : Matrix, Fight Club, Lost Highway, Eyes Wide Shut. The time of social dystopian exposition, edgy fashion, , internet, anime, electronic music, heroin chic, rebellion, occultism, consumerism complex, cynicism of wealth, escape from banal and emotional deplete. You really felt the change (bum tss) and this was first time i heard a heavy band sound exactly how i felt, like i was a part of something fresh, advanced, creative.

This song really embodies that 90s feeling. The music, the fashion, the movies. Not even in a 100% positive way either, but pure nostalgia to a time where not everything was perfect but it was real. A time we will never get back.
@@simonberthiaume6585obviously the sound in 2000 is going to have a 90's sound to it, versus be the sound we heard by, say, 2005. This song is definitely a 90's vibe.

Yes it sure does, i love it. Im a bit older than most here in the comments i guess, but that means ive had a lot of life's experiences, good and bad. I think its a super song, and ive always loved that huge sound Deftones have, the guitars just roar.
This reminds me of when my older brother told his new baby momma that i died in a train crash when i was younger then i popped up into his life uninvited
This song hits different when I realized that years after our breakup, she glowed so much and I essentially became a doomer and spiralled down in self-loathing. She's happy now, way happier. Edit: 2yrs have passed, I'm not getting better.
I was two years clean relapsed a week ago and I've been in the hospital for 3 days almost lost my hand it's funny how certain songs that made an impact on you when you heard them for the first time can hit you different at different points in your life things will get better my friend I promise

It's kind of crazy looking back. This song was an official hit. I can't even imagine a song like this playing on today's radio, let alone it being a hit. What happened???
We had the closest thing to the grunge scene of the 90's where alternative music (not just numetal) got popular again. Give it 5 years and more alternative music will be on the radio again - it's a reaction to lame music.
Prodigy Jones Of course you heard this on the radio. Stations have to play old stuff like this because there aren't any new hits like this anymore. Bands like this and music like this used to be everyday. Now they are regulated to one specific station given a specific time slot. Where are the NEW hard music hits? Honestly, the last new hard music hit I remember was System's BYOB. These songs weren't niche songs back in the early 2000s, they were real hits that could be heard everywhere by everyone. Not just rockers dug this kind of music, everyone used to be into it. Outside of metalcore and industrial, I really don't hear any new hard bands anymore. It is very interesting to me how those heavier melodic sounds have disappeared from the mainstream.
I remember riding the metro bus home from school one day back in the year 2000. I was 15 and we were living in a hotel at the time and there was a Kmart across the street. I got bored and walked over, looked through some CDs, and walked out with White Pony. When I got back I sat out on the balcony with my Discman and listened to the whole album start to finish. That day I became a Deftones fan for life, and now over 23 years later I still listen to White Pony from beginning to end sometimes just to get a little bit of that feeling from the first time I heard it!
A middle school boyfriend introduced me to the deftones and I haven’t listened to them in years he passed away from a heroin overdose and this song just came on randomly and watching this video it hit different now that I’ve been there got 80 days clean from heroin after a 3 year battle. Never thought to much about the video and lyrics till now.
I cry when I hear this. After so many years of feeling dead inside due to addiction this brings everything to the surface. Time wasted, relationships burned, friends who've died, everything that's been buried.

