I've been listening to jazz for more than 50 years. This is the most compelling version of this 1960's standard I've ever heard. Zoot's improvisations really capture the emotion of the tune perfectly. I own it on CD. It's a really nice release. And, Johnny Mandel was a very talented composer and arranger. His swing arrangements on the Sinatra album Ring A Ding Ding are fantastic. Getting back to the tenor sax, one of the most underrated players is Nino Tempo. He's in the same league, in my view, as Zoot Sims and Stan Getz.
Zoot Sims was a great tenor saxophone player, who produced the most beautiful sound from the instrument. He was a lyrical player, but could swing like crazy. If there is a heaven above I know Zoot is up their.
What a beautiful tune. I purchased this album when it came out in '84 and everyone who heard me play it loved the music and asked me about Zoot Sims. He made a lot of new fans with this gorgeous album. God Rest his Soul.
A gorgeous rendering of a gorgeous Johnny Mandel tune. Like many comments on this site Zoot and Stan Getz were my two favourite Tenor Sax players. Such a great shame they are no longer with us but what a superb legacy they left jazz lovers. RIP Stan and Zoot.
Zoot Sims I had the pleasure to listen together with Stan Getz in Rome in 65 was another of the great sax tenors that I have always said. Stan and Sims were my two great masters, technical enough with a voice to real tenors like I like it. Benny
Thanks Debb for the comment. Yes, he's extremely smooth. Listening to his albums, I always feel that he did not play, but he did sing using the instrument as his own vocal cords.
I'm an Eb guy; alto & bari. But if I were a tenor player, as much as I love Dexter Gordon, I'd rather sound like Zoot or Stan and I can't pick between those two.
My public opinion is the Zoot Sims is one really cool tenor sax man. He must be outstanding and one of the best.

I had a jazz radio show in Tampa years ago and interviewed Zoot in 1984. A great artist and a true gentleman.
What a sound this man come out of his horn. One of the best tenor and soprano saxmen ever.
What a beautiful lyrical rendition of the song, the best I have heard.

WHO is the anal aperture who downvotes this clip? Makes me SMH! It goes to prove there's always one Bozo in the crowd.

+Peter Smith --It doesn't getz any better than this... :)
You said it better than I could've said it. It's hard to accept they're both gone!

Dit is puur genieten.
Zoot "feels" every note....sublime ..no need to rate...relax & enjoy!
Oh here is Mike Wofford. Just discovered this pianist on a Bobby Shew concert You Tube rocks and Zoot too
3 yrs later too much old man vibrato. Piano introduction too mainstream not post Evans enough somehow also the whole vibe could be more Zen
one of my favorite song on a sax jazz evening with someone I simply love🤗🌹😙
Absolute cool. The epitome of smooth.
Saw him at Ronnie Scott's in the 60s with Al Cohn
Tellement lyrique....
Divine - Thank You Sadly I only heard him briefly - at the Nice Jazz Fest.
Just a real pure texture of sound
Lindo!!😮
Just beautiful!!!
Great Zoot Sims
As a sax player, I guess I can say that he's extremely smooth. This is such a pure melody and easy tempo. Lovely.
Thanks for posting this Zink.
Zoot never sold out to rock in the 70`s &80`s.
Una esperanza...sonidos de amor. bello!
That's a good piano player!

Zoot blows the most

They don't get any better than Zoot & Stan. I quit trying to rate one over the other....I just sit and enjoy now!
I have to add one more: Phil Woods
@@johnjazzmn1 Yes, and Al Cohn too. This is so good I think Al Cohn is digging it right now.

Soon we will look at tunes like this as would the Berliners to the comedian harmonists. What's left here? No jazz, no freedoms, no economy.