All I can think about while listening to this song is how you can be so dependent to alcohol, drugs or any substance to the point of changing you completly, turning you into a simple "fly" and end up without wings, completly crippled, left to die and being the definition of misery that people despise... I really think this is what chino was trying to put into the song. Everyone tells me different ideas about it, but what comes to my mind is that. Kinda like alcohol or any substance singing this song to you, like reminding you how they own you and how that will never change.
What always comes to my mind is some kind of fear When a girl is still free, not single but young and free, then it is so amazing how *alive* they can be, life is literally glowing through their skin But what happens after moving in somewhere together? It seems to me this is a bit like an imprisonment, described by those "i took you home, set you on a glass, pulled off your wings, then i laughed" Maybe it is because of my lack of experience And yeah, this video speaks rather for your theory But this is always what comes to my mind with this song
Thank you for that,i think ur right,or maybe its about anything or anyone that ruins your true pure self, while they stand there resenting you for letting it happen
I experienced this song in my life... I met a girl years ago who was into the rave scene and hard drugs and dragged me into this house party lifestyle... I loved the lifestyle at the time but after a while of being on drugs and alcohol 24/7 I became burnt out and realized the hollow nature of it all..... I saw the fights, the cheating, the overall dysfunctional youth drowned in sex, drugs and mayhem but it ended horrible for alot of people I knew... Godbless deftones for showing the truth of partying in a song Evan tho they were on hard drugs at the time :/
When I found this song I saw myself changing for the better. I came out of such a dark place it felt amazing. Life was so good I’ll never forget the fall and winter of 2023.
I listen to this track 10 times a day. The beauty and intensity shines through. It will never age. I do not find it depressing in the slightest. Just superb.
A very different interpretation: the song is about how your influence may impact someone. That you staying in a person's life may limit their abilities and keep them grounded/trapped yet at the same time weirdly enjoying it. And you realizing that you're doing it, but being a slave to the process and in doing so you're willing to sacrifice your own life in return for keeping that person's wings cut off because you've convinced yourself, that without you they won't feel alive and that's reason enough to remain a toxic fuck. And you understand that you're being a toxic fuck, but you can't bring yourself to let that person fly.
Its all about how change is inevitable, something we must all go through. Sounds like he's stricken by someones ability to adapt seamlessly as if they'd never had wings to begin with after he stripped them of their flight. Now he himself has been changed himself to have seen such an anomaly.
Lyrics (over the Tecates): I watched you change Into a fly I looked away You were on fire I watched a change in you It's like you never had wings Now, you feel so alive I've watched you change I took you home Set you on the glass I pulled off your wings Then I laughed I watched a change in you It's like you never had wings Now, you feel so alive I've watched you change It's like you never had wings Aah, aah, aah, aah Aah, aah, aah, aah Aah, aah I look at the cross Then I look away Give you the gun Blow me away I watched a change in you It's like you never had wings Now, you feel so alive I've watched you change Now, you feel alive You feel alive You feel alive I've watched you change It's like you never had wings Aah, aah, aah, aah Aah, aah, aah, aah Aah, aah You've changed You've changed You've changed
I know people love the OG soundtracks to animes, but funimation really knocked it out of the park when they chose the music for the couple movies dbz had exclusive soundtacks.
The song is simply about watching a loved one (whether it be a romantic partner, friend, or family member) change negatively and how it's one of the most heartbreaking things you'll ever see in your life.
You described it well
Could be about yourself and you changing, that’s how I think of it…
Or being a 28 year old predator taking the wings off of a 17 year old, as in my experience.
Yes, I agree. This song reminds me of her.
yeah it’s about drugs
I love how this song is interpreted differently to everyone. People think it’s seductive, sad, etc. I love this song so much
I think it's about abuse. His abuse of a loved one. And the sadness and guilt he feels upon watching the fruits of his labour.
Going off the video it makes think of that feeling when the sun's coming up and everyone is strung out. The drugs are wearing off and the hangover is kicking in. It's not a fun feeling.
It being seductive probably has something to do with Queen Of the Damned.
That's the magic of music for you 🎶 ♡

Ive been really listening to the lyrics the past couple weeks and can now see how deeply this song related to his life. “I watched you change, its like you never had wings” couldnt be more true. Slowly depression takes over a person until before you know it, theyre consumed. I wish I would have stayed in touch with this person. I hope theyre in a better place. 24 is way too young to die. I haven’t felt the same since their passing. RIP friend. Life is cruel.
😂
My deepest condolences.
My deepest condolences, death in general is never easy, let alone suicide. I send you my love and prayers, and wish you well. ❤
Sorry for your loss
Only you...
When i overdose i want a deftones song to be playing when they find me...that way they know i was having a good time

Passion, embracing the ugliness to find the beauty...
Congrats. Addiction is hell. You're doing great.

This was the second Deftones track I heard after Kim Dracula in the mid 2000s. Needless to say, I became a die hard fan. Chino's voice is so intense. Only 90s kids can truly understand the power and magic of Deftones.
it seems to me like Deftones music goes against time. It is hard to explain, but they don't sound old or new to me
One might say they're "timeless".

The key-change at 2:08 is sublime. It's the "change" the song is referring to...when everything changes including the key.
not really a key change. it's just the third chord of the scale, eb major, which is the relative major to c minor - the key the song's played in. that's why it gives u that uplifting feeling i suppose. def hits u hard and i love it too

The only way you can truly change is to be born again. I hear music differntly now when i incorperate my religon and positivity. Change, all i need is you, ect. All i need is god, change my walk from the dark to the light.

Its eye opening and honestly tugs at your heart when your lover of seven years tells you that this song reminds her of you...
It's kind of crazy looking back. This song was an official hit. I can't even imagine a song like this playing on today's radio, let alone it being a hit. What happened???
Simple. Music sucks now
We had the closest thing to the grunge scene of the 90's where alternative music (not just numetal) got popular again. Give it 5 years and more alternative music will be on the radio again - it's a reaction to lame music.
+Luis Rivera (Buddy) This plays on the radio. That's how I found it. Get your head out of your smelly, nostalgia ridden ass.
+Prodigy Jones Gotta dig deep for that kind of station
Being a Deftones fan for decades brought me here.
+Anthony King Then what are you even doing here bruh?

That bassline in the verses are so good. It put you in a trance, and later BOOM! the chorus hits you like a truck. Beautiful.
I've always wondered about the meaning to the song. I like this idea though. 👍🏻
opalfruits99 "I pulled off your wings" meaning he shot her up, put her on heroin. ..
What always comes to my mind is some kind of fear
When a girl is still free, not single but young and free, then it is so amazing how *alive* they can be, life is literally glowing through their skin
But what happens after moving in somewhere together? It seems to me this is a bit like an imprisonment, described by those "i took you home, set you on a glass, pulled off your wings, then i laughed"
Maybe it is because of my lack of experience
And yeah, this video speaks rather for your theory
But this is always what comes to my mind with this song
I've watched .so many of my friends change, thanks to drugs ! now I'm changing too !!! please pray for me!!!
They are timeless and will always feel relevant
So fresh it's 23 years old
A very different interpretation: the song is about how your influence may impact someone.

This song will never sound old. It's perfect
Lyrics
(over the Tecates):
I watched you change
Into a fly
I looked away
You were on fire
I watched a change in you
It's like you never had wings
Now, you feel so alive
I've watched you change
I took you home
Set you on the glass
I pulled off your wings
Then I laughed
I watched a change in you
It's like you never had wings
Now, you feel so alive
I've watched you change
It's like you never had wings
Aah, aah, aah, aah
Aah, aah, aah, aah
Aah, aah
I look at the cross
Then I look away
Give you the gun
Blow me away
I watched a change in you
It's like you never had wings
Now, you feel so alive
I've watched you change
Now, you feel alive
You feel alive
You feel alive
I've watched you change
It's like you never had wings
Aah, aah, aah, aah
Aah, aah, aah, aah
Aah, aah
You've changed
You've changed
You've changed
I, I, I, I*

“Alright then, we’ll play by your rules Cooler. Let’s GOOOO!!!”
The scene where Goku turns super saiyan with the bird in his hand and this song… spiritual experience for 3rd grader me
I know people love the OG soundtracks to animes, but funimation really knocked it out of the park when they chose the music for the couple movies dbz had exclusive soundtacks.
Gives me chills every time
@@nikolaigednov this one and Panteras 10 when Broly transforms are just straight chills, so epic
Its crazy how when I'm feeling a certain way Deftones just does it for me consistently. Sad, sexy, brightness in a dark room.... so damn good.
a playlist with tool and deftones is like a high without the drug ,you can feel it anytime it's just better
That's my playlist lol
